Item Description: [Guatemala, and various locations in Central America. 1800-1910]., 1910. More than 2000 printed items. With much additional later printed material. Various sizes, with many folios, broadsides, and octavo pamphlets. A few documents soiled or lightly dampstained, with scattered wear and chipping. Some age toning and foxing, scattered minor worming. Many items housed in individual plastic sleeves or paper folders. Overall, very good. A remarkable collection of Central American material, with over 2000 imprints from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the items were printed in various locales in Guatemala, with a scattering of imprints from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica. The imprints included span the breadth of the 19th century and on into the 20th. Approximately seventy-five percent of these date from the 1820s to the 1880s. This rich collection holds a tremendous amount of research potential in a number of areas. It includes a significant number of ephemeral broadsides and other political material, documenting the turbulent political scene in Guatemala from independence to the early 20th century. Guatemala and the rest of Central America - El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica - declared independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. This federation lasted until 1840, when civil war tore the region into separate states. From there, a series of presidencies and lengthy dictatorships dominated the political landscape, all documented in the material of the present collection. One important broadside from 1854 proclaims President Rafael Carrera (1814-65) to be the supreme and perpetual leader of Guatemala for life, a position he held from 1851 until his death in 1865. There are extensive runs of select items, such as the MENSAJE DE PRESIDENTE and the rebuttal CONTESTACIONS DE L'ASSEMBLE, which run from the 1850s through the early 1900s (about 100 items). There is also a series of DISCURSOS commemorating Central American independence dating to roughly the same time frame (about forty items). Several runs of official periodicals are also included here, among them the BOLETIN OFICIAL (about sixty issues from the 1830s); and the BOLETIN DE NOTICIAS (seventeen issues from the 1870s), which documents the last days of the government of Vicente Cerna Sandoval. In the later material there is a significant number of political broadsides and proclamas from the presidency of dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera, many bearing a woodcut portrait of the president. Cabrera (1857-1924) was in office from 1898 to 1920, suppressing several revolts against his rule. Additionally, there are periodicals, government publications, and numerous pamphlets on a wide variety of subjects. The 1870s saw a flurry of modernization in Guatemala, and this collection mirrors that activity, with more imprints (approximately 600) from that decade than any other. A handful of items from the mid- to late-19th century concern the lottery, the circus, bullfights, and the theatre in Guatemala. There is also a discrete cache of medical- related material, covering cholera outbreaks, whooping cough, and similar topics. Another segment covers the development of the railroad and the telegraph in Guatemala and Central America. There are also pamphlets on subjects such as religion, the military, economics, laws, and more. An impressive and extensive collection, documenting hundreds of years of Guatemalan history. This collection was built over many years by a scholar of the region, and clearly could not be equaled today. Bookseller Inventory # WRCAM 46256

Item Description: Cf. Borba de Moraes, p. 681; Bosch I, 411; Engelmann I, p. 202; Howgego, 1800-1850, P31; Sabin 63629. Splendid and unique set of original drawings by Eduard Friedrich Poeppig (1798-1868), made for his celebrated account of his expedition to Peru, Chile, the Andes and the Amazon basin. The collection includes 26 landscapes and outdoor scenes and 1 portrait, of which 9 were actually lithographed and published in Poeppig's narrative Reise in Chile, Peru, und auf dem Amazonstrom (Leipzig, 1835-36). The others do not appear in the book, so that they add even more to our knowledge, and include landscapes of Cuba and North America. Most of the accurate and lively drawings (in pencil, pen and ink and wash) are in a finished state: ready for translation by the lithographer or engraver with the title and Poeppig's name at the foot.Poeppig began in Cuba in 1825 but worked mostly in South America, making geographical, botanical and zoological studies, describing over 4,000 types of plants, investigating Incan ruins, and travelling the length of the Amazon River by raft and canoe. He returned to Germany in 1832. "The account of his expedition and the botanical surveys he published are comparable to the work of Humboldt" (Borba de Moraes). The drawings overall in very good condition. The binding has its posterior inner hinge restored, but is otherwise also very good. Bookseller Inventory # F12DMFDPVTEN

Item Description: Howgego, to 1800, T19; Palau 328892; not in Atabey; Blackmer. First edition of a "history of the kings of Persia compiled from the Persian histories of Mir Khwand and Turan Shah" (Howgego), in the original Spanish, by the Portuguese merchant adventurer Pedro Teixeira (1563-1645?). It is one of the earliest European sources to mention Qatar, with notes on the pearl fishing in the region that may be translated: "The pearl fishery at Bahrain begins some years in June They generally go to Qatar to fish, a port on the coast of Arabia, 10 leagues south of the Island Bahrain. The pearls of this sea surpass all others in goodness and weight ". The work is divided into three parts. The first, which is the largest, deals with the kings of Persia. It is a summarized translation of the voluminous Rawzat as-safâ . by the Persian historian Mir Khwand (ca. 1434-1498), and is probably the first translation of the text into a European language. The second part is a translation of the chronicle of the kings of Hormuz by the Ayyubid emir Turan Shah (d. 1180), a text that survives only in translations. Both parts contain a chronological account of the kings, but also provide a more general history of the region. The third and last part contains an account of Teixeira's later travels from India to Italy in the 1600-1601 and 1604-1605, visiting China, Mexico and the Middle East. With the bookplate of the political leader and U.S. senator Boies Penrose. Slightly browned, lower corner of the second leaf restored, head margin closely trimmed, shaving the running-title on the first few and a couple later leaves. Otherwise in very good condition. Binding only very slightly rubbed, with a few small superficial wormholes on the sides. Bookseller Inventory # I7MDQ8CX2BK2

Item Description: Nissen, BBI 695; Nissen, ZBI 1488; Palau 100869 ("Es muy dificil reunir la obra complete"); Sabin 26779; Zimmer, p. 237. First edition of this monumental account of the natural and civil history of Chile, with numerous beautiful illustrations mostly in very fine colouring. This set has the complete text, which is unusual since the work was issued over a period of 27 years. In 1830, the French botanist Claude Gay was asked by the government of Chile to make a detailed description of the history, geography, geology and natural history of their country. Gay travelled through Chile during eleven years to do all the scientific research he needed for his work. The result was the present work, the first complete description of Chilean history and a model in modern historiography, with its meticulous examination of sources and documents. Good set. First edition, in the original Dutch, of Jacob Maire's journal of his famous 1615-1617 voyage to circumnavigate the globe, together with the first Dutch edition of Herrera's description of the New World, and the first Dutch edition of Ordóñez de Caballos's description of the what was then called the West Indies (in fact including material on South and Central America). Le Maire's discoveries showed for the first time that Tierra del Fuego was an island and advanced our topographic knowledge on many other matters. The three works together include 19 maps and give the most detailed and up-to-date information then available about the topography of the Americas and parts of New Guinea, the East Indies and the Pacific islands. It also contains the first two maps to show the Baja peninsula and southern California as an island, an error that was copied for more than a century. These two new maps also show the non-existent northwest passage. Maps A-C (Tierra del Fuego, the South Pacific and the coast of New Guinea) include the route of Le Maire's voyage. The map of the Americas (with parts of the coasts of China and West Africa) includes the meridians that divided the world between Spain and Portugal according to the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas .With the bookplate of the great Dutch book collector Isaac Meulman (1807-1868) and several owners' inscriptions. With a few leaves trimmed close to the folio number but with no loss beyond one full point, and an occasional minor spot, smudge or small stain, but otherwise in very good condition. The boards are slightly bowed and show a few spots and smudges, with one corner bumped, but the binding is otherwise very good. A milestone in the history of exploration, especially for the America's, with 19 maps including the first two to show California as an island. Bookseller Inventory # I4MGBHSNNRHU

Item Description: Abbey, Travel 698; Palau 363371; Sabin 99460; Tooley 495. First printing of beautiful hand-coloured aquatint views of Argentina, all conceived and drawn from life by Emeric Essex Vidal in the years 1816 to 1818, accompanied by descriptions of the scenery, costumes and habits of the peoples and regions depicted. The plates were executed by various engravers between May and October 1820 and first issued in 6 monthly parts. 750 copies, including the present, were issued in Elephant 4to format. There was also an issue in Atlas folio and apparently a reprint in large and small 4to, still dated 1820, not normally distinguished in the literature from the present first printing (Palau and Sabin describe the work as a folio, but the Elephant 4to is often described as a folio). Tooley notes "the importance of its subject" and describes this publication as "the only notable colour plate book in English dealing with the Argentine". With the red leather Beeleigh Abbey armorial bookplate of William Alfred Foyle (1885-1963). With two stitching holes from the previous binding in the margins. With old folds in some of the folding plates and occasional minor browning, but still in very good condition and largely untrimmed, with most deckles intact. With a tiny tear in the morocco of one corner but binding otherwise fine. First printing of beautiful views of life in Argentina in the period 1816 to 1818. Bookseller Inventory # 17039

Item Description: Xlibris Corporation, 2003. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: Collecting Houses is a story about houses-their cellars, attics, and everything in between. It's about houses the author has moved, dismantled, reclaimed, recorded. It's about houses Baker found hidden in the woods, houses she rescued from ignorance, greed or bureaucracy, and houses she discovered masquerading behind all sorts of disguises. It's about how a house feels to be, abandoned, condemned, moved, tinkered with, ripped apart, modernized, put on The National Registry or sent to Alaska. These are not just any houses, but very old ones, old for this country anyway. Not that Baker feels that our later houses aren't interesting, but what she loves the most is the freshness of the very beginning: the distinctive, intangible quality that surrounds 17th and early 18th century houses. And that's where she become rooted. Rooted in the adventure, the thrill of discovery and the tantalizing mysteries that reside behind the walls of our early American structures. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always instructive, Collecting Houses teaches the reader how to know an old house, how to hear its voice, how to understand its language, recognize its personalities and take care of its needs. Item Description: For Le Pautre in general: Millard coll. (French), pp. 293-298 (cf. no. 100, with Mariette eds. of other Le Pautre prints). Ten complete and very rare etched and engraved architectural-ornamental print series (each with 6 prints), designed and executed by the leading Paris architect and engraver Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682). "One of the most inventive and prolific ornamental draftsmen of all time. . Le Pautre's importance is vast. . All Europe followed his influence until the end of the eighteenth century." (Millard). Working for the Manufacture des Gobelins and on his own account, Le Pautre executed much work for Louis XIV. The work also provides a survey of Paris fashion in interior decoration fairly early in the reign of Louis XIV and helped to determine and establish the richly ornamental style we associate with Louis and his circles. The collection contains the following print series:Ad 1. Retables dautels a l[']italien[n]e . Paris, Pierre II Mariette, [ca. 1670]. Ad 2. Tabernacles pour orner et embellir les autels nouvellement inventés et gravés . Paris, Pierre II Mariette, [ca. 1670]. Ad 3. [Autels]. [Paris], Jean I Le Blond, [ca. 1655]. Ad 4. Item Description: ZhangJiaKou, HeBei Province PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF C, 1951. Book Condition: Good. On offer is a significant, historical manuscript document archive of 120 pages handwritten by a Chinese teacher named Wang JiYao who was a teacher at the Food Oil factory, City of ZhangJiaKou, HeBei Province in the era of the anti-rights struggle of the 1950's. Historians and researchers and collectors of the era will note the schizophrenic nature of the times so clearly displayed by the totality of these papers. The man in this archive was a teacher born in early 1930s becoming a teacher in 1951. As the Chinese government launched a call for intellectuals to give advice and even criticize the leader of the government in early 1957 this teacher gave frank and reasonable advice and criticism of the government. Later that year, the situation reversed. He and thousands of other intellectuals in China who criticized their leaders and government were judged guilty of anti-socialist thought and right wing deviation. He was classified as a Rightist for what he said in his daily life. Some examples: "The brutality of the communist party is unsurpassed by the Qin Emperor"; "It should be fine to criticize Chairman Mao, because he is an educated man"; "If the leader refuses the criticism, then he should not be a leader". The writer was called to confess his so called crimes. The confession was written by Wang JiYao from 1951 to 1957, the material written before 1957 was related to his family, because he was born to a landowner's family, which was classified as the class enemy number one. Other reports were written by many coworkers to show Wang JiYao had the rightist ideas by revealing what he said in the past. No conviction material was attached. The 120 pages consist of more than 10 files, including: his registration forms in early 1950s; three impeachment or disclosure files [including testimony of co-workers; and five files of his confessions of guilt (70 pages!) in 1957. This archive is a particularly interesting encapsulation within one man's experience of a sadly all too typical occasion in mid 20th Century China. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: One online source provides: The Anti-Rightist Movement of the People's Republic of China in the 1950s and early 1960s consisted of a series of campaigns to purge alleged "rightists" within the Communist Party of China (CPC) and abroad. The definition of "rightists" was not always consistent, sometimes including critics to the left of the government, but officially referred to those intellectuals who appeared to favour capitalism and class divisions and against collectivization. The campaigns were instigated by Chairman Mao Zedong and saw the political persecution of an estimated 550,000. The Anti-Rightist Movement was a reaction against the Hundred Flowers Campaign, which had promoted pluralism of expression and criticism of the government. Going perhaps as far back as the Long March there had been resentment against "rightists" inside the CPC, for example Zhang Bojun. The first wave of attacks began immediately following the end of the Hundred Flowers movement in July 1957. By the end of the year, 300,000 people had been labeled as rightists, including the writer Ding Ling. Future premier Zhu Rongji, then working in the State Planning Commission, was purged in 1958. Most of the accused were intellectuals. The penalties included informal criticism, "re-education through labour" and in some cases death. One main target was the independent legal system. Legal professionals were transferred to other jobs; judicial power was exercised instead by political cadres and the police. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Chinese Language. Item Description: Choulant, pp. 296-297; ESTC T137584; Gaskell 56; Heirs of Hippocrates 942; Roberts & Tomlinson, pp. 460-465. Magnificent first edition of a bilingual (Latin and English) anatomical atlas on obstetrics and gynaecology, illustrated with 34 mostly life-sized and accurately detailed anatomical plates of pregnant women and their unborn children. William Hunter (1718-1783), royal physician and professor of anatomy at the Society of Naval Surgeons, wrote the preface and the notes to the plates, had the illustrations drawn under his supervision and worked closely with the engravers, who produced the plates at his expense. The work began when a young woman died suddenly at full term in 1751 and Hunter was able to procure her body before any deterioration. In the preface Hunter gives remarkable details about his techniques, such as "the injection of the blood-vessels" to preserve the body for the artists, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of anatomical illustration, which he mixes here. "One of the great publications of world medical literature as well as a classic of book production" (Heirs of Hippocrates) and "one of the great artistic achievements in medicine" (Haskell Norman). With the ca. 1800 ink stamp of "The Liverpool Library". Without the dedication leaf, fore-edge of plate VIII slightly shaved, a small restoration removing its engraver's name, a few other small marginal restorations, a crease in 1 plate and a few text leaves, and a faint marginal water stain in the last few leaves, but still generally in good condition. The marbled-paper sides are slightly rubbed but the binding is otherwise very good. A spectacular showpiece for any collection in the field of anatomical illustration, women's studies, obstetrics, gynaecology or book production. Bookseller Inventory # 98UDDUCFFZDL

Item Description: 2000 flyers; A unique genre of graphic design, the rave flyer is bred entirely underground. The rave scene has had a tremendous impact on contemporary mainstream culture in its musical, social and creative growth. The flyer is the primary testament of this transmission, standing not only as an important commercial art form, but also as a concise and substantive record of an entire movement. This collection documents some of the best English rave flyers of the last two decades a colorful and incredible visual record of a movement that has forever changed culture. There are also some Australian and Scottish flyers from major city raves. Rave flyers became one of the most potent symbols of youth culture in the 1990s their bright colors signifying a return to psychedelia, their computer-generated design a clue to future technology fetishes, their dense text an invitation to a subculture with its own deities and language. Item Description: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2013. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: Regarded as the second most important book to come out of Nazi Germany, Alfred Rosenberg's Der Mythus des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts is a philosophical and political map which outlines the ideological background to the Nazi Party and maps out how that party viewed society, other races, social ordering, religion, art, aesthetics and the structure of the state. The "Mythus" to which Rosenberg (who was also editor of the Nazi Party newspaper) refers was the concept of blood, which, according to the preface, "unchains the racial world-revolution."Rosenberg's no-hold barred depiction of the history of Christianity earned it the accusation that it was anti-Christian, and that unjustified controversy overshadowed the most interesting sections of the book which deal with the world racial situation and the demand for racially homogenous states as the only method to preserve individual world cultures.Rosenberg was hanged at Nuremberg on charges of "waging wars of aggression" even though he had never served in the military, and it is likely that he was hanged purely because of this book.ContentsPrefaceBook One: The Conflict of ValuesChapter I. Item Description: Huth, p. 103; Menessier de La Lance II, p. 414; Nissen, ZBI 3380. First edition of a rare anatomical plate book with fine lithographed plates illustrating the proportions, bones and muscles of all parts of the horse. The muscles in the anatomical plates are subtly coloured and shaded in pink. The book was written by the French painter Jean Claude Reverchon (1796-1851), who taught art at the veterinary college in Lyon from 1839 to 1836.Mennessier de la Lance notes that some copies have the plates in black and white, while some have them coloured. Our copy matches the collation given by Mennessier de la Lance and Nissen, with (as usual) no descriptive text for plate 9 (showing only the horse's skeleton, from front and back) and without plate 18, printed by Lefevre without accompanying descriptive text, noted in a few copies by KVK/WorldCat.The edition therefore includes 19 letterpress leaves, all printed on one side only: title-page, avant-propos, explanatory text for the frontispiece and explanatory text for plates 1-8 and 10-17. The book has been treated for mildew, leaving some spotting, marginal soiling and one plate wrinkled. Pictorial horse book in good condition with stunning anatomical plates. Item Description: Beautiful and elegant writing book by Johannes Winand, each leaf with a calligraphic exercise written in German (14), Dutch (4), Latin (3), French (1) or Italian (1). The leaves of the album have been numbered in pencil. Each leaf begins with a large decorated initial letter, with the 23 leaves covering the alphabet from A to Z, with a single letter for I/J and for U/V. It includes W but lacks R, which should have come between leaves 16/Q and 17/S. The main texts of most leaves are written in various gothic hands but five are in Latin hands. The initials are also mostly gothic, with 8 roman and 1 script. Some exercises take the form of letters addressed to notables, family, etc., others begin with an epithet followed by an often religious text. 11 leaves are signed J. or Jaen or Jo(h)annes Winandi, and 4 are dated 1689. The German form of his name was probably Johann Winand. He was most likely a brilliant pupil rather than a master, since we have found no reference to a writing master of that name or another writing book by him. Several people of that name were born in the Rhineland area in the years around 1670.The calligraphic texts are written in the various hands considered appropriate for the various languages: German and Dutch in gothic hands; Latin, French and Italian in Latin hands, all including both cursive and more formal hands. The calligraphy is enriched with large initials, several of which are highlighted with gold and/or red or given penwork flourishes. The texts are illustrated with pen drawings of a stork, a spider in its web, a cat with a mouse, a dragon, a squirrel, a dog, a butterfly, etc. Some relate to the texts; others are merely decorative. With a round library stamp in open areas on the first and last leaf erased, but from a Jesuit library, with the IHS and cross still visible on the last leaf. One leaf (with initial R) is probably lacking and the leaves have been cut down, generally leaving about a half centimeter margin, but occasionally just touching part of the text or illustration, and mounted on the leaves of the mid-19th-century album. The black ink has sometimes eaten through the paper, mostly in large areas of black as in a few of the initials, and there is a tear repaired across 1 leaf, but the leaves are otherwise in good condition. The gold has often not bonded well, so that some has come off, exposing the green ground underneath. A beautiful manuscript writing book, with its 23 leaves giving a complete alphabet of decorated initials except for the letter R. Bookseller Inventory # 21282

Item Description: Dejager 136; Nissen, ZBI 3185 (calls for 24 plates); VD17 3:311219G (7 copies, incl. 2 incomplete). Second, enlarged and corrected edition of a "very elaborate compilation of the available literature on horsemanship, Pinter von der Au referred to his sources without restraint, from Xenophon and Vegetius, via Rusio and Ruellius to Carraciolo and Zechendorff. Quotations from Cicero and Caesar, Strabo, Plinius and Varro testify to his classical education. With regards to the methods for dressage Pinter leans heavily on Antoine Pluvinel and he is much less inclined to use cruel methods and devices than other stable and riding masters of the 17th century. The work is divided into three main parts: (1) on horses in general, horse breeding, care and treatment of horses, livery stable and stud farm, (2) on riding, training and dressage, including bits and reins, and (3) on horse medicine" (Dejager). With library on frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed and some small restorations to the spine. Some minor thumbing in the margins of the frontispiece, a couple spots on the plates, large tear in the first plate and some false folds; a good copy. Bookseller Inventory # 22992
