"This volume is the result of an honest effort to describe, with such impartiality as I am capable of, the many and various legal methods of catching trout with rod and line in common usage to-day in the British Isles." Carter Platts further states that he has avoided "hysterical partisanship" and "I crave forgiveness of the fly fisher for having devoted so much space to bait fishing, while, with equal humility, I entreat the pardon of the bait fisher for allotting so many pages to fly fishing." Platt's recommended reading on the subject of entomology is W.G. Bainbridge's The Fly-fisher's Guide to Aquatic Flies. Some of the material in the text was first published in the Field and the Salmon and Trout Magazine, and no less than H.D. Turing and G.E.M. Skues helped prepare the manuscript. .

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Angling historians may study the evolution of tackle or tying techniques, or perhaps the methods of fishing used hundreds of years ago, but the wonderful old stories about fishing are read and reread only because they give pleasure today; because they give us insights into why we fish and the nature of our passion; and because they are well written. This book offers twenty of the best classic fishing stories that have stood the severe, inescapable test of time. John Buchan, Lewis Carroll, Rudyard Kipling, Washington Irving, Roland Pertwee, Andrew Lang, Henry Van Dyke, R. D. Blackmore, Anton Chekhov, John Taintor Foote, G. E. M. Skues, and all the others in this fine collection have given pleasure for generations.and will give great pleasure to modern anglers, too. Great and unforgettable stories about the passion of fishing by some of the greatest authors in history. Condition: new. Gathercole, Peter (illustrator). (Paperback, 1994). (1992) 1994 paperback edition. 8vo paperback. Ppxvi,194,ads. Colour plates of flies, photographs, illustrations, bibliography. Fine new copy. "Man has been fishing for trout and salmon with the fly since the time of the Ancient Greeks. Devising more ingenious methods of doing so, his rods, reels, lines and flies have evolved in fascinating ways. With a delightful blend of wit and erudition, Conrad Voss Bark tells the story of flyfishing, from the Macedonian 'plumes' of old to the hairwing streamers of today. He spotlights the sport's formative protagonists - Juliana Berners, Robert Venables, Isaak Walton, Charles Cotton, Alfred Ronalds, George Kelson, J.C. Mottram, Dr Bell, and many others, using his journalist's skills to appraise the prevailing dogmas, the breakthroughs in tackle and to re-live the great debates and controversies, including the famous Skues-Halford dispute. Throughout, flyfishing is seen against the broader canvas of the changing times in Britain, Ireland and North America. Today there are new forces which are shaping flyfishing history: water pollution, drift netting, over-kill, timeshare, catch-and-release and the explosion of new materials from which tackle and flies are made. Not since Waller-Hills' classic History of Fishing for Trout of 1921, has a broad survey of this fascinating sport been tackled with such individual style and verve." Chapters include:- The Macedonian method; Wyngis of the Pertryche; Cromwell's general; Cotton, Walton and Barker; The Ludlow doctor; Points of departure; The arrival of Ronalds; Butterflies for salmon; Springs and origins; The dry fly; Halford; Branche line; Reservoirs of poison; The nymph men; Bell's bugs; The legitimate method; The American influence; Return of the plume; A change of flies; The time of our lives. Appendices include:- The Roman plume; The Treatyse; The Venables text; Charles Cotton's flies; Scotcher of Chepstow; Alfred Ronalds; George Pulman and the dry fly; The upstream wet fly; Kelson's salmon flies; The dry and the floating fly; G.E.M. Skues; H.S. Hall and the dry fly; Dr. H. Bell. PREVIOUS PRICE GBP 12.95.

Reflections and reminiscences of flyfishing the Welsh Border streams. "Fishing books may teach or may beguile. This is not a teaching book and to say that it is a beguiling one would be to claim kinship with better men, for to beguile, so my dictionary tells me, is to divert attention from anything tedious or painful, and to do that a writer needs a goose quill or a nib of gold. We may assume that the first was used by the author of The Compleat Angler, and the second by the author of Where the Bright Waters Meet. I, alas, have had to make do with a ballpoint. However, if these reflections and recollections lighten an hour or two, that ubiquitous instrument will have served a not ignoble end." (taken from the author's foreword). Minor faults, inscription, good-plus in like dust-wrapper. This is an excellent collection of articles from the first 40 years of Trout & Salmon Magazine. Pieces are arranged into chapters thematically; in the beginning; why do we fish; light; the stillwater revolution; coping with disaster; courtesy; pioneers and disciples; the great lure debate; fly dressing - fact, fiction and fantasy; the great rainbow saga; sea trout and salmon; to put or to take; rods and lines. Contributors include many of the most well known angling writers of their day including, Dermot Wilson, Richard Walker, Alan Pearson, Hugh Falkus, John Goddard, Eric Horsfall Turner and others. Many less well known, but interesting, writers are included, as are a number of letters from readers. Donald Overfield contributes a series of articles on each of nine famous fly dressers - G.E.M. Skues, R.S. Austin, Theodore Gordon, Alfred Ronalds, Frederick Halford, Alex Mackintosh, Roger Woolley, J.W. Dunne, and William Lunn. Barry Lloyd contributes an article on Frank Sawyer, Moc Morgan gives an account of Oliver Kite and others on the Teifi, and C.R. Pearce discusses the folk tradition of fly tying. Well worth a read. "A work of art. Reading through it I could recall all the places and times where I had first read the articles in Trout and Salmon. And I enjoyed the experience just as much as when they were first published." (Rod & Gun). .

Chapters include:- Along the river bank; My first trout stream; Fooled by a caterpillar; The lie of the trout; In search of the black gnat; Rising the non-risers; Unhappy mixtures; Mercies large and small; Fast by a brook; Skues of the Itchen; The fly and the driver; Epicures in still waters; Persuasion with the wet fly; A movable feast; Teachers and preachers; Fred Shaw: Fisherman extraordinary; Greenheart and cane; Days of perch and dace; Game or gamin?; Izaak Walton re-visited; Bank clearing by numbers; Fringe benefits; The good-sized trout; I alway call him 'Sir'; In praise of river keepers. .
