The song was also featured in the 1968 film The Green Berets, based on Moore's book, which starred John Wayne. His last book, Wars of the Green Berets, co-authored with Col. Mike 'Doc' Lennon, was released in June 2007. At the time of his death, Moore was residing near Fort Campbell home of the 5th Special Forces Group; he was working on his memoirs and three other books. 'In 1982, Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir wrote "The Assassin's Handbook," a reader's guide to their long running Destroyer series of books. From the book "A growing rend threatens all civilization and it must be stopped. I refer, of course, to the amateur assassin - that crazed individual who kills willy-nilly with no purpose or profit in mind. We have to do something about these lunatics. They are hurting the market. This book tells of the glory of real assassins, the Masters of the House of Sinanju, so you can appreciate true professionalism. A book inside this book also tells how Remo Williams came to be given Sinanju, but he is white and doesn't count and is hardly worth discussing.' xii+285 pages. 5.25 x 8 inches. First Edition
Mass market paperback. Condition: Good. First Printing, May 1977. xxx, 322 pages. Illustrations. Maps. Chronology. Cover worn and soiled. Some edge soiling. Red stamp on bottom edge. Includes Preface, A Note, and Introduction, as well as chapters on The Retreat, Training Ground, and The Offensive, as well as Postscript; Postscript 1976; and Chronology of the Spanish Civil War. This book has been called the best descriptive narrative of the Spanish Civil War. Vivid and honest, it conveys the chaos and cruelty of war. One of the sharpest and grimmest portraits of men in English in any war, Alvah Bessie's description of the men and the battles are superb. Alvah Cecil Bessie (June 4, 1904 - July 21, 1985) was an American novelist, journalist and screenwriter who was blacklisted by the movie studios for being one of the Hollywood Ten who refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. During the 1930s, Bessie became alarmed at the rise of fascism, and began working for the anti-fascist cause. Through 1938 Bessie fought as a volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. Upon his return, he wrote a book about his experiences, Men in Battle. About the book, Ernest Hemingway commented: A true, honest, fine book. Bessie writes truly and finely of all that he could see . and he saw enough. Bessie then worked as the film reviewer for the left-wing magazine The New Masses. Bessie wrote screenplays for Warner Bros., and other studios during the mid and late 1940s. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Story for the patriotic Warner's film Objective Burma (1945). The Lincoln Battalion was the 17th (later the 58th) battalion of the XV International Brigade, a mixed brigade of the International Brigades also known as Abraham Lincoln Brigade. It was organized by the Communist International with great care to conceal or minimize the communist character of the enterprise. Attractive names were deliberately chosen for the International Brigades, such as "Garibaldi" in Italy or "Abraham Lincoln" in the United States. The Lincoln Brigade was formed by a group of volunteers from the United States who served in the Spanish Civil War as soldiers, technicians, medical personnel and aviators fighting for Spanish Republican forces against the forces of General Francisco Franco and his Nationalist faction. The Lincoln Brigade integrated white and black volunteers on an equal basis. Of the approximately 3,015 volunteers from the US, 681 were killed in action or died of wounds or sickness. Most of the original volunteers in the battalion were communists or Soviet sympathizers. It is difficult to list exactly how many members of the battalion were communists because political ideology was not a litmus test for serving in the war. Historians and veterans of the battalion estimate that between 50 and 80% of the battalion were actively communist. It is certain though that the vast majority of the commanding officers were communists. Unlike most of their European counterparts, the Americans in the International Brigade were much more likely to be students and to not have ever seen military service before the war. Bessie joined the Lincoln Battalion during the second half of the 1938 Spring retreats and went through the Ebro offensive. His account is personal and animated. It shows the seamy side with less reserve (Public Libraries watch out). He recognizes cracking nerves and tempers. He senses the deep undercurrent of comradeship. One is more aware of the radical element. The writing is vociferous, interpretative and readable. His book is concentrated in content and expression than broader contemporary accounts.
