About this Item: Wipf & Stock Publishers, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. This companion reader to Chase and Phillips, A New Introduction to Greek, (Harvard University Press: Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1961) is a compilation of slightly edited "real Greek" from Plato, Xenophon, Plutarch, Diogenes Laertius, and the Septuagint. The reader has a preface introducing the student to the Greek authors. The lessons reinforce grammar and vocabulary in this classic introductory textbook. Students meet Socrates, Plato, Cyrus, Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, his horse Bucephalus, and more. They read about events surrounding Socrates' trial and execution, Plato's analogy of the cave, Caesar's capture by pirates, the first chapter of Genesis, and a famous Psalm. In short, students are exposed to some of the classics of Western Civilization in this short reader, which seeks to complement the proven Chase and Phillips. "Schmisek has designed a delightful and extraordinarily helpful text that breathes new life into an old classic. His readings admirably and elegantly illustrate grammatical points in the context of carefully selected passages, while engaging the student with both iconic and charmingly idiosyncratic vignettes of Socrates, Plato, Alexander, Caesar, and others." --Frank Russell, Professor of Classics and History, Transylvania University Brian Schmisek is Associate Professor and Director of the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University Chicago. The English Language: A Historical Introduction covers the history of the English language from its remote Indo-European origins to the present day. About this Item: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2010. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Thomas K. Arnold's Practical Introduction to Latin Prose Composition was first published in 1839, and was later edited and revised by George Granville Bradley (1821-1903) of University College, Oxford. This graduated and systematic approach to elements of Latin grammar and syntax has been the reference of choice for both teachers and students ever since, and has been revised, updated and redesigned several times. The book reissued here is a companion volume, first published by Bradley in 1881, which contains answers to all the exercises in Arnold's classic textbook. Long out of print, the Key provides model Latin solutions to all the exercises, as well as pedagogical footnotes and cross-references. A valuable resource for all instructors who use Bradley's Arnold, it will also be helpful to students wishing to write more accurately in Latin. Seller Inventory # AAV9781108012355

About this Item: Wipf & Stock Publishers, United States, 2016. Hardback. About this Item: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2010. Paperback. Condition: New. Reissue, Bilingual. Language: English. Brand new Book. Thomas Kerchever Arnold's Practical Introduction to Greek Prose Composition first appeared in 1838 and was reprinted in several editions due to popular demand, being adopted as a textbook in leading public schools. Ordained as a priest in 1827 after graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1821, Arnold had studied both theology and classics, and wrote prolifically on both subjects. His first school textbook was published in 1836 and others followed steadily until his death in 1853. One of the chief merits of Arnold's classical publications was his use of contemporary works of German scholarship, to which he readily acknowledged his debt. He produced, alongside Latin and Greek textbooks, grammars of English, French, German, Italian, and Hebrew, and editions of many Greek and Latin authors. This introduction was designed to provide students with the basic tools with which to construct sentences and includes exercises on syntax and a vocabulary index. Seller Inventory # AAV9781108011426

About this Item: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2010. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Henry John Roby (1830-1915) was a Cambridge-educated classicist whose influential career included periods as a schoolmaster, professor of Roman law, businessman, educational reformer and Member of Parliament. Elementary Latin Grammar (1862) is a complete, concise introduction to the Latin language. Written for classroom use, it presents essential grammatical constructions in the clearest possible manner, using ample material from the classical authors as demonstrations of basic principles. The book guides the reader through noun and adjective declensions and the full array of verb conjugations before turning to prosody and syntax, where Roby's innovations in Latin instruction are most evident. Simple, direct, and based upon examples including texts by Livy and Cicero, the book shows students how to parse basic sentences while also introducing them to more subtle and complex constructions. It remains a useful resource for teachers of Latin, and a fascinating document in the history of education. Seller Inventory # AAV9781108011211
