The book briefly examines contemporary events but concentrates on earlier times to produce a fine historical record of the mainly narrow coastal belt extending north from Pukerua Bay to Turakina. 206 pages including bibliography, index, 16 b/w illustrations, two maps. From the 1830s to the early 1900s NZers were frequently worried by the possibility of expansion of the Russian Empire in the South Pacific, with their country a possible target for occupation. To some degree the concern was justified, with NZ virtually defenceless, the protective Royal Navy deployed only a small force based in Australia and strength in troops was even lower. In this interesting account of a near-forgotten earlier Cold War the author approaches his topic from military, political, international perpsectives, how NZ administrations approached the problem and the extensive programme of fortifications built to protect the major ports. This is achieved through five specialist contributions covering The Maori, Pakeha Agriculture, Administration, Social History and The People Today. The opening c hapter deals with the original residents of the area, the second with the arrival of their European counterparts and their development of farming as the main economic focus of the district, the third studies the development of local body administration and civic facilities, with Social History devoted, in the main, to the different sub-sections of the county and prominant early families. With these first four chapters interweaving a comprehensive account of the historical, geographic, settlement and community affairs of the district the last looks overall at achievements there. This "different" approach to a local history resulted in a rounded and informative publication, well illustrated with plates, maps and diagrams. (A number of the photographs are excellent aerial shots of archeaological sites found in the county.) His biography looks at French society of that time, international relations and the life of La Perouse in depth. The Rangitikei County comprised a comparatively narrow strip of territory extending inland from the Tasman Sea, south east of Wanganui, into the highlands of the central North Island and the Kaimanawa Ranges beyond Taihape and Waiouru, with terrain ranging from coastal flatland, rolling hills to rugged and mountainous country. About the 1860s European penetration into the region began, but initially of an exploratory nature. What happened from there is recorded in detail by the author in 18 chapters covering the purchasing of land for settlement, the advent of commuications in the district, beginning with bridle tracks, the deveopment of the districts riches, particularly agriculture, changes in local administration that began in the 1950s, taking the story to the late 1970s and at all times tracking the progess of community and civic functions, with much additional information presented in seven appendices. Lambert's biographical account put on record the work and other acheivements of a previously little-known pioneer.
