About this Item: Dokument Forlag, Sweden, 2009. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Tags are designed street names, written in the public domain. They are one of the most despised phenomena since long hair on men. They have burrowed their way into the big cities of the world, working both to annoy and tell stories. Now, they tell the tale of how the biggest and most vital artistic trend of the late 20th century originated among children and youths. Martha Cooper documented New York subway paintings in the book Subway Art (1984). But she most preferred tags, the bastard siblings of the pieces, because of their raw energy. Tags are the blue print and uncouth offspring of graffiti writing culture. Cooper went exploring, and found a gold mine just a few blocks from her home! The earliest tags in New York were developed in Washington Heights, North Manhattan, and ten years later, Martha was there with her camera. She documented backyards, bridge supports, parks and pedestrian tunnels with the precision of an ethnographer. The walls were still full of tags from the 60s and 70s, a forgotten gallery. The pictures have lain in Martha's photo archive since then. Featuring interviews with oldschool writers Part 1 and Snake 1, pioneers of the early 70s New York writing scene, and essays on tags and calligraphy, Tag Town is the first book to show early tags in their context. Even in the early 70s, all the basic forms that still appear in modern graffiti writers' work, were there. Tag Town is a lesson in reading tags for beginners, and an eureka moment for the experienced writer. Martha Cooper has documented hip-hop culture since 1980. She is the author of books such as Subway Art, Hip Hop Files, We B Girlz and Street Play. Seller Inventory # AAC9789185639052

About this Item: Thames & Hudson Ltd, United Kingdom, London, 1994. Paperback. Condition: Fair. Once, the spraycan "kings" of New York's subways astounded the world with their exuberant graffiti images. Now a new generation of artists has hit the streets and is decorating neighbourhood walls with memorials to the tragic and untimely deaths of friends and loved ones. "R.I.P." - assembling the very best of a vibrant street art wave - contains colour photographs of memorials from Harlem and the Lower East Side, the South Bronx and Brooklyn, as well as the moving stories behind them. The victims of shootings, accidents, arguments, police killings and drug-related turf wars may be gone, but thanks to these paintings they are not forgotten: for a violent and indifferent city has also spawned a rich urban art form. Martha Cooper's first book of photographs was "Subway Art" (with Henry Chalfant, Thames and Hudson, 1984). A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration. Seller Inventory # GOR001586015

About this Item: Booksllc.Net, United States, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 27. Chapters: 34th Street Wall, 5 Pointz, Arborglyph, Billboard Liberation Front, Bomb the System, Borf, Concrete Immortalz, Dirty Hands: The Art and Crimes of David Choe, EyeWriter, Freedom Tunnel, Graffiti Blasters, Graffiti Research Lab, Krog Street Tunnel, Martha Cooper, Mission School, Petroleum hydroxide, Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network, Piece by Piece (film), Pink Lady (art), Red goats of Kingston, SAMO, Street art in Atlanta, Style Wars, Subway Art, Videograf Productions, Zoo York, Zoo York Wall. Excerpt: Graffiti in the United States, is writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Graffiti, consisting of the defacement of public spaces and buildings, remains a nuisance issue for cities. It also has had an international influence especially from the examples in the New York City Subway and the Chicana/Chicano experience. An aerosol paint can, common tool for modern graffitiIn America around the late 1960s, graffiti was used as a form of expression by political activists, and also by gangs such as the Savage Skulls, La Familia, and Savage Nomads to mark territory. Towards the end of the 1960s, the signatures-tags-of Philadelphia graffiti writers Cornbread, Cool Earl and Topcat 126 started to appear. Cornbread is often cited as one of the earliest writer of modern graffiti. Around 1970-71, the centre of graffiti innovation moved to New York City where writers following in the wake of TAKI 183, Tracy 168 and Phase 2 would add their street number to their nickname, "bomb" a train with their work, and let the subway take it-and their fame, if it was impressive, or simply pervasive, enough-"all city." Bubble lettering held sway initially among writers from the Bronx, though the elaborate writing Tracy 168 dubbed "wildstyle" would come to define the art. The early trendsetters were joined in the 70s by artists like Dondi, Zephyr and Lady Pink. Graffiti is one of the four main elements of hip hop culture (along with rapping, DJing, and break dancing). The relationship between graffiti and hip hop culture arises both from early graffiti artists practicing other aspects of hip hop, and its being practiced in areas where other elements of hip hop were evolving as art forms. By the mid-eighties, the form would move from the street to the art world. Jean-Michel Basquiat would abandon his SAMO tag for art galleries, and street art's connections to. About this Item: Damiani March 2007, 2007. Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. In Heavy Metal, the Italian photographer Alex Fakso brings us behind the scenes of the secretive and low-down-glamorous world of European graffiti art, documenting the daily (and nightly) lives of that continent's most celebrated street artists--spraycans in hand. Fakso was allowed unprecedented access to this normally guarded underground culture, from Milan, to London, Berlin, Barcelona and beyond, allowing him to produce an electrifying body of work that conveys, on every page, the sense of an urgent covert mission. Fakso produced these photographs during the twilight hours, documenting each artist's unique tactics, movements and sense of personal determination: each photograph conveys the compelling sense of risk and adventure with which the artist approaches his work, whether entering into a shadowy train yard or negotiating a high fence to do so. In keeping with the tradition of the great urban documentarians Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant and Bruce Davidson, who recorded New York's subway graffiti in the 1970s and 1980s, Fakso puts European graffiti, and its practitioners, on the map. This exhilarating, long-overdue collection represents the new generation of emerging European street artists, and is an essential record of European urban culture in our time. Foreword by Alex Fakso. Introduction by Giovanna Calvenzi. Text by Jamel Shabazz. Seller Inventory # 20110228135707

About this Item: Fondation Cartier, Paris France 2009, 2009. Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. This Heavy book Will Require Extra Postage For Overseas Thank You Published to accompany the exhibition Graffiti, this book re-examines the birth and evolution of the graffiti movement in early 1970s NewYork, as well as its appearance in Paris, a city which became the nerve centre for graffiti in Europe in the 1980s. A great many photos by such leading historians of the street art movement as Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant and John Naar, as well as press articles and piecebooks, document graffitis beginnings at the moment when pioneers like Lee, Seen and Lady Pink were tagging NewYork City subways and challenging city authorities. In order to account properly for the global scale of the movement and its continued vitality, Graffiti juxtaposes the different aesthetics of big cities like NewYork, Paris, Berlin, as well as São Paulo, comparing each citys style as well as the diverse practices of contemporary graffiti artists. This catalogue also features several interviews with artists who influenced the movement and of other people involved in its development, such as gallery owners. These texts shed new light both onto this artistic movement and onto the major stages of its evolution, while also reinserting graffiti within the context of urban street culture (hip-hop, break dancing, skating) of which it has always been part . 240 pages. In Stock.
