Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st. ***FALL CLEARANCE SALE*** xii, 269 pages, [16] pages of plates, illustrations, map; 24 cm. Tight, clean copy. Fine DJ. A fine copy of the first printing. "In the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the late twentieth century was a time of unprecedented hope for democracy and freedom in Eastern Europe. The collapse of the Soviet Union left in its wake a number of independent countries where the Scorpions' 1990 pop ballad "Wind of Change" became a rallying cry. Communist propaganda was finally being displaced by Western ideals of a free press.Less than two decades ago, young writers, journalists, and adventurers such as Katya Cengel flocked from the West eastward to cities like Prague and Budapest, seeking out terra nova. Despite the region's appeal, neither Kyiv in the Ukraine nor Riga in Latvia was the type of place you would expect to find a twenty-two-year-old Californian just out of college. Kyiv was too close to Moscow. Riga was too small to matter--and too cold. But Cengel ended up living and working in both. This book is her remarkable story.Cengel first took a job at the Baltic Times just seven years after Latvia regained its independence. The idea of a free press in the Eastern Bloc was still so promising that she ultimately moved to the Ukraine. From there Cengel made several trips to Chernobyl, site of the world's worst nuclear disaster. It was at Chernobyl that she met her fiance , but as she fell in love, the Ukraine collapsed into what would become the Orange Revolution, bringing it to the brink of political disintegration and civil war. Ultimately, this fall of idealism in the East underscores Cengel's own loss of innocence. From Chernobyl with Love is an indelible portrait of this historical epoch and a memoir of the highest order." - Publisher. Size: 8vo. Collectible.

Lincoln, Nebraska]: Potomac Books, an imprint of the University of Nebraska Press, 2017, xix, 322pp., . "The spectacular murders of a distinguished British scientist, his wife, and their young daughter in the depths of rural France in 1952 prompted one of the most notorious criminal investigations in postwar Europe. It is still a matter of passionate debate in France. Sir Jack Drummond, with his wife, Lady Anne, and their ten-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, were on holiday on the French Riviera when they stopped to make camp just off the road near a farm called La Grand' Terre in Provence. The family was found murdered the next morning. More than two years later, the barely literate, seventy-five-year-old proprietor of La Grand' Terre, Gaston Dominici, was brought to trial, convicted, and condemned to death by guillotine. When Dominici was convicted, there was general agreement that the ignorant, pitiless, and depraved old peasant had gotten what he deserved. At the time, he stood for everything backward and brutish about a peasantry left behind in the wake of France's postwar transformation and burgeoning prosperity. But with time perspectives changed. Subsequent inquiries coupled with widespread doubts and misgivings prompted President de Gaulle to order his release from prison in 1960, and by the 1980s many in France came to believe - against all evidence - that Gaston Dominici was innocent. He had become a romanticized symbol of a simpler, genuine, and somehow more honest life from a bygone era. Reconstructing the facts of the Drummond murders, The Dominici Affair redefines one of France's most puzzling crimes and illustrates the profound changes in French society that took place following the Second World War.". Appendix 1: List of People, Appendix 2: List of Institutions, Bibliography. Index. Publisher's ephemera laid in. Vladimír Dzuro, Commissioner (ret.), worked as a criminal detective between 1983 and 1995, initially investigating violent crime with the Criminal Investigation Department in Prague and later at the National Central Bureau of Interpol in Prague. In 1994, Vladimír actively participated in the work of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in the former Yugoslavia. In April 1995, he began a ten-year stint as an investigator with the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague. Vladimír currently works as Chief of Headquarters Office at the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services in New York. This is the riveting true story of finding justice for the people of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dzuro's work as a Czech criminal investigator in the 1990s brings him to the former Yugoslavia to pursue the war criminals who brought unspeakable horror to innocent civilians. Drawing from the notes he kept, Dzuro recounts how he and his colleagues risked everything to bring the guilty to justice. Dzuro provides a gripping account of how he and other investigators picked up the barest of leads that eventually led them to the gravesite where they exhumed the bodies. They were able to track down Dokmanovi ; taking him into custody was a different story altogether. The politics that led to the war hindered justice once it ended. Without any thoughts of risk to their own personal safety, Dzuro and his colleagues were determined to bring Dokmanovi to justice. The Investigator provides a realistic picture of the war crime investigations that led to the successful prosecution of a number of war criminals.

Dunford served three years as the U.S. ambassador to Oman and served four years, including during the 1990-91 Gulf War, as the deputy ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He is a member of the governing board of the University of Arizona's Center for Middle East Studies. He has taught courses on the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Middle East business environment at the University of Arizona and has consulted for both the government and the private sector on Middle East issues. He is the coauthor of Talking to Strangers: The Struggle to Rebuild Iraq's Foreign Ministry. This book offers a fresh perspective on the politicization of the U.S. diplomatic corps and the militarization of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. This book begins with the 1981 assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, continues through two Gulf wars, and ends with the U.S. withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq is 2011. The author offers an in-depth look by a career diplomat at how U.S. soft power has been allowed to atrophy. It chronicles three decades of dealing not just with foreign policy challenges and opportunities but also with the frustrations of working with bureaucrats and politicians who don't understand the work and are unwilling to listen to those who do. The book makes clear that the decline of our diplomatic capability began well before the election of Donald Trump. It recommends that instead of trying to make soldiers into diplomats and diplomats into soldiers, we invest in a truly professional diplomatic service.

He has recently been named a Professor of Practice with the Arizona State University School of Politics & Global Studies, and is a co-founder of and a Senior Fellow with the Modern War Institute at West Point. Jaym Gates is an author and editor whose focus ranges from futurism consulting to disaster response. The most successful film franchise of all time, Star Wars thrillingly depicts an epic multigenerational conflict fought a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. But the Star Wars saga has as much to say about successful strategies and real-life warfare waged in our own time and place. Strategy Strikes Back brings together over thirty of today's top military and strategic experts, including generals, policy advisors, seasoned diplomats, counterinsurgency strategists, science fiction writers, war journalists, and ground-level military officers, to explain the strategy and the art of war by way of the Star Wars films. Each chapter of Strategy Strikes Back provides a relatable, outside-the-box way to simplify and clarify the complexities of modern military conflict. A chapter on the case for planet building on the forest moon of Endor by World War Z author Max Brooks offers a unique way to understand our own sustained engagement in war-ravaged societies such as Afghanistan. Another chapter on the counterinsurgency waged by Darth Vader against the Rebellion sheds light on the logic behind past military incursions in Iraq. Whether using the destruction of Alderaan as a means to explore the political implications of targeting civilians, examining the pivotal decisions made by Yoda and the Jedi Council to differentiate strategic leadership in theory and in practice, or considering the ruthlessness of Imperial leaders to explain the toxicity of top-down leadership in times of war and battle, Strategy Strikes Back gives fans of Star Wars and aspiring military minds alike an inspiring and entertaining means of understanding many facets of modern warfare. It is a book as captivating and enthralling as Star Wars itself.

Brian Shellum's publications at the Defense Intelligence Agency include Defense Intelligence Support in the Gulf War: A Chronology (1997), At the Creation, 1961-1965: Origination Documents of the Defense Intelligence Agency (2002). His third book titled African American Officers in Liberia: A Pestiferous Rotation, 1910-1942 was released by the University of Nebraska Press in August 2018. This is the story of seventeen African American officers who trained, reorganized, and commanded the Liberian Frontier Force from 1910 to 1942. In this West African country founded by freed black American slaves, African American officers performed their duties for a country that was, at best, ambivalent about having them serve under arms at home and abroad. The United States extended its newfound imperial reach and policy of "Dollar Diplomacy" to Liberia, a country it considered a U.S. protectorate. Brian G. Shellum explores U.S. foreign policy toward Liberia and the African American diaspora, while detailing the African American military experience in the first half of the twentieth century. Shellum brings to life the story of the African American officers who carried out a dangerous mission in Liberia for an American government that did not treat them as equal citizens in their homeland, and he provides recognition for their critical role in preserving the independence of Liberia.

DJ has slight wear and soiling. This is one of the ADST-DACOR Diplomats and Diplomacy Series. Association of Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) and DACOR creates this series in 1995. This is the sixty-fifth volume in this series. Prudence Bushnell (born 1946) is an American diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Kenya and as United States Ambassador to Guatemala. In 1993, Ambassador Moose was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs by President Bill Clinton. Bushnell remained Deputy Assistant Secretary until being nominated by President Clinton to serve as Ambassador to Kenya in 1996. Upon confirmation by the United States Senate, Bushnell took up residence in Nairobi. Bushnell used her office to push Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi to institute democratic reforms and to root out corruption in his government, a major drag on Kenya's economy. At the time of the bombing, Bushnell was attending a meeting with the Kenyan Trade Minister, Joseph J. Kamotho in the Cooperative Bank Building next to the embassy. She was knocked unconscious by the blast and badly cut by flying glass. Ultimately, 12 embassy staff were killed along with 212 Kenyans and 4,000 people were injured. Prudence Bushnell, then the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, bore witness to the al-Qaeda bombings of the American embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. She saw how these events unfolded and faded into history's background firsthand. In her compelling new memoir, Terrorism, Betrayal, and Resilience: My Story of the 1998 U.S. Embassy Bombings, Bushnell shares what transpired on that fateful day. She also probes why the bombings were possible, considering contemporary U.S. surveillance of al-Qaeda. Looking ahead, Bushnell also explores how today's leaders can sidestep their predecessors' miscalculations and prevent similar tragedies.

He holds an MLA from the University of Chicago. His father, Roger L. Easton, led the Space Applications Branch of the Naval Research Laboratory from the Vanguard satellite era to the early days of GPS development. Eric F. Frazier is a former newspaper reporter who covered governmental affairs for a general audience. His articles about computer security, nanotechnology, and drug marketing research have appeared in a variety of publications. Frazier holds a BS in geography from Appalachian State University. GPS Declassified describes in fascinating detail some of the navigation techniques that were employed prior to GPS, the Space Age events that paved the way to GPS, the development of GPS, and the assorted applications of GPS in today's society. It also tells the inside stories of the people who created GPS, including Roger Easton, the father of co-author Richard Easton. GPS Declassified is totally accessible to any reader with an interest in science, technology, history, and culture. The authors use a largely chronological approach. Ten chapters guide the reader from the ancient Greeks and 18th Century mariners to early Space Age pioneers and (as the subtitle suggests) modern smartphones. GPS Declassified examines the development of GPS from its secret, Cold War military roots to its emergence as a worldwide consumer industry. Drawing on previously unexplored documents, Richard D. Easton and Eric F. Frazier examine how military rivalries influenced the creation of GPS and shaped public perceptions about its origin. Since the United States first program to launch a satellite in the late 1950s, the nation has pursued dual paths into space one military and secret, the other scientific and public. Among the many commercial spinoffs this approach has produced, GPS arguably boasts the greatest impact on our daily lives. Told by a son of a navy insider, whose work helped lay the foundations for the system, and a science and technology journalist, the story chronicles the research and technological advances required for the development of GPS. Easton and Frazier note how the technology moved from the laboratory and the battlefield to the dashboard and the smartphone, and they raise the specter of how this technology and its surrounding industry affect public policy. Insights into how the system works and how it fits into a long history of advances in navigation tie into discussions of the myriad applications for GPS.

Jeff Testerman is a retired investigative reporter who spent his career at the St. Petersburg Times, where he was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize five times. He first knocked on the door of Bobby Thompson's run-down Tampa duplex in 2009. Following a brief but odd interaction with the Commander, he and a colleague spent seven months investigating the USNVA and eventually unmasked the scheme in a series of articles entitled "Under the Radar." His work on the project earned him the Investigative Reporters and Editors top award for public service. Daniel Freed is a senior producer and writer for CNBC's long-running white collar crime documentary series, American Greed. He covered John Cody's story for the show in 2014 and was the first to examine Cody's military records and his various CIA claims. His television and print work has been aired or published by PBS, Current TV, The New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. When Lt. Commander Bobby Thompson surfaced in Tampa in 1998, it was as if he had fallen from the sky, providing no hint of his past life. Eleven years later, St. Petersburg Times investigative reporter Jeff Testerman visited the rundown duplex Thompson used as his home and the epicenter of his 60,000-member charity, the U.S. Navy Veterans Association. But something was amiss. Thompson's charity's addresses were just maildrops, his members nonexistent and his past a black hole. Yet, somehow, the Commander had stood for photos with President George W. Bush, Sen. John McCain, and other political luminaries. The USNVA, it turned out, was a phony charity where Thompson used pricey telemarketers, savvy lawyers, and political allies to swindle tens of millions from well-meaning donors. After Testerman's story revealed that the nonprofit was a sham, the Commander went on the run. U.S. Marshals took up the hunt in 2011 and found themselves searching for an unnamed identity thief who they likened to a real-life Jason Bourne. When finally captured in 2012, Thompson was carrying multiple IDs and a key to a locker that held nearly $1 million in cash. But, who was he? Eventually, investigators discovered he was John Donald Cody, a Harvard Law School graduate and former U.S. Army intelligence officer who had been wanted since the 1980s on theft charges and for questioning in an espionage probe. As Cody's decades as a fugitive came to an end, he claimed his charity was run at the behest of the Central Intelligence Agency. After reporting on the story for CNBC's American Greed in 2014, Daniel Freed dug into Cody's backstory-uncovering new information about his intelligence background and the evolution of his con.
