This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The beauty of the Connecticut River Valley in Massachusetts has always left visitors groping for superlatives, and the town of Northampton--once dubbed 'The Athens of the Connecticut Valley'--has lately experienced a renaissance. Interest in the city has only risen through the years, and an assessment of its prominence throughout history easily explains its consistent attraction. From its settling in 1654 to the present, Northampton has been a hotbed of activity, idealism, growth, and change. Walking the streets of Northampton at different times were revolutionaries like Daniel Shays, patriots like Joseph Hawley, religious visionaries like Jonathan Edwards, idealists like the members of the utopian community in Florence, and governors like Caleb Strong and future president Calvin Coolidge. Notables like Sojourner Truth, Alexander Graham Bell, and President Franklin Pierce came and left, but their influences have remained. 130 pp. Englisch.

In this vivid and captivating new photographic history, readers are transported back to an exciting time, when the town of Gravesend, Brooklyn was one of the six original towns later to become part of the great City of Brooklyn. Originally an isolated English-speaking community amidst many other Dutch areas in the region, Gravesend developed into a thriving seaside resort, with Coney Island becoming the 'playground of the world,' and Sheepshead Bay an important fishing community with fabulous places to dine and enjoy the fruits of the sea. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Schuylkill County is located in east central Pennsylvania in the rich southern fields of anthracite coal. The era when 'coal was king' has long since passed, but the story of the development of the anthracite coal industry that fueled the Industrial Revolution in the U.S. has not been lost. The vivid details and nuances of local community life from the 1850s to the 1920s are brought to light in this wonderful collection. When Broad Mountain was conquered by the railroads and the Mahanoy plane was built, coal could be brought up over the mountain to reach its markets. The transportation that was necessary to get the coal to the rapidly developing markets in Philadelphia, New York, and New England caused the development of the towns in northern Schuylkill County such as Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, and Ashland during the 1850s-1860s. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Raleigh: North Carolina's Capital City on Postcards contains more than two hundred postcard images, which together capture much of what life was like in the 'City of Oaks' and its neighbors in Wake County during the first half of the twentieth century. The Raleigh area has experienced tremendous growth since World War II, and much of what is fondly remembered by old-timers has been lost to the demands of development and the rigors of time. Some of the well-known landmarks, businesses, and characters, however, were captured on film by enterprising postcard photographers who were unknowingly creating an invaluable archive of historical data which now gives us an insight into the way life was lived in North Carolina's capital during the 'Golden Age of Postcards.' This wonderful new book brings to life the history of this diverse and dynamic region through carefully selected postcards from that era, accompanied by informative and insightful captions as well as a helpful essay on the history and importance of postcards. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Lower Mount Washington Valley became the gateway to the entire valley in the 1700s. Settlers saw both the scenery and the possibilities of the deep and steady rivers for water power and travel, the timber for homes, the rich earth for planting, and the abundance of food in forests and streams. The early years were not easy, and men and women faced the challenges of the wilderness: hard work, fierce wildlife, possible injury, and loneliness. Seeking companionship, families bonded together and created a sense of community amidst the mountains and valleys of New Hampshire's expansive north country. This collection of photographs, many never before published, graphically illustrates the beauty of the area, the strength and character of its people, and the simple and practical lines of the early homes, mills, and one-room schoolhouses. It depicts the gradual changes that took place over a century of life, from the 1850s to the 1950s. Tough, strong men and women, the early settlers often became landowners of substance. They left a legacy of the same qualities to their descendants, many of whom are still living in the Lower Mount Washington Valley. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -New Britain, Connecticut, is a city that almost didn't exist. In the mid-1750s, the settlers in this area separated from Kensington and founded the parish of New Britain with the establishment of the First Church. It was 1850 before parishioners incorporated as a town. Within twenty years, the town flourished and New Britain applied for and received a city charter. The people of New Britain then voted to incorporate as a city, but the historic motion passed only by the narrow margin of one vote! In this fascinating visual history, city historian Arlene C. Palmer examines the 125-year history of the 'Hardware City,' through rare photographs highlighting workplaces, treasured clubs and societies, favorite forms of entertainment, places of worship, and men and women who have boldly served their city and country. The cultural diversity and rich heritage of the city's families are also evident in the book's vivid pictures and informative text. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Settlers arrived in Pepperell as early as 1655, attracted by good farmland and the waters of the Nashua and Nissitissit Rivers. In a petition granted in 1742 by the general court, the area today recognized as Pepperell became known as Groton West Parish. Eventually the town was named in honor of Sir William Pepperell of Kittery, Maine. The settlers of Pepperell were patriotic and hardworking. Colonel William Prescott served admirably in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and in the late nineteenth century the town became well known for its very prosperous paper-making industry. Pepperell also came to attract visitors in the mid-nineteenth century, as it was home to five stagecoach relay stops and the Babbatassett Driving Park. In this marvelous new photographic history, author Joanne Saunders Foley chronicles the development of Pepperell from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Come along and enjoy vintage views of celebrations, parades, and firemens' musters, and read all about the 'witch' of North Pepperell. This marvelous new book gives form to many of the people, places, and events that have contributed to the history of the town. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -With Around Oswego, readers are invited to experience satisfying glimpses of over one hundred years of history and change. Active as a busy commercial port city in the 1880s, Oswego would redefine itself as a recreation and tourist destination by the 1980s. This evolution is witnessed through text and pictures, as factories, textile mills, lumber docks, coal trestles, and schooners were replaced with pleasure boats, marinas, hotels, restaurants, and parks. Familiar as well as rare and previously unpublished images document changes in the local landscape. Readers will meet some of Oswego's citizens, from international industrialist Thomas Kingford and Medal of Honor recipient and reformer Dr. Mary E. Walker, to soldiers and factory workers. Celebrate the opening of a turn-of-the-century playground, watch a circus parade, and enjoy a quiet picnic scene on a since-vanished shore line. Discover the outside world's interest in Oswego with photographs from United Nations Week in June 1943, and the World War II refugee center at Fort Ontario. 130 pp. Englisch.
