About this Item: 1835, 1835. Single sheet vellum, matted and framed (13 x 11 inches; framed size: 19 x 16 4/8 inches). AN EXQUISITE ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR ON VELLUM of a bouquet of Roses of Sharon, signed and dated in pencil lower left 'Redoute 1835'. While the first quarter of the nineteenth century was dominated by his work on Les Liliacées and Les Roses, Redouté also produced a selection of other original works not necessarily destined for re-creation in published form. Some of these watercolors were additional studies from the Empress Joséphine's gardens at Malmaison, as is most probably the case with Redouté's paintings of the Calomeria Amaranthoïdes, Metrosyderos lophanta, and Hibiscus here illustrated. These exhibit the same virtuosity as his studies for Les Liliacées and Les Roses, showing the same hallmarks of a white vellum background and bluegreen leaves that Redouté so favored. Redoute was first brought to Royal patronage by Marie-Antoinette in 1788 when she appointed him Dessinatteur du Cabinet de la Reine and granted him access to the Petit Trianon. From then until the end of his long life Redoute weathered the political storms of France with remarkable ease "he survived the difficult years of the Revolution and the Restoration and found approval with all the rulers who changed in quick succession" (Hinz). However it was ten years later that his most creative period began under the patronage of the Empress Josephine when she acquired the Malmaison Chateau in Rueil, south of Paris: "she was passionately interested in botany and horticulture, and the design and layout of the Malmaison chateau garden became her personal concern. She went to great efforts to collect beautiful and rare plants from all over the world and to cultivate them in her gardens " (Hinz). Single sheet of vellum, float-mounted and framed (18 4/8 x 13 4/8 inches; framed size 25 4/8 x 20 inches). A SUPERB ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR OF THE HILL GLORY BOWER FLOWER, or Clerodendrum viscosum, now Clerodendrum infortunatum, with details of the parts of the flower, pistol and seed beneath the main image in graphite, and signed by the artist "peint par P.J. Redoute" lower left. Provenance: with the gallery label of Jean-Pierre Selz Gallery, New York, June 4, 1979; with Sotheby's, New York, 19th June, 2015, lot 81 Published as plate 25 in volume one of Redoute and Ventenat's "Jardin de la Malmaison", 1803, "the first great opus of Redoute . among the most important monuments of botanical illustration ever to be published" (Stafleu in Hunt/Redouteana). The Hill Glory Bower, a member of the Verbena family, is native to tropical regions of Asia including India, Myanmar, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, the Andaman Islands, and Sri Lanka. The leaves have medicinal use in relieving fever and bowel troubles, both leaves and flowers are apparently used to cure scorpion sting. "Jardin de la Malmaison" was sponsored by the Empress Josephine, and its plates depict specimens from her gardens, which Ventenat praised in his dedication as a conjunction of "the rarest plants of the French soil [and] the sweetest souvenir of the conquests of your illustrious consort." While the first quarter of the nineteenth century was dominated by his work on Les Liliacées and Les Roses, Redouté also produced a selection of other original works not necessarily destined for re-creation in published form. Some of these watercolors were additional studies from the Empress Joséphine's gardens at Malmaison. Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie Antoinette to Josephine's successor, the Empress Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in this turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty books on natural history and archaeology. Seller Inventory # 72wcd178

About this Item: London: Witherby and Co, under the auspices of the New York Zoological Society, 1918-1922, 1922. Watercolour on board (13 4/8 x 19 inches) mounted more recently on thicker board. Fine original watercolour drawing of a pair of Germain Peacock Pheasants, signed "Louis Agassiz Fuertes. 1912" lower left. Louis Agassiz Fuertes was the most widely acclaimed American ornithological artist of his time. Born in Ithaca, New York, Fuertes began drawing birds at an early age, inspired by Audubon's "Birds of America." By the time he was seventeen, his illustrations had qualified him as an associate member of the American Ornithologists' Union. Fuertes quickly became associated with leading ornithological scientists and artists, and he received professional commissions while still an undergraduate at Cornell. Fuertes went on to produce a vast body of work for an extremely broad range of projects. His paintings and drawings invariably convey the artist's extremely careful study of his subjects' form and behavior, and his diligence, precision and skill in draftsmanship produced some of the most animated and engaging bird illustrations of the twentieth century. Fuertes was determined to study and draw birds as they behaved in their natural habitats, unlike his predecessors, including Audubon, who took the easier route of drawing from stuffed specimens. As a result of this scrupulous and sensitive study of living birds, his works are characterized by a much greater accuracy and sense of vitality. Perhaps more than any of the other great bird artists, Fuertes' birds are always full of life. In the book "A Celebration of Birds: The Life and Art of Louis Agassiz Fuertes," the noted specialist on ornithological art Roger Tory Peterson notes that even today "most bird painters are still influenced directly or indirectly by Fuertes." Fuertes traveled widely to broaden his knowledge of birds and their habitats. In 1899, for example, he accompanied the Harriman Expedition to Alaska, a group that traveled up the coast as far as Plover Bay in Siberia. Sponsored by the railroad and mining magnate Edward Harriman, the elaborately outfitted expedition included well-know scientists such as John Burroughs and John Muir, landscape artists Frederick Dellenbaugh and Robert Swain Gifford, and photographer Edward Curtis. By that time, Fuertes was widely acclaimed himself, his illustrations having been disseminated in a number of publications. Yet his original watercolors, the most compelling testaments to the unparalleled abilities of this great bird artist, are quite rare. Seller Inventory # 72wcd139

About this Item: Paris: 1847., 1847. TRAVIES, Edouard (1809-1865). Original Painting of a White-sided Hillstar Hummingbird. Paris: 1846. Single sheet, wove paper (13 x 9 inches), EXQUISITE PAINTING OF A WHITE-SIDED HILLSTAR HUMMINGBIRD, Oreotrochilus leucopleurus, perched on a sprig of the pink flowering Centrodenia rosea, original watercolour and gouache over graphite, heightened with gum arabic, inscribed in ink beneath the image "Centradenia rosea Troch. Leucopleurus (Chili)" [possibly in Edouard Travies' hand], and signed by the artist lower left "Edouard Travies pinxit. 1847. No. 20". A superb painting of the White-sided Hillstar hummingbird, the southernmost species of Hillstar, being found in grassland and scrub in far southern Bolivia, Chile and western Argentina. Edouard Travies (1809-1865), was the great illustrator of Hummingbirds included in his iconicLes Oiseaux Les Plus Remarkables Par Leurs Formes et Leurs Couleurs. Scenes variees de leurs moeurs & de leurs Habitudes, Paris: Ledot aine (or Berrieux) and London: E. Gambert & Co. (or Victor Delarue), ca. 1857. It is possible that this watercolour was intended for engraving for an edition of M.A.Richard's Oeuvres Completes de Buffon, Paris 1825-1828, 1834, 1838, 1845, 1848, and ca 1848-1850. Travies' artistry represents a pinnacle in French ornithological illustration. Natural history, as a descriptive pursuit bent on identifying new species, demanded detailed illustrations. The minute precision of Traviès' work places him with the best of France's scientific artists. Traviès was born in Doullens, in the Somme district of France, in March 1809, the younger brother of the caricaturist Charles Joseph Traviès de Villier (1804-1859). Throughout his career he concentrated on natural history subjects, both in watercolor (he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1831 and 1866) and lithography. Unlike a number of his contemporaries, he was an artist both with the brush and on stone. Traviès' original watercolors were reproduced as both engravings and lithographs, which are considered among the best portraits of birds ever painted. The artist rendered the backgrounds fully, incorporating foliage, flowers, butterflies, as well as the birds themselves, all with considerable charm. Seller Inventory # 72wcd186

About this Item: 1963. Rare original watercolor painting by American writer and artist Henry Miller. The painting depicts three anthropomorphic figures, one with a horse-shaped head beneath a sky dotted with one star. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner of the image, "Henry Miller 8/63." In fine condition. Matted and framed, the entire piece measures 21 inches by 18.5 inches. In addition to his contributions to literature, American writer and artist Henry Miller produced a significant body of watercolor paintings and published several books on the field. Unlike writing, which Miller considered work, he regarded painting as a means to recharge and relax, and even used his watercolors to barter for household supplies and other services. Many of Miller's paintings feature horses and horse-like figures reminiscent of the Etruscan ceramic paintings he admired at the Louvre during his time living and working in Paris. About this Item: [no publisher], [Portland?]. Unbound. Condition: Very Good. [Late 1960s]. Single-sheet white cardstock measuring 14"x14", with original black painted design covering a 12"x12" area, signed on the back in pencil by Judi Biandel. Appears to an original artist's mockup for the 1960s Portland rock band The New Tweedy Bros., with a nearly-identical image of the four band members being used for posters and later included in the 2017 re-issue pf the band's only LP, though the colors are inverted. It could possibly have been a mock-up for an LP that never materialized to be released by Dot Records, who released a 7" for the band whose LP eventually came out on Ridon. It is the size of an LP sleeve, the colors appear inverted from other examples found on band flyers, but the lettering is not inverted. Very Good with masking tape applied along rear edges, two small areas of tape damage to rear. A legendary psychedelic-pop band based in Portland, Oregon who inspired the Grateful Dead. Their original self-titled LP on Ridon is one of the most collectable and hard to find albums of the era. Contemporary original artwork for the band is very uncommon. Seller Inventory # 140940286
