Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Boule de Suif' (translated variously as 'Dumpling', 'Butterball', 'Ball of Fat' or 'Ball of Lard') is a famous short story by the late-19th century French writer Guy de Maupassant. It is arguably his most famous short story and is the title story for his collection on the Franco-Prussian War, entitled 'Boule de Suif et Autres Contes de la Guerre' ('Dumpling and Other Stories of the War'). The story is set in the Franco-Prussian War and follows a group of French residents of Rouen, recently occupied by the Prussian army. The ten travellers decide, for various reasons, to leave Rouen and flee to Le Havre in a stagecoach. Sharing the carriage are Boule de Suif or 'Butterball', a prostitute whose real name is Elisabeth Rousset; the strict Democrat Cornudet; a shop-owning couple from the petty bourgeoisie, M. and Mme. Loiseau; a wealthy upper-bourgeoisie factory-owner and his wife, M. and Mme. Carré-Lamadon; the Comte and Comtesse of Bréville; and two nuns. Thus, the carriage constitutes a microcosm of French society, representing different parts of the French population during the late 19th century. Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a popular French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and one of the form's finest exponents. Maupassant was a protégé of Flaubert and his stories are characterized by economy of style and efficient, effortless dénouements (outcomes). He wrote some 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse. His first published story, 'Boule de Suif' ('Ball of Fat'), is often considered his masterpiece.

Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Elizabeth Cady Stanton, born in 1815, was an American suffragist, social activist, abolitionist, and leading figure of the early women's rights movement. Along with her friend Susan B. Anthony, Canton was one of the very prominent faces of Women's Movement in America. Her Declaration of Sentiments, presented at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 New York, is often credited with initiating the first organized women's rights and women's suffrage movements in USA. Unlike her contemporaries, Stanton was also interested in various other issues pertaining to women like their parental and custody rights, property rights, employment and income rights, divorce, the economic health of the family, and birth control until her death in 1905. But even before being a suffragist, she had also been a champion of Abolitionist cause and envisaged the dream of a just society since the very beginning of her life. This edition brings to you the famed autobiography of this courageous woman in celebration of the undying spirit of freedom, equality and woman power. 'I am moved to recall what I can of my early days, what I thought and felt, that grown people may have a better understanding of children and do more for their happiness and development. I see so much tyranny exercised over children, even by well-disposed parents, and in so many varied forms, -a tyranny to which these parents are themselves insensible, -that I desire to paint my joys and sorrows in as vivid colors as possible, in the hope that I may do something to defend the weak from the strong.'.

Despite those hurdles, they fling themselves into a relationship. But Jez has secrets, like a tiny spoiled dog and a determined stalker.
