Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) was a Genevan philosopher, writer and composer. His political philosophy influenced the progress of the Age of Enlightenment throughout Europe, as well as aspects of the French Revolution and he development of modern political, economic, and educational thought. The Confessions is an autobiographical book covering the first fifty-three years of the author's life, up to 1765. It was completed in 1769, but not published until 1782, four years after Rousseau's death, even though Rousseau did read excerpts of his manuscript publicly at various salons and other meeting places. The Confessions was two distinct works, each consisting of six books. Books I to VI were written between 1765 and 1767 and published in 1782 (this edition). Thought the book contains factual inaccuracies - in particular, Rousseau's dates are frequently off, some events are out of order, and others are misinterpreted, incomplete, or incorrect - Rousseau provides an account of the experiences that shaped his personalities and ideas. Rousseau's work is notable as one of the first major autobiographies. Prior to the Confessions, the two great autobiographies were Augustine's own Confessions and Saint Teresa's Life of Herself. However, both of these works focused on the religious experience of their authors; the Confessions was one fo the first autobiographies in which an individual wrote of his life mainly in terms of his worldly experiences and personal feelings. Found in Vol. II is also The Reveries of the Solitary Walker, an unfinished book by Rousseau, written between 1776 and 1778. The content in the book is a mix of autobiographical anecdote, descriptions of the sights, especially plants, that Rousseau saw in his walks on the outskirts of Paris, and elaborations and extensions of arguments previous made by Rousseau in fields like education and political philosophy. A true first edition, complete in two volumes Books I-VI, plus Solitary Walker. Modern binding makes these excellent gifts or additions to any library.

First Edition
First edition in English of the first six books of the Confessions and of the Reveries; both were first published in French in Geneva the previous year. Rousseau's Confessions is one of the most influential autobiographies in the history of European literature, which virtually created the genre as we know it today. Modelled on the work of the same title by St. Augustine, it recounts his story "with vivid minuteness, setting forth all the incidents of an agitated life, his reaction to them, and his spiritual development while concealing nothing to his discredit, even the meanest actions and sexual abnormalities" (Oxford Companion to English Literature, p. 160). The Reveries of a Solitary Walker is Rousseau's last work, left unfinished, a collection of the author's reflections occasioned by a series of walks around Paris during the final years of his life. A further six books of the Confessions were published in French in 1789 and in English in 1790. Provenance: with ownership signature to the title page of vol. I of "Mary Bishopp 1795", and her bookplate with handwritten monogram "MB" to both title page versos; bookplate to the front pastedowns of the leading British book collector Eric Quayle, and his note on the first bookplate: "This is the first English edition and is very rare E.Q.". Quayle published large-format and well-illustrated guides to book collecting, based on his own collection, which still act as signposts for new collectors, and important references for the experienced. ESTC T136470. P. Harvey & J. E. Heseltine, The Oxford Companion to English Literature, 1959. 2 volumes, duodecimo (171 x 99 mm). Twentieth-century panelled calf to style, red morocco labels. Very light sunning to spines, title pages a little toned else contents clean. A very good copy.

Rousseau presents in his Confessions (book X) that when La Nouvelle Héloïse was printed in Holland (at Marc-Michel Reys's), M. de Malesherbes, censor of the library of France, only allowed the broadcast of the Dutch edition in the kingdom after the exhaustion of an edition he had ordered in Paris (by the bookseller Robin), in favour of the author, "despite myself", says Rousseau. [?] While the Recueil des Planches has been for sale in Paris, at the beginning of March 1761, the six volumes of La Nouvelle Héloïse (Ed. Robin) have been in February.
