As this book shows, these almost ideal reagents are easy to prepare with high specificity under mild conditions and yet react quite readily with a great variety of substrates. Many compounds can be metallated directly at positions which would otherwise be difficult to substitute. Functional groups and heteroatoms already present in a molecule direct metallation to sites in their vicinity. The rules which govern polar organometallic chemistry often are not dominated by the usual n-delocalization and inductive effects; dipolar interactions, chelation, polarization, etc. often can be much more important. This affords novel synthetic opportunities. A good example is the development of a basically new type of aromatic substitution chemistry not based on positively charged intermediates. This gives me the opportunity of adding a few explanations. I have not struggled to include the very latest, tentative results. I have, instead, concentrated on presenting cosmological ideas to interested non experts. They often encounter considerable difficulties when attempts are made to explain even long-established results in this field, so the aim of this book is to provide them with help. Naturally, I have also tried to include modern findings. To help with the explanation I have made use of the fictitious inhabi tants of Flatland, occasional historical digressions, and the dreams of Herr Meyer. Incidentally, I chose this name, which is very common in German speaking countries, to suggest an average citizen, just like the man next door. From time eternal, man has tried to explain the numerous configurations and lines of the hand in order to reveal the true character of a person and to display his life. The importance of the symbolism of the hand is reflected in its role in the cultural life of the old world. Therefore, it is not astanishing that the first book about the hand, by Johannes Hartlieb, was devoted to Chiromancy, and that it was so successful that it went through four editions since the second half of the fifteenth century. When Wilhelm Röntgen in 1895 asked his wife to lay her hand on a photographic plate covered with black paper and exposed it to the radiation he had just discovered, it marked the beginning of radiology. Today the study of the hand concerns only 2%-4% of the activity of radiology. It nevertheless reveals an amazing quantity and variety of pathology. As in the former case, the intention is to present an extensive set of nonlinear programming problems that were used by other authors in the past to develop, test or compare optimization algorithms. There is no distinction between an 'easy' or 'difficult' test problem, since any related classification must depend on the underlying algorithm and test design. For instance, a nonlinear least squares problem may be solved easily by a special purpose code within a few iterations, but the same problem can be unsolvable for a general nonlinear programming code due to ill-conditioning. Thus one should consider both collections as a possible offer to choose some suitable problems for a specific test frame. One difference between the new collection and the former one pub lished by Hock and Schittkowski [2], is the attempt to present some more realistic or 'real world' problems. Moreover a couple of non linear least squares test problems were collected which can be used e. g. to test data fitting algorithms. These three forms of cancer were chosen as they are extremely rare in Europe but some of the most frequently found forms in China. Almost half of the roughly 260000 cases of primary liver cancer occurring annually worldwide are Chinese; of the roughly 300000 esophagus cancers occurring annually, more than half are Chinese; nasopharyngeal cancer is roughly 100 times more frequent among Chinese people than in Caucasians. Under these circumstances, it is not surprising that the Chinese guest speakers of the Heidelberg symposium - selected specialists in the three subsections of oncolo gy mentioned - were able to report about extensive experiences with patient popu lations of a size hardly imaginable in Europe. The great clinical experience of the Chinese guests was supplemented by special contributions of European experts. Thus, this volume permits a topical survey of the state of the art in these three can cers, with subsections of epidemiology, pathology, and clinical treatment. In 1982, the most important con tributions were published in the series Anaesthesiology and Inten sive Care Medicine.
