Rapidly converging algorithms are presented in these notes, including convergence analysis in terms of circular regions, and in complex arithmetic. Parallel circular iterations, where the approximations to the zeros have the form of circular regions containing these zeros, are efficient because they also provide error estimates. There are at present no book publications on this topic and one of the aims of this book is to collect most of the algorithms produced in the last 15 years. To decrease the high computational cost of interval methods, several effective iterative processes for the simultaneous inclusion of polynomial zeros which combine the efficiency of ordinary floating-point arithmetic with the accuracy control that may be obtained by the interval methods, are set down, and their computational efficiency is described. On the one hand there are theso-called 'process algebras' or 'abstract programming languages' with Milner's Calculus of Communicating Systems (CCS) and the theoretical version of Hoare's Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) as main representatives. On the other hand there are machine models, i.e. the classical finite state automata (transition systems), for which, however, more discriminating notions of equivalence than equality of languages are used; and secondly, there are differently powerful types of Petri nets, namely safe and general (place/transition) nets respectively, and predicate/transition nets. Within a uniform framework the syntax and the operational semantics of CCS and TCSP are explained. We consider both, Milner's well-known interleaving semantics, which is based on infinite transition systems, as well as the new distributed semantics introduced by Degano et al., which is based on infinite safe nets. The main part of this work contains three syntax-driven constructions of transition systems, safe nets, and predicate/transition nets respectively. Each of them is accompanied by a proof of consistency. Due to intrinsic limits, which are also investigated here, neither for transition systems and finite nets, nor for general nets does a finite consistent representation of all CCS and TCSP programs exist. However sublanguages which allow finite representations are discerned. These two subjects have been treated together because of the close links between sedimen tology as an academic dicipline, petroleum geology, which is the application of sedimentology, and a number of other aspects of petroleum exploration and production. The oil industry ist by far the most important employer of sedimentologists and the lively interaction that takes place between the academic community and the research laboratories and exploration departments of the oil industry has been very fruitful for both parties. Our knowledge of sedimentary basins now depends to a very large extent on data obtained by commercial petroleum exploration. Studies of actual rocks in outcrops, particularly if they are extensive, will always be important for sedimentologists, but subsurface data like seismic sections and well logs provide us with in much information on the three-dimensional distribution of facies that we could not otherwise obtain. Subsurface techniques are certainly important for pe troleum geologists, but also other sedimentologists should be able to use subsurface data. It is therefore concerned with the identification of cell types and histological patterns as seen by conventional light micro scopy. In general, time-honoured terms have been retained. Syn onyms are listed only if they have been widely used or if they are con sidered to be important for understanding the disease process. In such cases, the preferred term is given first, followed by the synonym in parentheses. The individuality of a tumour manifests itself principally in its histological appearance and the extent of spread at the time of diag nosis. The histological classification of a tumour de pends on two main parameters, typing and grading, and a number of additional parameters which may apply to selected examples. Histological Typing This divides tumours of a given organ into different types according to their direction of differentiation. Although this may frequently in dicate the underlying histogenesis of the tumour, it may be difficult or impossible to identify the cell of origin.
