Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. illustrated with twelve gravures by zhenya Gay (illustrator). In original slipcase (very-good-minus), in marbled green to match the boards. NO dust jacket, as issued. This is the original text as it appeared in The London Magazine of September and October, 1821 -- not as revised and rewritten in 1856. Laid in is the appropriate issue "1p" of the Heritage Club monthly newsletter "Sandglass," as well as an invoice for $3.90 (to include 25 cents "Wrapping & Carrying Charge") for this book, which appears to have gone unpaid. One imagines that the use of opium (here in the form of laudanum) is -- certainly in the early stages -- enjoyable, else why start? Yet Zhenya Gay's somber charcoal illustrations are -- start to finish -- hellish and harrowing. Never a smile, never a dream of bright dragons. 77 pp. Reduced from $15.

Hardcover. Royal octavo, [25cm/10inches], full gilt-embossed pictorial cloth, sans dust jacket, -as published,- w/ slipcase, pp. xx, 346. Illustrated with halftone chiaroscuro drawings, &tc. Please feel free to ask for particulars and/or additional photographs. . Hans Alexander Mueller was the author of Woodcuts & Wood Engravings: How I Make Them, (1939). Though now largely forgotten as a technique, chiaroscuro, of which Mueller was an undisputed master was widely used in illustrations throughout the Nineteenth Century, until replaced by offset and color lithography printing technology. William McFee immigrated to the United States in 1911 and wrote books, afterwards going to sea in ships of the United Fruit Company. During World War I he served in the Royal Navy as engineer in various transport ships. After the war, McFee returned to the United States to live in Roxbury, Connecticut. He was with the United Fruit Company, as chief engineer until 1924 when he turned definitively to writing. In addition to books, he also wrote reviews for The New York Sun and The New York Times. One of his reviews was for Save Me the Waltz by Zelda Fitzgerald, in which he said, "In this book, with all its crudity of conception, its ruthless purloinings of technical tricks and its pathetic striving after philosophic profundity, there is the promise of a new and vigorous personality in fiction." richard Henry Dana is, of course, one of the patron saints of Southern California In exceptionally good condition.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. "The Sir Roger De Coverley Papers" were originally written by Joseph Addison, Richard Steele, and Eustace Budgell for "The Spectator" in London 1711 - 1712. This Heritage Press reprint edition, subsequent to the Limited Editions Club issue, published in New York in 1945, includes the Prefatory Notes by William Makepeace Thackeray, and the color illustrations of Gordon Ross. It's a very handsome book , and the illustrations help to illuminate the 18th century humor found in each of the pieces which entail the mildly satiric stories of the fictional Sir Roger De Coverley. Collected together they present an episodic romp through the landed gentry of the British 18th century. I'm sure they were much appreciated then, but possibly even more so collected together in this modern format, with such amusingly handsome illustrations, and, of course, we can all enjoy the perceptive words of Thackeray to lead it all. ******************************************* TITLE : The Sir Roger de Coverley Papers - from "The Spectator", London : 1711 - 1712 / AUTHORS : Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719), Richard Steele (1672 - 1729), Eustace Budgell (1686 - 1737) / PREFACE : W.
