Hardcover. Condition: New/Sealed in Publisher's Wrap. pictorial boards w/ black, white & orange printing. 255 pgs w/ color & bw illustrations. "Gustav Klutsis and Valentina Kulagina: Photography and Montage After Constructivism is an in-depth study of the work of Gustav Klutsis, the pioneer of photomontage in the Soviet Union and a central figure in the transition from the formalism of the early Soviet avant-garde to the increasingly state-sponsored art production of the 1930s. Also presented is the work of Klutsis's wife and colleague, Valentina Kulagina, an innovative poster, book, and exhibition designer, who participated in such seminal exhibitions as the 1928 Pressa exhibition in Cologne. Photography and Montage After Constructivism includes the artists' important public works - street displays, posters, and book and magazine desigs - as well as intimate family portraits and experimental photographs and photomontages. Drawing from her research at Russian archives and on previously unavailable information contained in the artists' letters and diaries - many translated here for the first time - art historian Margarita Tupitsyn offers new insights on the artists and the political and cultural climate in which they were working."--Jacket.

Add to basketFirst edition. 20.5 cm x 20.5 cm. 310 pages with many illustrations. Softcover. Front cover photograph - 'Blue Cinema in the Woods' 2006 Kenji Yanobe. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. An exhibtion catalogue from 2008 with contents including: Director's Foreword / 'terminally neurotic delicacy' Makoto Aida / 'this is Japan' Naoki Kajtani / 'a flower is mystic mountain' Yukio Kakagawa / 'the phantom state' Risaku Suzuki / 'a time machine to the end of the future' Kenji Yanobe / etc. Also includes artists' biographies. Japanese contemporary artists have mined some distinctive territory in the past decade or two--from the Superflat movement, to the referencing of traditional art objects like scrolls or contemporary pop phenomena like manga. Within these conventions, certain themes continually surface--nature in conflict with the manmade world, costuming and the search for personal identity and the child as cultural icon. Heavy Light identifies these themes as they are evidenced in recent Japanese photo-based art, and examines how they are reshaping Japanese tradition. This volume is published in conjunction with the major Spring 2008 exhibition at New York's International Center of Photography, which includes a diverse selection of artists: Makoto Aida, Naoya Hatakeyama, Naoki Kajitani, Hiroh Kikai, Midori Komatsubara, Yukio Nakagawa, Asako Narahashi, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Tomoko Sawada, Risaku Suzuki, Miwa Yanagi, Kenji Yanobe and Masayuki Yoshinaga. Also featured in this volume are extensive interviews with the artists, offering accounts of their working methods and their thoughts on the influence of contemporary art on Japanese culture during the last several decades of rapid change. In addition, art historian Linda Nochlin and writer Akiko Otake provide invaluable essays. Sprache: english.

Hardcover. Illustrated Ivory cloth covers. 299 pages; chiefly illustrations. The photographs of Ralph Eugene Meatyard defy convention: they have been called visionary, surrealistic, and meditative. Whatever the label, these evocative images of friends and family and the natural world around his home illustrate a delicate psychology of human interaction. Meatyard was trained as an optician, a profession that he maintained all his life in Lexington, Kentucky; he bought a camera in 1950 for the sole purpose of photographing his first-born son. But shortly thereafter, he joined the Lexington Camera Club and developed a friendship with his photography teacher Van Deren Coke, as well as a circle of local writers and photographers, including Guy Davenport, Thomas Merton, Wendell Berry, Jonathan Williams, and Minor White. Family and friends freely participated in Meatyard's staged and mysterious images, which often involve masks and abandoned spaces, and obliquely reference social, political, and cultural issues. A key subject in Meatyard's work is the natural environment, which is featured in his Light on Water series, in which long exposures seem to create calligraphic texts, and his No-Focus series, in which he deliberately photographed stems and twigs out of focus. In one of his last series titled Motion-Sound, the pictures were made by moving the camera gently, creating multiple exposures of the woodland scenes that suggest abstract sound patterns. The book accompanies an exhibition organized by ICP Assistant Curator Cynthia Young with acclaimed writer and Meatyard friend, Guy Davenport, who also wrote the text. Also included are the exhibition history, chronology, and bibliography. Contents as follows: Ralph Eugene Meatyard / Guy Davenport -- Interview with Guy Davenport / Cynthia Young -- My aims / Ralph Eugene Meatyard -- Early work -- Georgetown Street -- Sculptures -- No-focus -- Abstractions -- Light on water -- Zen twigs -- Romances -- Motion-sound -- Portraits -- The family album of Lucybelle Crater -- Self-portraits. VG: Exlibrary book. Some wear/stains to the covers. Stamp on front free end page. Stamp on back free end page, sticker and due date card on back pasted end page. Stamp on top text block.
