Softbound. Condition: Very Good. Octavo, paper covers, xii, 195 pp., b/w photos, notes, works consulted and cited, index On July 18, 1994, the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA), which housed major Argentine Jewish organizations and served as a storehouse of Hebrew, Yiddish, and Argentine Jewish documents and literature, was bombed by terrorists. Although over 80 people were killed and the bomb leveled a city block in downtown Buenos Aires, the perpetrators were never found.Taking the bombing as her starting point, Edna Aizenberg crafts an unusual and powerful study of two canonical Argentine writers, Jorge Luis Borges and Alberto Gerchunoff. Examining in particular the literary and cultural reverberations in other authors of Gerchunoff's 1910 story collection, The Jewish Gauchos and Borges' Judaically inspired work, Aizenberg delves into the primary issues of Argentine and Latin American Jewish cultural production: Holocaust writing, resistance to dictatorship, pluralism and identity, and the position of the writer-scholar as a direct and vital participant in the transformation of culture and society. Situating Latin American Jewish literature within the multiple contexts of the Holocaust, postmodernism, and postcolonialism, Aizenberg argues that a literature celebrating pastiche, hybridity, and carnivalization is more democratic than literature that does not. She makes a brave case for the power of the pen in a contemporary world dominated by the power of the sword.TABLE OF CONTENTSI. Gauchos 1. Parricide on the Pampa: Slaying Gerchunoff and His Jewish Gauchos 2. Sephardim and Neo-Sephardim in Latin American Literature 3. On Translating Gerchunoff II. Golems 4. Hardbound. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Large square quarto in dust jacket, color frontispiece (detail from Kitaj's 'The Painter (Cross and Chimney)'), x, 163 pp., color plates throughout, a few b/w photos, notes, index "From drawing to paintings to installations, visual art in the 20th-century US has been marked by an explosion of productivity by Jews. Their work reflects profound historical and cultural issues, such as what it means to be a Jewish artist in the western tradition of Christian art, and what it means, as Jews, to be painters of the specifically American experience. Ori Soltes focuses primarily on the work of 20th-century Jewish painters to explore themes ranging from the trials of immigration, depictions of urban life and politics, renderings of the Holocaust, and the reconstitution of Judaism in recent years by feminist painters and Soviet emigrée artists. The astonishing array of work represented in this book sometimes displays overtly Jewish themes and symbols; other paintings are included for their importance in the general development of 20th-century painting. Balancing individual biographies of painters, stylistic analysis, and thematic interpretations, Soltes offers a remarkable survey of 20th-century American Jewish painting.Despite the diverse range of images, themes, a common thread among most of these paintings is the concept of tikkun olamof repairing or fixing the world. Most of the artists represented here demonstrate an interest in the social, as well as the aesthetic, import of their work. We see this concern for social betterment in the urban paintings of the Soyer brothers, in the "political" paintings of Ben Shahn, in the Holocaust-inflected works of numerous artists, and in the more contemporary work of Joyce Ellen Weinstein decrying violence and racism. Such works of despair and repair are balanced by dozens of paintings of celebration, joyous experiments in how to convey Jewishness and Judaism on canvas into the 21st century. Concise, elegant, and sophisticated, Fixing the World is a teaching tool, a pleasure to read, and a feast for the eyes." from UPNE web copy. The book is especially helpful in its treatment of recent Jewish art.

"These memoirs of young Zionist women who emigrated to Palestine at the turn of the century offer an intimate look at life on a veritable frontier. Memoirists discuss tensions in communal living and disclose hardships of working and raising families in isolated agricultural colonies. Nonetheless, their narratives show them to be keenly motivated by the vision of creating a Jewish homeland, an egalitarian society that would foster and celebrate individual growth, sustain family life, and provide a secure future for all. First published in1932 - and long out of print [and soon to be op again] - this new, fully annotated edition includes biographies of the books original contributors, photographs, glossaries of terms and places, and a map of pre-state Israeli society. The editors' new introductory essays establish the historical, literary, and psychological context for the memoirs; discuss women in Zionist history; and focus on the work and family issues vexing early pioneers." from Cover copy.
