He lives in Los Angeles.Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.January 4th - It Is Already Within YouSooner or later something seems to call us onto a particular path. You may remember this something as a signal calling in childhood when an urge out of nowhere, a fascination, a peculiar turn of events struck like an annunciation: This is what I must do, this is what I've got to have. This is who I am. --James HillmanAs you become more sophisticated, you often lose touch with these signals from your primal core. They can be buried beneath all of the other subjects you have studied. Your power and future can depend on reconnecting with this core and returning to your origins. You must dig for signs of such inclinations in your earliest years. Look for its traces in visceral reactions to something simple; a desire to repeat an activity that you never tired of; a subject that stimulated an unusual degree of curiosity; feelings of power attached to particular actions. It is already there within you. You have nothing to create; you merely need to dig and refine what has been buried inside of you all along. If you reconnect with this core at any age, some element of that primitive attraction will spark back to life, indicating a path that can ultimately become your Life's Task.Daily Law: Ask someone who recalls your childhood what they remember about your interests. Get reacquainted with those early passions. (Mastery, I: Discover Your Calling-The Life's Task)April 30th - Never Appear Too PerfectIt takes great talent and skill to conceal one's talent and skill. --François De La RochefoucauldSir Walter Raleigh was one of the most brilliant men at the court of Queen Elizabeth of England. He had skills as a scientist, wrote poetry still recognized as among the most beautiful writing of the time, was a proven leader of men, an enterprising entrepreneur, a great sea captain, and on top of all this was a handsome, dashing courtier charmed his way into becoming one of the queen's favorites. Wherever he went, however, people blocked his path. Eventually he suffered a terrific fall from grace, leading even to prison and finally the executioner's axe. Raleigh could not understand the stubborn opposition he faced from the other courtiers. He did not see that he had not only made no attempt to disguise the degree of his skills and qualities, but he had imposed them on one and all, making a show of his versatility, thinking it impressed people and won hi.

hardcover. Condition: New. "Product DescriptionFrom the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The 48 Laws of Power comes the definitive new book on decoding the behavior of the people around youRobert Greene is a master guide for millions of readers, distilling ancient wisdom and philosophy into essential texts for seekers of power, understanding and mastery. Now he turns to the most important subject of all - understanding people's drives and motivations, even when they are unconscious of them themselves. We are social animals. Our very lives depend on our relationships with people. Knowing why people do what they do is the most important tool we can possess, without which our other talents can only take us so far. Drawing from the ideas and examples of Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr, and many others, Greene teaches us how to detach ourselves from our own emotions and master self-control, how to develop the empathy that leads to insight, how to look behind people's masks, and how to resist conformity to develop your singular sense of purpose. Whether at work, in relationships, or in shaping the world around you, The Laws of Human Nature offers brilliant tactics for success, self-improvement, and self-defense.ReviewPraise for The Laws of Human Nature:"The writing is engaging and the ideas are fascinating we could all use the insights Greene provides. a hopeful book that advocates freedom and creativity." -- Quartz"The lessons have profound implications. There's a chapter on reading body language that is absolutely profound; each "law" has stunningly vivid descriptions of an historical figure." -- Inc."The Laws of Human Nature provides some first-rate comprehensive and in-depth information about how to deal with our fellow human beings effectively. Greene's intense curiosity about the inner workings of humanity is contagious, as he invites us to join him as fellow sleuths on his investigation of why people, including ourselves, do what we do. He rightly (and frequently) reminds us that in order to understand others, we must first and foremost understand what makes ourselves tick." -- New York Journal of Books"In this detailed and expansive guide, Greene (Mastery) seeks to transform the reader into a 'calmer and more strategic observer,' immune to 'emotional drama.' Those are lofty promises, but even skeptics will become believers after diving into Greene's well-organized text. Overcoming the "law of irrationality," for instance, leads to the ability to "open your mind to what is really happening, as opposed to what you are feeling." Greene's thoughtful examination of self and society will, for the committed reader, deliver a refreshing and revitalizing perspective." -- Publishers WeeklyPraise for Robert Greene:"Greene's specialty is analyzing the lives and philosophies of historical figures like Sun Tzu and Napoleon, and extracting from them tips on how to manipulate people and situations--a cutthroat worldview that has earned him a devoted following among a like-minded readership of rappers, drug dealers and corporate executives." -The New York Times"Compelling." -Forbes"Illuminating."-The GuardianPraise for The 48 Laws of Power:"Machiavelli has a new rival. And Sun Tzu had better watch his back. Greene . . . has put together a checklist of ambitious behavior. Just reading the table of contents is enough to stir a little corner-office lust."-New York magazine"Beguiling . . . literate . . . fascinating. A wry primer for people who desperately want to be on top."-People"An heir to Machiavelli's Prince . . . gentler souls will find this book frightening, those whose moral compass is oriented solely to power will have a perfect vade mecum." -Publishers Weekly"Satisfyingly dense and . . . literary, with fantastic examples of genius power-game players. It's The Rules meets In Pursuit of Wow! with a degree in comparative literature."-AllureAbout the AuthorRobert Greene, the #1 New York Times bes".

hardcover. Condition: New. First Edition. Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control - from the author of The Laws of Human Nature. In the book that People magazine proclaimed "beguiling" and "fascinating," Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), others teach the value of confidence ("Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness"), and many recommend absolute self-preservation ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.

Map
No binding. 'SCOTLAND'S EARLIEST ROAD MAP'. 470 x 550 mm., in early outline colour, printed on thick paper with fold along the left side to facilitate inclusion in the Berry atlas, in good condition. 'SCOTLAND'S EARLIEST ROAD MAP' (Fleet, Wilkes and Withers). The first state bore the imprint of both Robert Greene and William Berry. The map was first advertised in the Term Catalogue in 1679. This is the second state bearing that of Greene only. According to Moir it was issued sometime before 1689 when it was advertised by his eldest sister Elizabeth. This is the EARLIEST MAP OF SCOTLAND AS A WHOLE TO SHOW THE ROADS. It was engraved by Francis Lamb. Greene was a map seller, as opposed to a maker such as Berry, and could also supply a printing press to the relationship. The cartouche describes Greene's shop as a place "Where you may have all sorts of Mapps." This second state dates from before his death which was recorded 12 February 1688. As he was a widower the business was left to his son Nathan. Being underage the business was left in the care of his eldest sister Elizabeth. Provenance: from a William Berry atlas; private English collection since c.1975. Fleet, Wilkes and Withers (2011) p. 204; Moir (1973) vol. 1, p.173; Arber (1903-06) vol. I p. 359 & Vol. II p. 281; Tyacke (1978) p. 117.
