Notable among these in the early decades of the century were Frank Hindley Smith and Mrs W F R Weldon, while since the Second World War the Museum's collections have been enriched through gifts and requests from Thomas Balston, R A P Bevan, Molly Freeman, Christopher Hewett and others. This book gives the reader a taste of the wide range of the collection, with its representative group of Camden Town and Euston Road School pictures, and important early works by Bonnard, Picasso and Matisse. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Sumer was a region of the ancient world that today forms the southern part of Iraq. It is a vast, flat land of floodplains formed by the Rivers Tigris and Euphrates. It was here that some of the world's first cities arose and writing was invented. Archaeologists have explored the remains of some of Sumer's ancient settlements. They have made remarkable discoveries at places such as Uruk, Ur, Eridu, Nippur, Kish and Lagash. These show that the people of Sumer were great artists, builders, inventors, warriors and traders. By 3500 BC the population of some Sumerian towns had grown into cities. The largest was certainly Uruk, which had a population of at least 10,000. At this time this would have been the largest settlement on the planet. Writing was invented by the Sumerians around 3200 BC. This script is known as cunieform script and through it readers can learn about the Sumerians in their own words.Readers will discover what is meant by a ziggurat, how cunieform writing works, the importance of cylinder seals and stories of Sumerian kings, heroes and gods. This fascinating book is perfect for Key Stage 2 readers aged 9 and up to gain a picture of one of the earliest civilisations in the world. The story of one of the first and most important civilisations in history, and the first to invent writing. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Ashmolean Museum, founded in 1683, has strong claims to be the oldest surviving institutional museum open to the public, yet, it is also the private museum of the University of Oxford. Over the centuries a continuing pattern of generous benefaction has accumulated astonishing collections in the university, and those in the fields of art and archaeology are concentrated in the Ashmolean. They range in time, from finds seven or eight thousand years old to 20th-century masterpieces. This illustrated volume provides examples of: Early-Chinese bronzes, Ancient Egyptian artefacts, sculptures and coins from classical Greece and Rome, Anglo-Saxon glass, Chinese porcelain, Indian sculpture and manuscript illustration, Islamic ceramics and Japanese screen paintings. Over half the volume is devoted to reproductions from the museum's magnificent holdings of European art - silver, maiolica, porcelain, bronzes and marbles - together with paintings, watercolours and drawings. Works by Giotto, Giorgione, Uccello and Raphael, by Rembrandt and Rubens, by the French Impressionists and by English artists from Gainsborough to Stanley Spencer. The late Sir David Piper, Director of the Ashmolean Museum from 1973-85, compiled the original edition prior to his retirements in 1985. This new edition illustrates additional artefacts, paintings and drawings acquired by the museum during the last decade, selected and described by the present Director, Professor Christopher White. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Ashmolean Museum holds a world-class collection of over 200 prints made by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669). Widely hailed as the greatest painter of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt was also one of the most innovative and experimental printmakers of the seventeenth century. Rembrandt was extraordinary in creating prints not merely as multiples to be distributed but also as artistic expressions by using the etching printmaking technique for the sketchy compositions so typical of him. Almost drawing-like in appearance, these images were created by combining spontaneous lines with his remarkable sense for detail. Rembrandt was a keen observer and this clearly shows in his choice of subjects for his etchings: intense self-portraits with their penetrating gaze; atmospheric views of the Dutch countryside; lifelike beggars seen in the streets of his native Leiden; intimate family portraits as well as portrayals of his wealthy friends in Amsterdam; and biblical stories illustrated with numerous figures. This book presents Rembrandt as an unrivalled storyteller through a selection of over 70 prints from the Ashmolean collection through a variety of subjects ranging from 1630 until the late 1650s. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This book illustrates the full range of Camille Pissarro's work from the 1850's through to one of his last pictures, painted from his window in Le Havre in 1903 - Quai au Havre. A close friend of Cezanne and Monet, he was the only member of the group to exhibit in all eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1874-86. His eldest son, Lucien (1863-1944), settled in England in 1890 and became a founder member of the Camden Town Group. Also a wood engraver, he founded the Eragny Press named after his parents' village in France. This book also touches on the work of Lucien's younger brothers - Georges, Felix, Ludovic-Rudolphe and Paul-Emile, and of Lucien's daughter Orovida (1893-1968) who developed her own individual style as an etcher and painter, and, with her mother, presented Lucien's collection of family works to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This creative collaboration between artist Naoko Matsubara and poet Penny Boxall celebrates in words and colours the beauty and variety of the human hand. The series of dynamic woodcuts at the heart of this book was initially inspired by the artists wonder at the busy hand movements of her baby son and grew into a wider celebration of hands in all their extraordinary variety hands engaged in music, sport, prayer, or creative acts. The woodcuts convey a sense of joy and energy, whether exploring the symbolism of gestures, playing with form and colour, or expressing a mood or emotion. Penny Boxalls new poems were specially written to accompany the woodcuts. In their clarity and playfulness, their range of mood and their deceptive simplicity, they form a remarkable creative synergy with the art works. During the coronavirus pandemic the subject of hands and the idea of touch or its absence has taken on a new significance. Many of the images in the series have taken on powerful new meanings: healing hands, hands finding ways to occupy hours of furlough, or hands clapping in support of those working to keep us safe. We are particularly delighted that this elegant book has been designed by Yoshiki Waterhouse, Naoko Matsubaras son, whose baby hands were the original inspiration for the series. The distinguished woodcut artist Naoko Matsubara collaborates with award-winning poet Penny Boxall to celebrate the beauty and versatility of the human hand. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The year 2000 marks the centenary of the start of excavations at the site of Knossos on Crete, the centre of a Bronze Age civilisation which its excavator, Arthur Evans, called 'Minoan' after King Minos of Greek legend. The palace which he uncovered there was originally decorated with frescoed wall paintings, some of them showing figured scenes, which mostly survived only in a fragmentary and incomplete state. One of the most striking fresco images, and one which particularly engaged Evans's imagination, is the controversial figure of the Priest-King, whom Evans regarded as a portrayal of one of the priestly rulers of Knossos. This booklet gives an account of the history of its discovery, its re-creation and the important part it played in Evans's vision of Knossos. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Fine. 1st. 72 pages, colour illustrations; 27 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 7 February to 8 June 2019. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** "This is an intimate look at the career of contemporary art's most famous and, reportedly, expensive, artists. Jeff Koons himself curated the art which remains almost as controversial as it was when the works first hit the art scene by storm in the 1980's. Like the rest of the art world, Koons shocked and inspired the Brits and this publication documents his new exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, one of the world's most distinguished and oldest institutions which has also led the way in interpreting and presenting the important New in art. There are 43 color works along with two in black-and-white - among them his most famous - Equilibrium, Statuary, Banality, Antiquity and the recent Gazing Ball sculptures and paintings. Koons, together with guest curator, Norman Rosenthal, present a tableaux to provoke a unique conversation about the creations and the history of art and ideas with which the work engages. The publication also includes Alexander Sturgis's interview with Koons. From his earliest works Koons has explored the 'ready-made' and appropriated image - using unadulterated found objects and creating painstaking replicas of ancient sculptures and Old Master paintings which almost defy belief in their craftsmanship and precision. Throughout his career Koons has pushed at the boundaries of contemporary art practice, stretching the limits of what is possible." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Director's Foreword; interview with Jeff Koons (by Xa Sturgis); Jeff Koons and the Sheen and Shine of Time (Sir Norman Rosenthal); catalogue entries; Jeff Koon biography.
