Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Ohio Historical Society. Zoar An Ohio Experiment in Communalism. Columbus: The Ohio Historical Society, 1956, 74 pp. *** This copy is a second printing. Zoar village is located in north central Ohio's Tuscarawas Valley. It was founded by German Separatists in 1817. They had fled from the Kingdom of Wurttemburg, especially from the Stuttgart region, breaking from the Lutheran church. They founded a communistic village for agricultural and industrial production, the object to be as self-sufficient as possible. The community flourished for a while but by 1890 was about gone. Many of the village structures still survive and the site is an historical landmark. The modern example are the Hutterite colonies (Mennonite) that dot the western states, though they bear no relation to German Separists of Zoar. With a number of b& w photo illustrations. This booklet is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Bound in light green, illustrated paper covers with moderate wear, light soil. There is some discoloring from sunning on spine and some cover edges and some spotting on back cover. The contents are clean and complete in a good staple binding. A little foxing on title page. *** 8 inches tall by 5.5.
