Manuscript / Paper Collectible First Edition
No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Single Sheet. Quarto. Printed on the rectos only. A three-paragraph entry on John Updike written for the Academic American Encyclopedia by Jerome Klinkowitz. This sheet is dated April 21, 1992. The text in full: "UPDIKE, JOHN / {uhp -dyk} / Famous among contemporary writers for his rich, elegant prose and the craftsmanship of his short stories and his many novels, John Updike, b. Shillington, Pa., Mar. 18, 1932, was trained as a graphic artist. As an English major at Harvard (1950-54), he contributed cartoons, verse, and parodies to the Harvard Lampoon. Following a Knox Fellowship at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Arts at Oxford (1954-55), Updike became a staff writer for the New Yorker. In 1957 he moved to Massachusetts to devote himself to fiction. / Middle-class manners, examined from almost every possible perspective, are Updike's favorite subject. The novel Rabbit Run (1960) and the story collection Pigeon Feathers (1962) are representative works from Updike s early period. Like Rabbit, many of Updike s later characters confuse sexuality with spiritual ecstasy, notably in Couples (1968). Updike s fondness for writing books in groups has produced four Rabbit novels; two books about the misadventures of Henry Bech (Bech: A Book, 1970, Beck is Back, 1982); and three novels that, in different ways, refer to the Scarlet Letter of Nathaniel Hawthorne: A Month of Sundays (1975), Roger's Version (1986), and S (1988), in which the main character is a contemporary Hester Prynne. / Updike has also achieved a reputation as a perceptive book reviewer in his pieces for the New Yorker, and as a poet. He published Just Looking: Essays on Art in 1989, and Odd Jobs: Essays and Criticism in 1991. The fourth and last of the Rabbit novels, entitled Rabbit at Rest, was published in 1990." The sheet has been signed by Updike beneath the title at the head of the page. Near fine.
