Paperback. Reprint Edition. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of rubbing; the front endpaper has been clipped at the upper corner. The binding leans ever so slightly, but remains perfectly secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 286pp. Reprint Edition. First published in Hardcover in 1980. Trade Paperback. An artfully written humourous history of concepts. He covers modern concepts of origins, covering archaeology, hominid discoveries, and hoaxes. Connell reports various incidents of culture and exploration, providing little known facts about how we got to where we are. The author provides a serious critical history but exhibits a wry humour. I can just see the gleam in his eye as he reflects on events and attitudes, while presenting the sum of our knowledge, up to his period.

Though Merrill sees prose as "a mildly nightmarish medium, to which there is no end ," Recitative reminds us that this poet can nevertheless write appealing prose on a wide range of subjects. The selections, spanning 40 years, are collected under four topics. "Writing" includes autobiographical essays and interviews conducted by David Kalstone, Donald Sheehan, and Ashley Brown, among others. "Writers" includes Merrill's views of Dante, informed by the experience of producing his own epic - the Sandover trilogyand Elizabeth Bishop - whose humanity he admires. "Occasions" includes several unusual smaller piecesfor instance, an essay on Corot. The volume ends with three short stories not readily available.

The First Edition was published in 1966. Trade Paperback. Spurned by his wife at home and by superiors at work, a young man sits in his cramped San Francisco apartment during the turbulent 1960s and channels everything around him into a diary that is a perfect record of a world going to pieces. Spurned by his wife at home and by superiors at work, a young man sits in his cramped San Francisco apartment during the turbulent 1960s and channels everything around him into a diary that is a perfect record of a world going to hell. This is the diary of a rapist. It is also an exploration of the degenerating thought patterns of this man's mind. The first thing one notices about this work is the lack of abject sexuality.there are no long erotic dream sequences, no detailed review of violent acts, no endless explorations into kinky sex. Our main character (I refuse to use the term "anti-hero") thinks of himself as a witty bon vivant who should have the power to mesmerize a certain woman. You discover midway that at some point he abused this woman and is now taunting her. Then he begins to unravel and slowly descends into madness that we view through his increasingly obscure diary entries. Fascinating read.
