Seller: Don's Book Store, Albuquerque, NM, U.S.A.
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. 25 Pages. No defects noted to this As New book with interior text and illustration pages near flawless. Illustrated with color photographs on almost every page. This account is intentionally brief and condensed, not meant to go into a detailed presentation, nevertheless giving the reader useful guidelines for further study. The strategic geographical position of the Arabian Peninsula on the natural trade and communication routes between Africa and the Middle East on one hand, and Europe and the Far East on the other, brought Oman in contact with the outside world from the earliest times when man knew how to traverse the sea using mast and sail. Even the ancient name 'Magan' was given to Oman by the Sumerians who used the Omani copper exported to Mesopotamia in Omani ships during the 3rd Millennium B.C. This mineral was produced near Sohar, a port town north of Muscat from the 4th Millennium B.C. Recent excavations have revealed seals made of stone dating back to the 3rd Millennium. Exports to Ur also included sea shells and dried shark skins. A cuneiform tablet dated 2300 B.C. tells about Sargon, the Akkadian Emperor praising the ships from Dilmun (Bahrain) and Magan (Oman) that used to tie up along-side the quay of Akkad. A further reference to Magan is found in the famous Epic of King Gilgamesh which says that King Naran Sin conquered Magan in the 2nd Millennium B.C. Another ancient name Mazoon was given to Oman by the Achaemenid Emperor, Cyrus, who captured the coastal region of Sohar in 563 B.C. Man lived from very early times, certainly from the 5th Millennium in small communities on the coastal areas like Al-Qurm, on the outskirts of Muscat, where excavations of graves and food remains give a fairly good idea of his life. The most recent history of Oman is the history of a country trying to find a balance between the coast, which is open to foreign contacts and conservative interior The prosperity of the country kept slowly deteriorating until the discovery of oil brought a new wealth, Oman has been restored to her rightful place among the modern community of nations.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A G+ hardcover in a VG dust jacket. The spelling of 'Civilisation' in the title does use an 's' rather than a 'z'. The title also has the following additional subtitle: 'Towards a Knowledge and Service Economy.' The stated ISBN 1871408239 is apparently invalid. The illustrated ffep has a penned non-author inscription and a stain along the fore edge. While the text pages have a few penciled markings, the contents are overwhelmingly clean, fully legible, complete, and securely bound. Pen mark on the the pages' bottom edge near the spine. The blue paper-covered covers with blind stamped titling on the upper board are well rubbed along a portion of the bottom edge of the upper board. There is also a one-inch razor cut along the front spine edge from the bottom. The dust jacket is a bit rubbed along the top and bottom edges with additional wear in the upper corners and at the head of the spine. There is also some discoloration at the head of the spine and adjoining areas in the front and the rear. No ex-library markings.
