About this Item: G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1955. First edition. Signed first printing of the autobiography of the Nepali-Indian Sherpa mountaineer who participated in and made possible the first ever ascent of Mount Everest. Norgay first became involved in the British expeditions to explore Everest in 1935, when he was only 20 years old. He achieved the summit of Everest with Edmund Hillary nearly two decades later, in 1953. Full of detail about Norgay's Tibetan culture, it is an especially valuable document for providing details outside of the experiences and priorities of the British accounts. The book captures both Norgay's ebullient spirit and his perceptive wisdom: "What I can teach is not from books, to be sure, but from what I have learned in living my own life: from many men, many lands, many mountains - and, most of all, from Everest." 8.5'' x 5.75''. Original blue gilt-stamped cloth, gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($4.50) color pictorial dust jacket with cover art by Dwight Shepler. Blue cartographic endpapers. Illustrated with photographic frontispiece and 18 pages of black-and-white photographic images. xvi, 294 pages. Signed and dated (20/5/71) by Norgay on half title. Bookplate on verso of front endpaper. Small newspaper clipping with contemporary review tipped onto rear fly leaf. Some marginal notes and underlined sections in pencil by early owners, including a reference list of pages with quotes notable to the reader on final blanks. Postcard momento of the 1971 International Himalayan Expedition, signed by the participants, laid in. Jacket with a few faint spots of small staining, mostly on verso, and some rubbing and toning around edges. Very good plus in very good jacket. Seller Inventory # 39542
