Technic: Lithography, colorit: original colored, condition: Perfect condition, size (in cm): 15,5 x 21 cm; - Decorative view of the city Jerusalem from the south in Israel. After the Scottish painter David Roberts, RA ( 1796- 1864 London).; History: One of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem was named as "Urusalima" on ancient Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets, probably meaning "City of Shalem". During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed at least twice. The part of Jerusalem called the City of David was settled in the 4th millennium BCEIn 1538, walls were built around Jerusalem under Suleiman the Magnificent. Today those walls define the Old City, which has been traditionally divided into four quarter. There is no evidence of a permanent settlement in the City of David area until the early Bronze Age . Many Jewish tombs from the Second Temple period have been rediscovered in Jerusalem. One example, discovered north of the Old City, contains human remains in an ossuary decorated with the Aramaic inscription "Simon the Temple Builder. In 1517, Jerusalem and environs fell to the Ottoman Turks, who generally remained in control until 1917 .Jerusalem enjoyed a prosperous period of renewal and peace under Suleiman the Magnificent ? including the rebuilding of magnificent walls around the Old City. Throughout much of Ottoman rule, Jerusalem remained a provincial, if religiously important center, and did not straddle the main trade route between Damascus and Cairo. The English reference book Modern history or the present state of all nations, written in 1744, stated that "Jerusalem is still reckoned the capital city of Palestine, though much fallen from its ancient grandeaur". The Ottomans brought many innovations: modern postal systems run by the various consulates and regular stagecoach and carriage services were among the first signs of modernization in the city. In the mid 19th century, the Ottomans constructed the first paved road from Jaffa to Jerusalem, and by 1892 the railroad had reached the city.

The guidebook provides information on public buildings, parks, gardens and the riverside in London. It contains maps and photos as well as a pictorial bus route, as seen from the top of a bus. It was designed by Verney L Danvers, a commercial artist who also created a number of posters for London County Council Tramways, the London North Eastern Railway, the Southern Railway, and London Transport.

Original poster. Color lithograph. 40 x 25 inches. This poster features an illustration of an idyllic English village scene. Villagers sit beneath large trees on the grass in front of a church. They are surrounded by cottages with thatched roofs. The text at the top indicates the motivational nature of the poster, reminding the viewer what they were fighting for. It reads: "The Underground Railways of London, knowing how many of their passengers are now engaged on important business in France and other parts of the world, send out this reminder of home." Beneath the image is printed the poem "A Wish" by Samuel Rogers. Sir George Clausen RA (1852-1944) was an English artist and illustrator. He held the post of Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy between 1904-06 and was appointed an official war artist in 1917. Some small tears to margins but no loss to printed area. Otherwise good condition.

First Edition Format of poster: Double Royal. 100cm x 64cm. Printed in black and blue on thin poster paper. Poster is mounted on archival linen. A few closed tears that extend into the margins of the image. Overall, a clean attractive copy. Unknown Artist. Rare. This was the poster for the Memorial Service of Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) and his men. He led the Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole in 1910-1913. It was a British Antarctic Expedition which aimed to conduct scientific studies, but its main objective was to become first persons to reach the South Pole. However, when they arrived, a flag was already there-- the Norwegian Expedition had beaten them by a month. On the journey back, affected by frostbite, sickness and fatigue, Scott's team members all perished. In March, huddled in their tent, Oates told the others, "I am just going outside and may be some time," and stepped outside to his death. The poster depicts the haunting footprints and sledge marks going off in the distance towards death. The memorial service was attended by the King and other officials, such as Lord Mayor and Sir David Burnett. There is a short video by the British Film Institute, on the arrival of these figures to St. Paul's cathedral available currently on Youtube. The film also shows the huge crowd present; contemporary accounts say there was around 10,000 people who couldn't get in the cathedral and filled the streets. The poster was printed on February 12, two days prior to the memorial service. There were only 500 posters printed and due to the fleeting nature of the event and the short notice, the poster is very rare. It would appear to not be present in the archives of The Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) or in the British Library. This is a spectacular ephemeral item related to the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition. Other than the example in the Transportation Museum in London, we can find no other examples anywhere, including in any of the standard books about Scott or the expedition.
