Als Mankell ein Jahr alt war, ließen sich seine Eltern scheiden. Er lebte danach zusammen mit seinem Vater und einer älteren Schwester, zuerst in Sveg in Härjedalen, wo sein Vater als Richter arbeitete und danach in Borås in Västergötland. Seine Mutter beging Selbstmord, als Mankell in den Zwanzigern war. Schon als Junge wollte Mankell Schriftsteller werden, interessierte sich aber auch für das Theater, weshalb er in Skara ein Schauspielstudium aufnahm. Henning Mankell begann 1966 als Regieassistent am Riks-Theater in Stockholm seine Theaterlaufbahn. Mit dem Ziel, die Gesellschaft zu demaskieren", schrieb und inszenierte er bereits als 20-Jähriger selbständig Stücke in Collageform. Nachdem er eine norwegische Frau kennengelernt hatte, zog er nach Norwegen, wo er dann in den 1970er Jahren überwiegend arbeitete und wohnte. Hier begann er Anfang der 1970er Jahre auch Prosa zu verfassen. 1973 veröffentlichte er mit Bergsprängaren seinen ersten Roman. Bis heute nehmen politische und gesellschaftliche Themen in seinen Büchern viel Raum ein. Viele dieser persönlichen Motive und Erfahrungen werden etwa in seinem 2008 erschienenen Kriminalroman Der Chinese verarbeitet. Seit den 1980er Jahren verlegte er seine Wirkungsstätte immer mehr nach Mosambik, dort beteiligte er sich am Aufbau eines Theaters. In seinem Roman Mörder ohne Gesicht schuf er die Figur des Kriminalkommissars Kurt Wallander. Seitdem hat er über den knorrigen Polizisten eine äußerst erfolgreiche Serie von Kriminalromanen veröffentlicht. Diese Romane stehen in der Tradition der von den Autoren Maj Sjöwall und Per Wahlöö verfassten Bücher über den Kriminalkommissar Martin Beck. Mankell lebt abwechselnd in Schweden und in Maputo (Mosambik), wo er ein Theater leitet. Als Autor hat er mehrere Bücher veröffentlicht, die seine afrikanischen Erfahrungen verarbeiten. Mankell hat deutsche Vorfahren. Er ist ein Ururenkel von Johann Hermann Mankel, der in Niederasphe, einem Ortsteil von Münchhausen im hessischen Landkreis Marburg-Biedenkopf, geboren wurde und später nach Schweden auswanderte.
