About this Item: A. L. Burt N.D., New York. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Very Good 100% clean; COMPLETE in 1 volume, excellent binding, deckled slate boards. No wrapper. Ex-lib labels on pastedown not marked-in, underscored, clearance or discard. Mails from NYC usually within 12 hours. ; 681 pages; Probably Carlyle's most brilliant work, THE FRENCH REVOLUTION is not so much a history as a succession of pictures, or poems in prose, featuring an abundance of demons to hate and a few heroes to admire. Charles Kendall Adams, the author of A MANUAL OF HISTORICAL LITERATURE (1888) , states that Every student of the Revolutionary period should read the book and calls it probably the most remarkable work ever written on the Revolution, though he suggests that it be read in conjunction with a work of more commonplace merits. About this Item: ND. No binding. Cut signature of Thomas Carlyle on a 1-3/4 x 1/2 inch paper. Thomas Carlyle was a British historian, satirical writer, essayist, translator, philosopher, mathematician, and teacher. In his book On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History (1841), he argued that the actions of the "Great Man" play a key role in history, claiming that "the history of the world is but the biography of great men". Other major works include The French Revolution: A History, 3 vols (1837) and The History of Friedrich II of Prussia, Called Frederick the Great, 6 vols (1858-65). Thomas Carlyle is notable both for his continuation of older traditions of the Tory satirists of the 18th century in England and for forging a new tradition of Victorian era criticism of progress known as sage writing.
