First edition. Reprint of the exceedingly rare first edition of 1864. Limited to 300 copies. Cloth, 154 pp. Preface. Includes an 80 page "Record of The Troops Employed". Maps on endpapers. Illustrated with 8 reproductions of photographs made by the Whitney Gallery in St. Paul in the 1860's or 1870's of paintings made by Private Henry F.J. Knieff during the 1863 Sibley Expedition to the Missouri River in pursuit of hostile Dakota Indians. This important work presents the daily journal of Private Arthur M. Daniels from June 15 through September 12, 1863 as a participant in Brigadier General H.H. Sibley's Expedition in search and pursuit of hostile Dakota Indians through Minnesota and the Dakota Territory. The punitive expedition was in response to the Dakota Uprising of 1862 during which the Indians massacred many hundreds of innocent and defenseless settlers in the Minnesota River Valley. A fine copy. As New.
