He is a superior cultural historian whose widely acclaimed memoirs are considerably more than a record of an extraordinary life. In this, the latest volume of his memoirs, Mr. Ehrenburg blends the great events of the period 1945 to 1954, the attitudes of individuals and nations, and his own work and thoughts to bring into sharp focus the critical post~war years. Recreating the "Madness of 1950," the height of the cold war hysteria, he recounts the press reports of Western countries he visited that attacked him as a dangerous subversive and spy. Revealing the horrors of the Stalin and Beria purges, Mr. Ehrenburg tells of the great Russian artists, his friends, who slept with pistols to make the end quicker when they heard footsteps at night on the stairs. His description of the death of Mikhoels, a Jewish~Russian actor, at the hands of Beria's men is as frightening as it is tragic. In showing the achievements and needs of the Russian people, of whom he is fiercely proud, the author presents an in~depth analysis of the role of Stalin and the attitude of the people toward him, and concludes this volume with a description of the freedom from fear following Beria's arrest and the resulting thaw in the political attitudes between the Soviet Union and the West. Ilya Ehrenburg was born in Kiev in 1891. The son of a wealthy Jewish family, Mr. Ehrenburg became a revolutionary in 1908 in reaction to czarist oppression, was imprisoned, and then was forced into exile in Paris at the age of 17. His wide~ranging travels began then, and since that time his life has alternated between periods spent in Europe (he has also visited the United States) and returns to Russia, where he has been both observer and participant in the major political events since the Revolution. One of the best known contemporary Soviet writers, Ilya Ehrenburg is the author of many novels and outstanding works of reportage. His books include Change of Season, Chekhou, Memoirs: 1921~1941, and The War: 1941~1945. Seller Inventory # 5241107

About this Item: University Press of the Pacific, United States, 2003. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Ilya Ehrenburg was born in 1891 into the family of a Moscow manufacturer. At the age of fifteen he joined the revolutionary movement. He was expelled from the gymnasium for distributing Bolshevik leaflets, was arrested and served more than a year in prison. From 1909 to 1917 he was a resident of Paris and did much traveling throughout Europe. It was at this time that he took to writing poetry, which he printed in Russia and other countries. In 1917 he returned to his native country. In 1921 he again left for France, and lived in Paris, making frequent trips to the Soviet Union. Ehrenburg's writings show great diversity of theme and genre. Whether the work at hand was a purely literary article or a novel of fantastic cast, a story of adventure or a delicately penned novelette, a book of verse or a political pamphlet, whether he was dispensing humor or the comments of a journalist, he wielded pen with equal mastery and brilliance. The Storm was the Stalin Prize Novel for 1947. Seller Inventory # AAV9781410205858

About this Item: London, Lawrence and Wishart., 1955. First English language Edition. 13.5 x 20 cm. 895 pages. Original cloth hardcover with gilt lettering on spine. Good condition with some stronger signs of external wear. [Library of contemporary Soviet Novels]. 'The Ninth Wave' is a novel complete in itself but at the same time it is a sequel to Ehrenburg's war novel, 'The Storm', whose principal characters it shows facing up to the problems of the post-war world. Their experience and behaviour during the war years, as told in 'The Storm', do much to determine their reactions to the cold war, which form the main subject of 'The Ninthe Wave'. The connection of the two novels is reflected in the title, the explanation of which is to be found in the words of one of the characters (Professor Dumas), who says: 'The outraged conscience of humanity reminds one of a huge wave, such as history has perhaps never witnessed . according, to a popular Russian belief, the ninth wave is the largest of all .'.
