First printing. 14 x 21.5 brown cloth boards with gilt tiles to the spine, 192pp with four photographic leaves (11 images in all) in original, unclipped dust jacket designed by Val Biro, showing 15s net price. The boards are in excellent condition, noting a 5mm diameter spot. All fore edge corners are firm, sharp and square. There are toned bands caused by acid migration on both front and rear endpaper otherwise the pages are very clean with only the very occasional spot. The dust jacket is in very good plus condition having light dust marking and a light crease at the top of the rear panel with an associated 3mm closed tear, very light surface layer rubbing at the extreme spine end tips. It is in original, unrestored condition, with no tape or reinforcement to the verso and it is protected in a clear, removable cover. A very nice example of a book that was a favourite of David Bowie and inspiration for his song 'Heroes'. Rainford & Parris Books welcomes enquiries, so please do not hesitate to ask if you require further images or have any questions. All books are packaged with great care.

FIRST EDITION, vignette to title-page, 8 photographic plates. pp. 192, crown 8vo, original brown boards, backstrip lettered in gilt and slightly sunned through the dustjacket, faint partial browning to free endpapers, the dustjacket by Biro, a touch of rubbing at extremities, the rear panel faintly toned with some very minor soiling, repriced in pencil to front flap, very good. The doctor's account of his experiences in Italy's former African colonies: 'Children, animals and magic are the main themes' (blurb). A Glossary at the rear largely provides native terms of the region, but also includes a definition for British readers of 'Pizza (It.): Southern Italian dish: a sort of cake seasoned with cheese, tomatoes, onions, chillis, olives and anchovies'. Interest in this book, which followed 'A Cure for Serpents', has grown in recent years due to it having been a favourite of David Bowie.
