Item Description: Atlantic Books, London, 2004. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. In America a small group of thinkers, known as 'neoconservatives' stands accused of hijacking the nation's foreign policy, converting it from a multilateralist nation that relies on persuasion into a unilateralist country relying exclusively on military power to achieve its aim of installing pro-American, democratic regimes in the Middle East and, eventually, in Africa and other unstable regions of the world. Their critics call the neo-cons 'democratic imperialists' in pursuit of unachievable goals. This book contains classic and original neoconservative writing to provide the first collection for British readers of ideas that are exerting enormous influence on American foreign and defence policy and have caused such a violent reaction among those who disagree. It contains freshly commissioned pieces by: defense Tony Blair; Robert Kagan; Condoleezza Rice; George Will; Jeane Kirkpatrick; Adam Wolfson; Irving Kristol; William Kristol; Margaret Thatcher; David Brooks; Max Boot; George L. Kelling; Kenneth Weinstein; Joao Carlos Espada; James Q. Wilson; Karlyn Bowman and Michael Gove. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 153212

Item Description: Duke University Press, United States, 2010. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 226 x 155 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. Scientists, activists, state officials, NGOs and others increasingly claim to speak and act on behalf of humanity. The remarkable array of circumstances in which humanity is invoked testifies to the category s universal purchase. Yet what exactly does it mean to govern, fight, and care in the name of humanity? In this timely collection, leading anthropological and cultural critics grapple with that question, examining configurations of humanity in relation to biotechnologies, the natural environment, and humanitarianism and human rights. From the global pharmaceutical industry to forest conservation to International Criminal Tribunals, the domains they analyze highlight the diversity of spaces and scales at which humanity is articulated. The editors argue that ideas about humanity find concrete expression in the governing work that operationalizes those ideas to produce order, prosperity, and security. As a site of governance, humanity appears as both an object of care and a source of anxiety. Assertions that humanity is being threatened, whether by environmental catastrophe or political upheaval, provide a justification for the elaboration of new governing techniques. At the same time, humanity itself is identified as a threat (to nature, to nation, to global peace) which governance must contain. These apparently contradictory understandings of the relation of the threat to the category of humanity coexist and remain in tension, helping to maintain the dynamic co-production of governance and humanity. Contributors: Arun Agrawal; Joao Biehl; Didier Fassin; Allen Feldman; Ilana Feldman; Rebecca Hardin; S. Lochann Jain; Liisa Malkki; Adriana Petryna; Miriam Ticktin; Richard Ashby Wilson; Charles Zerner. Bookseller Inventory # AAJ9780822348214

Item Description: Atlantic Books, London, 2004. Hardcover with dust jacket. Book Condition: BRAND NEW. A landmark collection of writings by some of the most admired, influential and reviled political thinkers in the world. In the United States a small group, known as neoconservatives, stand accused of hijacking the nation's foreign policy. According to their critics, the 'neocons' have converted America from a multilateralist nation that relies on persuasion into a unilateralist country that relies exclusively on military power to achieve its aim of installing pro-American, democratic regimes in the Middle East and other unstable regions of the world. Their critics call the neocons 'democratic imperialists' in pursuit of unachievable goals. This book brings together the key ideas that underpin 'neoconservative' thought. With contributions from Tony Blair, Michael Gove, Robert Kagan, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Irving Kristol, William Kristol, Condoleezza Rice, Irwin Stelzer; Margaret Thatcher; Adam Wolfson; and James Q. Wilson, (among many others), it is an indispensable volume for understanding the times in which we live. Item Description: Berghahn Books, United Kingdom, 2010. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 232 x 154 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. The past half-century has produced a mass of information regarding slave resistance, ranging from individual acts of disobedience to massive uprisings. Many of these acts of rebellion have been studied extensively, yet the ultimate goals of the insurgents remain open for discussion. Recently, several historians have suggested that slaves achieved their own freedom by resisting slavery, which counters the predominant argument that abolitionist pressure groups, parliamentarians, and the governmental and anti-governmental armies of the various slaveholding empires were the prime movers behind emancipation. Marques, one of the leading historians of slavery and abolition, argues that, in most cases, it is impossible to establish a direct relation between slaves uprisings and the emancipation laws that would be approved in the western countries. Following this presentation, his arguments are taken up by a dozen of the most outstanding historians in this field. In a concluding chapter, Marques responds briefly to their comments and evaluates the degree to which they challenge or enhance his view. Seymour Drescher is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He served as the first Secretary for the European Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C. (1984-85). Known for his studies on Alexis de Tocqueville and the history of slavery, his book, The Mighty Experiment (2002), was awarded the Frederick Douglass Prize. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1892 Excerpt: . . . CHAPTER VIII The Successors Of Albuquerque (continued) Dom Constantino de Braganza and Bom Luis de Atkaide The thirty-five years which followed from the death of Dom Joao de Castro to the extinction of the independence of Portugal are neither so interesting nor so important as those which saw the building up of the Portuguese power in the East. Commercially, the value of Vasco da Gamas voyage and of Albuquerques victories became greater than ever. The largest fleets of merchant-ships ever sent to Portugal were despatched after Philip II of Spain had become also Philip I of Portugal. The Portuguese monopoly remained unbroken until 1595, and the nations of Europe, while they grew in civilisation and in love of luxury, continued until that time to buy from Lisbon the Asiatic commodities which had become necessary to them. As the commerce became systematised it grew larger and more profitable, both to the Royal Treasury which equipped the merchant fleets and sold their cargoes at Lisbon, and to the individual agents in India, who purchased the goods which made up these cargoes. But politically the history of the Portuguese in India becomes less interesting. There were no more great discoveries; no more great conquests and great victories; no more grandiose conceptions of expelling the Muhammadans from the markets of Asia. Gallant feats of arms were still accomplished, but they only proved how the Portuguese had degenerated since the days of Albuquerque. The defence of Goa by Dom Luis de Athaide was brilliant, but after all it was a defensive operation, and not a victory such as Dom Joao de Castro had won at Diu, or the storming of a strong city, like the captures of Goa and Malacca by Albuquerque. There were one or two high-minded and able men among the succe. . . This item ships from La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Bookseller Inventory # 9781235841446

Item Description: Berghahn Books. Hardback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Who Abolished Slavery?: Slave Revolts and Abolitionism, Seymour Drescher, Pieter C. Emmer, The past half-century has produced a mass of information regarding slave resistance, ranging from individual acts of disobedience to massive uprisings. Marques, one of the leading historians of slavery and abolition, argues that, in most cases, it is impossible to establish a direct relation between slaves' uprisings and the emancipation laws that would be approved in the western countries. The concept of world literature was mooted by the German writer and philosopher Goethe in the aftermath of the Napoleonic re mapping of Europe. He had suggested that world literature could arise from the disruption of cultural continuities through terrible wars engaged upon by combative nations. Considered thus world literature could become the agent through which cultures come to terms with complex constructs of the self and the other. World literature could transcend national projections of selfhood and otherness and move into transnational spaces where also the old hierarchies of centre and margins the empowered and powerless could be replaced by the open terrains of world discourse. The essays in the present volume have been written by European and Indian scholars and academics and are inclusive of as many linguistic groups as possible. The majority of the essays in this volume were presented at a conference organized by the department of English University of Mumbai in collaboration with the Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai to mark the 250th Birth Anniversary of Johann Von Goethe but some were specially commissioned. They have been organised under the heads of theme papers and postcolonial/post imperial literatures. The latter category includes Anglophone Francophone and Portuguese postcolonial/post imperial literatures as well as exilic and post war literatures in Germany. The collection opens with an exclusive wide ranging interview with the postcolonial theorist Homi K. Bhabha. In this interview Bhabha has expounded on postcoloniality minorities and the notion of world literature. This comprehensive anthology will thus enable scholars and researchers in the area to access multilingual post imperial and postcolonial literatures in a single space. 336 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 64573
