Soft cover. Condition: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text; Paperback; 23.4 x 29.7 cm; 1.4 kg; 240 pages with 191 colour illustrations.; Adapted from the six volume RA Collection book entries: Vols I - IV The RA Collection of Chinese Ceramics: A Collector's Vision by Maria Antonia Pinto de Matos, Vol V - The RA Collection…of Enamelled Copper: A Collector's Vision by Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, Ana Moás, Ching-Fei Shih., Vol VI - The RA Collection of Cross-Cultural Works of Art: A Collector's Vision by Helder Carita, Alexandra Curvelo, Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, Bruno Alexandre Morais, Fernando António Baptista Pereira, William R. Sargent.; 100 Highlights from the Albuquerque Collection offers an exceptional journey through one of the world's most important private collections of Chinese export porcelain and cross-cultural works of art from Africa and Asia, assembled by the collector Renato de Albuquerque. Carefully curated by leading scholars, William R. Sargent and Valentina Bruccoleri, the publication presents one hundred outstanding objects selected for their artistic excellence, rarity and historical significance. Spanning roughly a period of 1,400 years, the works featured in this first catalogue for the Albuquerque Foundation reflect the collector's rigorous criteria in bringing together objects that not only illustrate, but also deepen our understanding of the wider field of material culture resulting from encounters between different peoples and cultures. Each highlight is accompanied by expert commentary that situates the object within its cultural, historical, and commercial contexts. The essays explore themes such as cross-cultural exchange and global trade while examining the enduring dialogue between East and West that helped shape and circulation of shared material heritage.

Unbumped spine head and tail, and sharp corners. Exceptionally clean binding. Text block firmly bound in and quite tight. Note: there…is moderate spine lean. With 251 numbered pages on coated stock. With an introductory article by Christiaan Jörg. Text includes a chronology and bibliography. 47 Japanese porcelain figures are prominently featured. With numerous color plates throughout, some full- page, including crisp detail of the featured items. No dust jacket, as issued [?]. Either unread or very gently read. A Near Fine copy. Scarce in any condition. 4 lbs. 2 oz. This is the first exhibition catalogue from Jorge Welsh that is dedicated to the theme of Japanese porcelain in the form of human and animal figures, mostly produced for the export market during the second half of the 17th and throughout the 18th centuries. The animals represented are usually found amongst Japanese iconography, whilst the human figures are inspired by Japanese cosmopolitan society, deities and legendary local heroes. The nature of the trade for Japanese porcelain has determined the rarity of these pieces, which, combined with their decorative, formal beauty, as well as their quality, made them highly appreciated in Europe, and may also have appealed to the Japanese domestic market.

English text; Paperback; 240 pages with 220 colour illustrations; 23.8 x 29.9 cm; 1.5 kg; Catalogue for the exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; "Global by Design: Chinese Ceramics from the R. Albuquerque Collection", focuses on Chinese ceramics of the late 16th t…o the 18th century, a period during which they became a global luxury, transforming both the European ceramic industry and also the styles of dining and drinking. The exhibition comprises 48 entries with 60 exquisite and unusual pieces from an important Brazilian private collection, never exhibited before, exploring the way in which 18th-century artists, when faced with the global idioms that had developed at the time, made artistic choices that allowed them to create an endless range of spectacular and visually imaginative works. This presentation will challenge the tradition of cataloguing Chinese ceramics as domestic or trade items. Besides exploring the trade in Chinese ceramics within Asia, the exhibition focus on the development of shapes and designs that reflect the history of exchange between China and the Islamic world as well as the period - the late 16th century - when works reflecting both the Chinese and Islamic traditions were introduced and incorporated into Europe and the Americas. Introduction by Denise Patry Leidy, Brooke Russell Astor Curator of Chinese Art, of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, and entries by Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, director of the Tile Museum in Lisbon and expert in Chinese export ceramics. The same author, Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, has written The RA Collection: A Collector's Vision published by Jorge Welsh Books in 2011. The reference book on Chinese export porcelain, a three-volume boxed set of hardcover books containing more than 900 illustrations, is a work of art in itself. The 1200 pages include chapters on earthenware, stoneware, porcelain of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, works with Western shapes and decoration and armorial Chinese export porcelain in the RA Collection.

Hardcover. Condition: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover in slipcase (2 VOLUMES); 594 pages, 626 colour illustrations and 2 black & white illustrations; 312 colour illustrations; 23.5 x 29.7 cm; 4.4 kg; Volume One - Introduction: Teapots for the Domestic Market; Volume Two - Teapots for the Domestic Market.; Th…is two-volume book focuses on the artistic, cultural, and historical motifs of Chinese porcelain teapots made for the domestic market, and will ultimately be part of a four-volume set, the third and fourth volumes to be dedicated to teapots made for the export market. The collection was started by Franco Cutrupia in 1981, who, soon after arriving in China, became fascinated by the beauty, variety of shapes, and decorative motifs of Chinese porcelain teapots. Later he was joined in his passion for Chinese porcelain by his wife, Pauline Ngai, a Chinese history major and author of this book. The book examines the auspicious motifs that appear in Chinese porcelain decoration, explored through those found on the teapots from the Sapientia Collection. Through the study of these motifs, the author opens up a fascinating insight into Chinese culture and the interpretation of the meanings and significance of each motif. It goes much further than simply cataloguing a collection, exploring deep into Chinese culture and its long and intricate history. The first volume offers a comprehensive introduction, providing a wide perspective on the development and production of containers for a variety of drinking liquids and later teapots, from the Neolithic era through to the 1980's. The second volume discusses 193 of the Sapientia Collection of porcelain teapots, made for the domestic market, covering a period from the 18th to the 20th century. The author, Pauline Ngai, deciphers each motif, their embodied stories, auspicious meanings, and symbols, transforming these treasured objects into sources from which to better understand Chinese culture and history. This book, the result of many years of original research, is a serious reference work and encyclopaedic in interpreting those scenes and auspicious symbols originally intended for the Chinese public. As such it is a valuable resource for all those studying or interested in the subject.

The Interior is in very good condition and is signed by both authors and editors and includes a dedication to a previous owner.; The first comprehensive study on Chinese Porcelain Tankards and Mugs, with pieces from 23 museums, 18 private collectors and 3 dealers, from around the world.; Tankards and mugs are vessels that illuminate many aspects of social, economic and art history. This book focuses on Chinese export porcelain tankards and mugs dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Drinking is a pleasurable and social activity, enjoyed by most cultures of the world. In China, alcohol was used for feasts, festivals and religious ritual as early as the Neolithic age. In the West, beer, cider and porter were drunk on both convivial and solemn occasions. Vessels used to contain drink were often treasured containers, and time and care was spent on their manufacture and decoration. They needed to be practical, functional utensils, but also beautiful. When Chinese porcelain reached Europe an ideal match was made. Top quality wares were highly regarded luxury items, and they included tankards and mugs. This book is illustrated with 197 Chinese porcelain tankards and mugs, each catalogued and referenced in detail. They range from blue and white to delicately enamelled vessels, some emblazoned with western designs and coats of arms. The introductory essays discuss the history of a vessel that played an important role in society, stimulating design and decoration while also being symbolic of kinship and harmony.

It is considered by many as one of the most important kuancai folding screens so far recorded, certainly the most important example of the few recorded depicting European figures. Illustrating the diversity and iconographic richness found in kuancai lacquer, it depicts two intricate and masterfully executed scenes of The Dutch Tribute and the West Lake in Hangzhou. Featuring articles by three scholars, this publication seeks to cover what is currently known about kuancai lacquer, the present screen, its historical context and the parallels with Japanese folding screens, which, from the 15th century onward, often also depicted maritime trade and foreign merchants - including the Chinese, Portuguese, and later, the Dutch.

Albuquerque Collection, loans to other temporary exhibitions and conferences based on the collection, this volume is the result of Renato de Albuquerque's quest to continue to share his collection and the research undertaken on it with the wider public. The sixth volume of the RA Collection concludes a series of publications, the first five of which are dedicated to Chinese ceramics and enamelled copper, reflecting the extraordinary collection of works of art assembled by the collector Renato de Albuquerque. This final volume, The RA Collection of Cross-Cultural Works of Art: A Collector's Vision is dedicated to works of art other than porcelain and enamel on copper, which have resulted from the interaction between African, Asian and Western cultures. It includes pieces from ancient Sierra Leone, the Kingdom of Kongo, Sri Lanka, India, China, the Philippines and Japan; these hybrids works of art are of historical significance and were produced during a period when a new common worldwide cultural heritage had emerged. The 57 book entries illustrate and discuss some of the most iconic pieces of Renato Albuquerque's collection of cross-cultural works of art, written by six authors, each covering a particular field of expertise.
