Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Hefte zur Baukunst, a publication series issued by the Hermann Reemtsma Stiftung, puts the spotlight on architectural structures that are of historic importance, documenting their background, development, and professional restoration. The second volume in the series is devoted to the Iron Bridge, which crosses the River Servern, in Shropshire, 60km to the northwest of Birmingham. Owing to its vast resources of iron ore and coal, the region is known as the birthplace of Great Britain's Industrial Revolution. In order to establish a reliable link between the mines and factories situated on both sides of the River Severn, an initiative was set up in the 18th century to replace the unstable wooden bridge with a modern iron construction. The architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard (17231777) and his technical advisor John Wilkinson (17281808) designed a structure that had no precedent. They could not draw on any previous data since nobody at the time had any experience with, or had ever calculated, the load-bearing capacity of an iron structure. In the end, the bridge reputedly required a total of 385 tons of cast iron and more than 1,700 individual pieces. Instead of bolts and rivets, merely dovetails and tenon and mortise joints were used. The Iron Bridge was opened to traffic in 1781, and, in 1986, the structure was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An expert survey conducted in 2000 and in-depth research on materials, surfaces, and construction techniques resulted in a detailed conservation plan, which was successfully carried out in the following years. SELLING POINTS: . Publication on a major structure of the early industrial age Providing a record of the Iron Bridge's design, construction, and restoration . New series on masterpieces of architectural history, which includes Tieranatomisches Theater Berlin ISBN 9783862068234 Text in English and German. 24 colour, 2 b/w illustrations Hefte zur Baukunst, a publication series issued by the Hermann Reemtsma Stiftung, puts the spotlight on architectural structures that are of historic importance, documenting their background, development, and professional restoration. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The film works of Silke Schoenfeld (*1988) oscillate between installation, staged settings, and documentary. She engages with social media and the omnipresent flood of images: in this context, the artist highlights ambiguities, questions the authenticity of moving images, and thus situates the viewers in a vague space between staged and documented film. Schoenfeld is especially interested in places and situations so ordinary that we don't (or no longer) notice them places we pass by without a second thought. These initially inconspicuous locations and situations serve as launch pads for the artist to reflect on larger, socially relevant topics. Schoenfeld skillfully interweaves personal stories with historical and societal contexts, subtly directing attention to social phenomena, rituals, ideologies, and processes. The publication is being issued on occasion of the eponymous solo exhibition at the HMKV Dortmund and showcases five large-scale video installations. Numerous photo spreads and introductory texts are accompanied by a detailed interview with the artist. AUTHOR: Inke Arns, PhD, curator, since 2005 Artistic Director, and since 2017 Director of HMKV Hartware MedienKunstVerein in Dortmund, Germany . She has worked internationally as an independent curator, writer and theorist specialising in media art, net cultures, and Eastern Europe since 1993. In 2021-2022 Inke Arns held the position of Visiting Professor at the Art Academy in Muenster, Germany. She has been teaching at universities and art academies in Berlin, Leipzig, Zurich, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam (2000-2017), and has lectured and published internationally. SELLING POINTS: . Published as part of the HMKV Dortmund series . Includes a detailed interview with the artist . Published to coincide with an exhibition at HMKV, Dortmund, from October 2024 - February 2025 44 colour illustrations Silke Schoenfeld's film works oscillate between installation, staging and documentation, emphasising ambiguities, questioning the authenticity of moving images and thus locating the viewer in a vague space between staged and documented film. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The publication, which documents the eponymous exhibition at the Philara collection, highlights aspects of freedom, self-determination, and the ecstasy of physical love and brings together two internationally renowned artistic perspectives: William N. Copley and Dorothy Iannone. Whereas Copley was influenced by Dadaism, Surrealism, and Pop Art, Dorothy Iannone developed a unique visual language from American Expressionism, a movement overwhelmingly male-dominated in the 1950s. Here, for the first time, the works of Copley and Iannone are being presented in juxtaposition. Playful expressions of freedom and an appreciation of the mundane can be discerned in the work of both artists. A humorous approach to recurring pictorial elements, symbolism, narratives, and text are also revealed. During their lifetimes, the two artists had few points of contact. Independently of each other, both created a highly coherent visual language that manifests parallels as well as clear differences. Transcending gender roles, stereotypes, and social norms as well as the accompanying fight against censorship are characteristic of Iannone's pictures; Copley, on the other hand, selected depictions whose formulaic strictness and exaggeration of gender roles demonstrate a deeply ambiguous sense of humor to the point of absurdity. SELLING POINTS: . Copley and Iannone in dialogue for the first time . An artistic rupturing of gender roles and stereotypes . Works imbued with ambiguous humour . Includes an interview with Florence Bonnefous from the Dorothy Iannone Estate and Anthony Atlas from the William N. Copley Estate . Accompanies the exhibition at Sammlung Philara, Duesseldorf, 13.08.2023 - 14.01.2024 57 colour, 1 b/w illustrations The publication brings together two internationally renowned artistic perspectives: William N. Copley, influenced by Dadaism, Surrealism, and Pop Art, and Dorothy Iannone, who developed a unique visual language from American Expressionism. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In her art, Gaelle Choisne (*1985, lives and works in Paris and Berlin) addresses the world's complexity with its numerous political and cultural crises such as the overexploitation of nature and natural resources or the consequences of colonialism and the scars it has left. Her works are often designed as collaborative projects that evolve over years and are continuously redefined at changing locations and with varying participants. Choisne's long-term project Temple of love To hide is based on the idea of self-healing through sharing our experience with others, through our connection with our ancestors, respect for our historical heritage, and an inner physical balance. In a number of interviews, she asked female and transfeminine people about their situation as racialised women in contemporary society, including several women who have developed the ability to heal through various methods and techniques: for example, by creating communities or through family care, music, or alternative medicine. Her installation, composed of video projections and objects, presents itself as a safe space which highlights self-care and caring for others. Visitors are invited to participate in an energetic healing process or to drink soothing concoctions. SELLING POINTS: . An effort to self-heal through connecting with our ancestors and our historical heritage . Focusing on female and transfeminine perspectives . Installation art as safe spaces 73 colour illustrations An effort to self-heal through connecting with our ancestors and our historical heritage, focusing on female and transfeminine perspectives. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Gladys Kalichini (born 1989 in Chingola, Zambia) is a contemporary visual artist and academic who investigates how women have been portrayed in relation to a dominant, colonial past. For example, the artist sheds light on instances in which women have been deleted from historical narratives and the collective memory of society. As a result of her extensive research, Kalichini has demonstrated that women were intentionally marginalised in the official representations of Zambia's and Zimbabwe's struggles for independence. In her elaborate multimedia installations and video art, which she often develops on the basis of research material and photos from archives, Kalichini highlights the omissions in the dominant representations of the two countries' fight for freedom. She thus expands the history of their liberation struggle by drawing attention to the deletion and invisibility of female freedom fighters. By reminding the public of several of these women, Kalichini creates a diverse and complex alternative narrative of national independence. 36 colour, 20 b/w illustrations Gladys Kalichini is a contemporary visual artist and academic who investigates how women have been portrayed in relation to a dominant, colonial past. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Whether pizza is served as high-end cuisine or a poor man's food, this global product transcends the boundaries of culture and social class. The circular piece of dough has long become an established superfood. It is so much more than just something we eat. Aside from culinary considerations, the preparation, consumption and ubiquity of pizza involves at least as many social aspects. These must be taken into account in order to understand the entirety of this phenomenon. For instance, in sociology the "pizza effect" refers to reciprocal processes of reception and exchange and thus to the constant transformation of cultures. Only recently did the UNESCO in Paris allow Italy to formally register the preparation of pizza as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. That's iconic! The collection "Pizza is God" accompanies the eponymous international group exhibition. Situating a cultural phenomenon in the world of contemporary art, the exhibition will be staged by NRW-Forum Dusseldorf in 2018. This feast for the eyes, which combines painting, photography, net art, as well as video and performance, is complemented in the book by texts and essays written by renowned experts from the fields of food history, culture and science. 120 colour images Whether pizza is served as high-end cuisine or a poor man's food, this global product transcends the boundaries of culture and social class. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the autumn of 2020, Christo will wrap the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in silvery fabric for 16 days, returning to his signature style - after realising The Floating Piers in Italy, the London Mastaba, and a quarter of a century after he and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the Reichstag building in Berlin. As a prelude, a major exhibition at PalaisPopulaire in the German capital will celebrate this 25-year anniversary in the spring of 2020. At the same time, the Pompidou Center will pay tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude by staging The Pont Neuf Wrapped Documentary exhibition as well as a comprehensive show highlighting their early years in Paris. To accompany these events, Matthias Koddenberg, art historian and long-time friend of both Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude, who was the other half of the artistic duo until her death in 2009, has edited an elaborate collection of interviews. The book is composed of many conversations held between Koddenberg and Christo in the artist's New York studio over the last few years. With rare frankness, Christo describes how he fled from Bulgaria and made his way into the Western world. He talks about his time in Vienna and Geneva, his vibrant life in Paris that was full of hardship, and the fateful moment when he met Jeanne-Claude. This publication provides an exceptional inside view, uniting texts and numerous archival images and photographs, many of which have never been published before, or depict early works by Christo that have only recently been rediscovered. The videos address a variety of different topics and stories, ranging from labour conditions, structural changes, speculative technologies, or posthuman machines to technology (and its history) as well as artificial intelligence. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This catalogue for a show at HMKV Dortmund explores techno-shamanism in the arts today, taking Joseph Beuys, who cultivated the figure of the shaman throughout his career, as the starting point. In addition to viewing shamanism itself as a form of technology, this artistic approach uses (speculative) technology as a way of discovering shamanic powers. Contemporary artists are updating Beuys's strategies and themes for the digital age, deploying many of the same tropes. These acquired iconic status in Beuys's oeuvre, and were aimed at healing and transforming society, cultivating a spiritual approach to the environment, and subverting power structures and the logic of capitalism. The positions introduced here combine aspects that appear diametrically opposed: technology and shamanism, technical progress and esotericism, rational modernism and the mystical tradition. Today's artistic alchemists are engaged in a quest for "rare-earth elements" and metals, a fusion of the environment, technology, and artificial intelligence in order to create a technical/mythological description of the cosmos. Included here are works by: Morehshin Allahyari, Joseph Beuys, Mariechen Danz, Anja Dornieden & Juan David Gonzalez Monroy, Lucile Olympe Haute, knowbotiq, Sahej Rahal, Tabita Rezaire, Jana Kerima Stolzer & Lex Ruetten, Transformella (aLifveForm fed and cared for by JP Raether), Suzanne Treister, Anton Vidokle. Text in English and German. 51 colour, 7 b/w illustrations Inspired by the figure of the shaman, which Joseph Beuys cultivated throughout his life, this book explores contemporary technoshamanistic positions in art. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The exhibition presents two series of photographic works by the artist and photographer Ivan Baschang in which he occupies himself with a small, previously little-noticed detail of Paris street furniture, the so-called corbeilles. These baskets, originally installed as waste paper receptacles, were gradually dismantled and scrapped after the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001. Until then they were as much a part of the Paris parks as the street lamps or tree rings that are still a familiar feature of Paris.Following the photographic act with a medium-format analogue camera, Baschang rescued the paper bins from being scrapped, renovated them and transferred them from the outside space to the interior/exhibition room. There, as objets trouves, they correspond with the photographs and can continue to exist as an element of historical urban landscaping. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Food is a social phenomenon: it keeps us alive, influences our identity and creates social codes and values. Food and food preparation is no longer simply a question of sustenance, but of lifestyle as well. At the same time, however, agriculture and the current standards of food production are among the main drivers of climate change. What does the future of our food look like in the light of dwindling resources and the globalisation of the food industry? How can we produce enough food for the rapidly increasing global population in a way that respects the earth's ecosystems? Food Revolution 5.0 tries to find answers to these questions. The Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg has invited the Dutch design studio Makkink and Bey to create a multidisciplinary laboratory dedicated to the future of food, including four stages - farm, supermarket, kitchen and table as visual representations of the food cycle from start to finish. The book takes a critical look at the global food industry and presents visions of designers, architects, scientists and photographers. 123 colour illustrations A critical look at the global food industry and presents visions of designers, architects, scientists and photographers. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Over the last few years, the oeuvre of Mary Bauermeister (*1934) has been extensively rediscovered and celebrated. Today, she is considered to be one of Germany's leading female post-war artists. In the early 1960s, her studio in Cologne, located at Lintgasse 28, was the meeting place for artists, poets and composers such as Nam June Paik, Christo, Joseph Beuys, John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen, her future husband. They all used experimental music, readings, exhibitions, performances and happenings to explore the limits of social norms. Soon afterwards, Bauermeister moved to New York for a time, where she gained international acclaim. This book is the first to take a close look at those works in which Bauermeister privileges language as a means of artistic expression. She uses cyphers, symbols and textual fragments from nature, science, academia, philosophy, mathematics, music and art to create sensual, poetic drawings, collages and objects. Bauermeister first won fame with her celebrated 'lens boxes' in which convex glass, magnifiers and prisms merge with optically distorted images and words, forming magical cabinets of wonder. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. All About Eve is the latest series of the American artist Ruth Marten (*1949) which she has been developing since 2022. Here she unfolds a complex interplay involving the boundaries of reality, time, and genre. She began her career as a tattoo artist and later worked as an illustrator for various publishers and magazines. It was during this time that she discovered the technique of overpainting and collage, subsequently to become integral to her artistic practice. Marten's works are based on old graphic prints from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as on photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By reworking the originals, she creates a fascinating link between historical representations and contemporary perspectives. The All About Eve series reflects on the radical cultural shift of the 1920s: the heliogravures reworked by Marten depict female dancers from a French variety theatre, embodying the new freedoms of the post-war era. Through her artistic reworkings, Marten emphasises the diversity and complexity of female possibilities, infusing them with her characteristic dash of humour and subversion. AUTHOR: Ina Dinter studied art history and philosophy in Tuebingen and Florence. In 2015, she received her doctorate from the Catholic University of Eichstaett with the dissertation Claire, Rose, Blanche James Ensor's pictorial strategies in love gardens, nymph paintings and the late work on the Belgian painter and draughtsman James Ensor. Dinter completed a traineeship at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and curated exhibitions in several museums, including the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen and the Hamburger Bahnhof. In 2017 she became curator and exhibition director of the Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof. In 2019, she moved to Reutlingen as director of the Kunstmuseum Reutlingen im Spendhaus. In 2024, she moved to the Villa Zanders Art Museum in Bergisch Gladbach as its new director. SELLING POINTS: . New monograph on the highly acclaimed New York artist . Surreal visual worlds full of subtle humour . An artistic dialogue between past and present . Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Computer Grrrlz brings together 23 international artistic positions that negotiate the complex relationship between gender and technology in past and present. The book deals with the link between women and technology from the first human computers to the current revival of techno-feminist movements. An illustrated timeline with over 200 entries covers these developments from the 18th century to the present day. The publication presents artists, hackers, makers and researchers who are working on how to think differently about technology: by questioning the gender bias in big data and artificial intelligence, promoting an open and diversified Internet, and designing utopian technologies. The perspectives presented here address a broad range of topics: electronic colonialism, the place of minorities on the Internet, the sexist bias of algorithms, the dangerous dominance of white men in the development of artificial intelligence and digital surveillance, but also ideas on how we can change our traditional ways of thinking. Artists included: Morehshin Allahyari, Manetta Berends, Zach Blas & Jemima Wyman, Nadja Buttendorf, Elisabeth Caravella, Jennifer Chan, Aleksandra Domanovic, Louise Drulhe, Elisa Giardina Papa, Darsha Hewitt, Lauren Huret, Hyphen-Labs, Dasha Ilina, Roberte la Rousse, Mary Maggic, Caroline Martel, Lauren Moffatt, Simone C.
