About this Item: Self Published, New York, 1951. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Protected jacket has some edge wear, a sliver 1/8 inch high missing along the bottom of the spine, small pieces missing at the corners, the jacet is price clipped. The striking drawing by Charles White is very nicely preserved on the cover, some fading, but he title and author's name are distinct on the spine, and the full text of praise for the author by various critics is well-preserved on the back. The Covers, which are in very good shape, are black, indicating that this was part of a limited signed first edition priced at $5.00. Some fading to the gold lettering on the spine. The binding is straight, the pages clean and unmarked. The author has signed the book on the first inside page. Because of the blacklist, Fast self-published this book, which was later released by a commercial publisher. The book has been made into two memorable films. Very rare and collectible. About this Item: by the author (1951), NY, 1951. 8vo, pp. 363. Signed by the author on flyleaf. Bound in brick red cloth, VG tight copy in little worn dj. In his memoir, BEING RED (Houghton-Mifflin, 1990) Fast writes that he had ordered 5000 copies for the first printing which included the "autographed edition" with black cloth and five dollars printed on the flap. This was later made into a movie by Stanley Kubrick starring Kirk Douglas. Wikipedia: "Spartacus (c. 11171 BC) was a Thracian gladiator who, along with the Gauls Crixus, Oenomaus, Castus and Gannicus, was one of the escaped slave leaders in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Little is known about Spartacus beyond the events of the war, and surviving historical accounts are sometimes contradictory and may not always be reliable. However, all sources agree that he was a former gladiator and an accomplished military leader. First Edition, with the price of $5.00 on the dj flap. (later the price was reduced to $2.50). About this Item: H. Fast, New York, 1951. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 363 p. ; 21 cm. A first edition first printing. Accused of treason for not "naming names" before the House Un-American Activities Committee, Fast was sentenced to three months in prison. While there he began work on this novel, which he had to self-publish. Probably sold through leftist publications, this first edition, first printing is quite rare. (This copy purchased from the estate of a local communist). This copy is very good, except for a stain to the top of the spine. I have listed it without a dust jacket, but the ragged remains of a jacket are now protected in mylar. There is no spine to the jacket, but the line drawing of a bound Spartacus on the front cover is intact. Seller Inventory # 011177

From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition: Howard Fast, 1914-2003, American author, b. New York City. A prolific writer, he is best known for historical novels that mainly concern rebellion against various forms of tyranny. They include Citizen Tom Payne (1943), Freedom Road (1944), My Glorious Brothers (1948), Spartacus (1951), and April Morning (1961). Among his later novels is a lengthy multivolume, multigenerational family saga set in San Francisco: The Immigrants (1977), Second Generation (1978), The Establishment (1979), The Legacy (1981), The Immigrant's Daughter (1985), and An Independent Woman (1997). The Naked God (1957) is an account of Fast's political experiences, and the memoir Being Red (1990) further explores the issues involved.
