About this Item: Harper Perennial, 1991. paperback. Condition: Very Good In Wrappers. New York. 1991. Harper Perennial. Reprinted Paperback Edition. Very Good In Wrappers. ISBN: 0060919639. Translated from the Spanish by Gregory Rabassa. 269 pages. paperback. Cover illustration by Cathleen Toelke. FROM THE PUBLISHER - A dictator’s body is discovered in his Enormous, crumbling palace. Revolutionaries burst in and find his rotting corpse in an anarchic tangle of past and present - a present already lost and decayed, a past of almost unimaginable richness in which the palace was crowded with the dictator’s ministers, bodyguards and servants, who kept him precariously balanced in power, and also with a tribe of women and children. The atmosphere is dreamlike - even nightmarish - real, vibrant and sensually exact, and at the same time vague and almost unbelievable. From this very definite beginning the novel moves round and round in time - backward, forward and sideways in a narrative of reminiscence. The action takes place in a Latin American country in an advanced state of corruption, anarchy, savagery, and physical exuberance. The time is the modern period, though not specified. An air force is mentioned; a League of Nations exists somewhere; American ambassadors with names like Wilson move in and out and occasionally the Pope sends messages. Dominating the action is the dictator-general, at first an almost messianic presence loved by the people, appearing suddenly among the peasants like a vision, walking alone or with a few colleagues, but as a rule going unguarded and unafraid. Then, as his rule tightens, as things become harsher, be becomes more suspicious and frightened and goes out only in a closely guarded car and with a bodyguard; or else he appears on a balcony, a distant, scarcely human figure. The discovery of a man who is his double makes appearances much easier for him; the double is dressed as people expect the leader to dress, and is sent to appear where the leader is expected. When there is an assassination, it is the double, not the leader, who is killed. This is an extraordinary novel by one of the world’s leading writers. Rich, vivid and brilliantly original, THE AUTUMN OF THE PATRIARCH is a masterful work of imagination, narrative and description superbly translated by Gregory Rabassa. inventory #35352. About this Item: Pinata Books, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Bilingual. Language: English,Spanish . Brand New Book. During the school day, Lance García looks like a typical fourth-grader at Oakland Elementary School. But after school, dressed in disguise—black jacket, black baseball cap and dark, cool sunglasses with tiny, rectangular mirrors so he can see who’s behind him—he checks the mailbox labeled "Malo Mail." No one realizes that he is the infamous Mister Malo, righter of wrongs, punisher of bullies. There’s an interesting plea for help in the mailbox. Isabella Santos spread a rumor that Madeline Wilson farted on the playground, and now everyone makes farting noises when she walks by. No one will talk to her, and a group of boys in particular are making her life miserable. Madeline offers Mister Malo a large box of tropical-flavored fruit snacks if he’ll teach Isabella a lesson. Soon Lance is busy plotting the perfect revenge. He wants to rehabilitate the bullies and help them realize how hurtful their actions are. What will be the best tactic to convince Isabella that being laughed at and picked on is no fun? But Mister Malo’s scheme doesn’t go exactly as planned, forcing him to think outside of the box. Meanwhile, Lance has to deal with his own problem in the form of his difficult cousin, Manuel. This entertaining bilingual "flip" book will resonate with kids ages 8-12 in its examination of popularity on the school grounds and dealing with troublemakers. Seller Inventory # AAC9781558858534

About this Item: City Lights Books, United States, 2001. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: Spanish . Brand New Book. These poems, from the astonishing 10th- through 13th-century civilization in Andalusia, are based on the codex of Ibn Sa id, who wanted poems whose idea is more subtle than the West Wind, and whose language is more beautiful than a fair face. Spanish readers have long been enchanted by their enduring appeal through the versions by Emilio Garcia Gomez. This poetry of Arab Andalusia made a profound impact on Spain s Generation of 27. Rafael Alberti says that it was a revelation for me and had a great influence on my work, but above all influenced the work of Federico Garcia Lorca. Cola Franzen s vibrant, delicious and faithful renderings of this poetic motherlode are, to quote from a poet in her marvelous compilation, shooting stars that leap agile as acrobats. -Christopher Sawyer-Laucanno, author of An Invisible Spectator: A Biography of Paul Bowles Of those things which delight the senses (according to a Tradition of the Prophet) the chiefest are water, green things a beautiful face ; therefore a poetry of noble exquisiteness limits itself to certain tropes, in which the wisdom of sensuality is endlessly rediscovered. Blow dust from the folios of the vanished Moors be stabbed by the URGENT NECESSITY of light-dappled fountains, the fractals of the garden, the transmutations of desire. -Peter Lamborn Wilson, author of Ploughing the Clouds Cola Franzen has translated from Spanish some twenty volumes of prose and poetry, including Claudia Guillen s The Challenge of Comparative Literature, and Dreams of the Abandoned Seducer by Alicia Borinsky.
