About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Samuel Rutherford Crockett (24 September 1859 - 16 April 1914), who published under the name "S. R. Crockett," was a Scottish novelist. He was born at Duchrae, Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire, on 24 September 1859, the illegitimate son of dairymaid Annie Crocket. He was raised on his grandfather's Galloway farm, won a bursary to Edinburgh University in 1876, and graduated from there during 1879.After some years of travel, he became in 1886 minister of Penicuik. During that year he produced his first publication, Dulce Cor (Latin: Sweet Heart), a collection of verse under the pseudonym Ford Brereton. He eventually abandoned the Free Church ministry for full-time novel-writing in 1895.The success of J. M. Barrie and the Kailyard school of sentimental, homey writing had already created a demand for stories in Lowland Scots, when Crockett published his successful story of The Stickit Minister in 1893.It was followed by a rapidly produced series of popular novels frequently featuring the history of Scotland or his native Galloway. Crockett made considerable sums of money from his writing and was a friend and correspondent of R. L. Stevenson, but his later work has been criticised as being over-prolific and feebly sentimental.Crockett's connection with Kailyard is now beginning to be acknowledged as nebulous at best, as evidenced by a re-appraisal of the whole Kailyard concept by writers such as Andrew Nash.In 1900, Crockett wrote a booklet published by the London camera manufacturer, Newman & Guardia, comparing cameras favourably to pen and pencil and explaining how he encountered the N and G advertisement.Crockett was well travelled in Europe and beyond, spending time in most European countries and he wrote several novels of European history including The Red Axe (1898), A Tatter of Scarlet (1913), and the non fiction The Adventurer in Spain (1903) which holds its own against Robert Louis Stevenson's travel writing. He died in France on 16 April 1914. The subsequent outbreak of the First World War meant a delay in his remains being buried in his home kirkyard at Balmaghie. A memorial to him was erected in Laurieston by public subscription in 1932. Gordon Frederick Browne (15 April 1858 - 27 May 1932) was an English artist and children's book illustrator in the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was born in Banstead, the younger son of notable book illustrator Hablot Knight Browne (who as "Phiz" illustrated books by Charles Dickens). He studied art at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and South Kensington Schools and started to receive professional commissions while still at college. William Henry Charles Groome (1854-1913). About this Item: Goodspeed Publishing Co., Chicago Illinois, 1887. Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. Where President Andrew Johnson kept the folks in stitches. Greene County, Tennessee! Early days in Greene County, TN, are recalled in this spiral bound booklet composed of colorful tales, factual data and individual biographies excerpted from several sources, including the rare book: History of Tennessee, originally published by Goodspeed Publishing Co. in 1887. The 41-page booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. Despite its overly long paragraphs and lack of good illustrations, the booklet provides a wealth of information. The first paragraph alone, for instance, describes the terrain, tells of the first settler, the first white child born, names of many other early settlers, and discusses early churches. The following pages cover attitutes toward slavery, a convention of the Friends Church with names of delegates, the first Methodist Society in the state, County organization and early magistrates, the first grand jury, the State of Franklin, the circuit court, the chancery court, members of the legal profession, Thomas D. Arnold, the City of Greeneville, merchants, education, Tusculum Academy, newspapers, and the names of many county officials including some as far back as 1783. This biography section of this booklet is a goldmine of information for genealogy seekers, usually giving the names of parents, spouse, in-laws, children, siblings, etc., as well as military service, politics, residence and occupation, in the course of which it often adds tidbits to the history of the area: J.C. Ayers, Marion L. Bailey, Dr. G.N. Bailey, George A. Bailey, Christian Bible, Capt. John C. Bible, Capt. Thomas Bible, W.C. Black, Dr. John R. Boyd, James H. Bright, Col. A.J. Brown, James L. Leming, James Love, James Luster, J.B.R. Lyon, James B. Lyon, Hugh D. Maloney, Henry G. Marsh, Joseph W. McDannel, J.W. McDannald, D.W. Mercer, William E.F. Milburn, Rev. Jere Moore, J.S. Tipton, Col. J.G. Weems, G.J. Weems, Joseph A. Williams, Thomas L. Williams and William Houston Williams. The final part of the booklet contains brief excerpts from Counties of Tennessee by Austin P. Foster, Tennessee, a Guide to the State, compiled and written by the Federal Writer's Project of the WPA in 1939, and a brief article on the State of Franklin from an old encyclopedia. The WPA book tells of President Andrew Johnson's tailoring days. Seller Inventory # 000480

About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Samuel Rutherford Crockett (24 September 1859 - 16 April 1914), who published under the name "S. R. Crockett", was a Scottish novelist. About this Item: The Arkansaw Traveler Publishing Co., Chicago Illinois, 1889. Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. Life in early Clark County, Kentucky, is recalled in this new 53 page booklet titled: Clark County, Kentucky, USA. The spiral-bound booklet is a compilation of excerpts from several hard to find sources: the 1877 Atlas of Burbon, Clark, Fayette, Jessamine and Woodford Counties, KY (maps only); the Handbook of Clark County and the City of Winchester (1889); and Kentucky, a Guide to the Bluegrass State, a 1939 product of the WPA Writer's Program. The tri-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed on 8.5" x 11" 60# paper. Although the writer of the handbook states that it is not "designed to be a biographical dictionary", there are nonetheless a number of prominent citizens mentioned, sometimes with photographs of themselves and /or their homes. The writer further states that "the keynote of the book is to present Wincheste and Clark county as they are," so the booklet is not primarily a history and yet by its nature it is historical material today. Among the many subjects included are: a 1793 description of the area; Geology of the area; Agricultural Resources and Cattle Raising; Population; the City of Winchester, county seat; public schools of Winchester, and its various improvements and businesses; the Winchester Bar; County officials and city government;, and other interesting bits of history and trivia. Pictures include the homes of John W. Bean, F. H. Dudley, Dr. Washington Miller, H.P. Thomson, V.H. Abbott, J.H. Besuden (spelled Bisuden in the WPA book), Judge W. M. Beckner, V.W. Bush, Washington Miller, Dr. J.D. Simpson, M. R. Browne; Rodney Haggard, N.H. Witherspoon, William M. Cooke, A. Mitchell Jr., I.N. Massie, S.H. Oden, B.F. Curtis, E.C. Fox, R.R. Perry, W.B. Gardiner. There are also pictures of the Winchester Opera House, business of Jacob Saarbach, M.H. Clay & Co.'s Planing Mills, Winchester Fire Department, Perry & Whittington Dealers in Coal, Business of Evans, Gordon & Co., Kentucky Wesleyan College, Citizen's National Bank in Winchester, Dudley Furtnature Co., Rees House, Methodist Church, Eclipse Mills and business block of Smith P. Kerr, Baptist Church, T.L. Phillips' Drug Store Interior; Presbyterian Church, Court House, Jones Bros. Warehouse; V.W. Bush's Warehouse; W.B. Logan's Drug Store Interior; and Conn Bros. Planning mills. This booklet includes 7 pages of excerpts from the WPA book. Although perhaps out of date as a tour book, these WPA guides are rich in history and trivia. A story of Daniel Boone and Boonesboro, on the county's border, is included. Seller Inventory # 000552
