Soviet Mixed Power Experimental Fighter Aircraft Piston-Liquid Propellant Rocket Engine/Piston-Ramjet/Piston-Pulsejet & Piston-Compressor Jet Engine Designs of the 1940's The intent of this research paper is to provide an overview of the Soviet experimental fighter aircraft programs employing mixed power plants - piston-liquid propellant rocket engine, piston-ramjet, piston-pulsejet and piston-compressor jet engine accelerator technology, in the World War II and early post war period of the 1940's. A number of piston fighter aircraft types were converted for experimental roles from the Design Bureaus of Lavochkin and Yakovlev to test liquid propellant rocket engines and ramjet accelerators to increase maximum speed of in-service fighter aircraft, Sukhoi also developing the purpose designed Su-7 as a piston-liquid propellant rocket engine powered aircraft. Lavochkin also tested pulsejet accelerators on the La-7 and La-9 piston engine fighter families whilst Mikoyan, Sukhoi and Yakovlev tested piston-compressor jet engine accelerators. The latter employed a conversion from a serial piston engine fighter whist Mikoyan and Sukhoi developed new designs for their respective piston-compressor jet engine accelerator test programs. As no design provided the necessary combination of speed performance and reliability, the respective piston-liquid propellant rocket engine, piston-ramjet, piston-pulsejet and piston-compressor jet engine development programs, all of which were unreliable and over complex in their operation, would fall by the wayside due to the promise of better performance from the first generation exclusively jet powered fighter aircraft designs. A higher order panel method is used to evaluate the potential flow of a two dimensional supersonic V/STOL inlet. A non-symmetric analytical inlet model is developed to closely match a wind tunnel model. The analytical inlet is analyzed for flow characteristics around the lower cowl lip and auxiliary inlets. The results are obtained from the output of a computer program that is based on the Hess Panel Method which determines source strengths of panels distributed over a three dimensional body. The analytical model was designed for the implementation of drooped/translated cowl lip and auxiliary inlets as flow improvement concepts. A 40 or 70 degree droop lip can be incorporated on the inlet to determine if these geometry modifications result in flow improvements which may reduce the propensity for flow separation on the interior portion of the lip. Auxiliary inlets are employed to decrease the mass flow over the inlet lip. Thus, the peak flow velocity is reduced at the lip which also lessens the likelihood of flow separation on the interior portion of the lip. A 2, 4, and 6 inch translated lip can be employed to also decrease mass flow over the inlet lower lip in the same manner as the auxiliary inlet. The performance results of the flow improvement concepts show that three possible inlet configurations provide a situation where separation is less likely to occur. A 70 degree droop lip maintains flow conditions such that attached flow over the lower cowl lip may exist for the entire angle of attack range studied. A 0 degree droop and translated lip combination provides similar results for the angle of attack range. The third configuration consists of a 0 degree droop and auxiliary inlet combination. In this paper, preliminary studies on two turbine engine applications relevant to the tilt-rotor rotary wing aircraft are performed. The first case-study is the application of variable pitch turbine for the turbine performance improvement when operating at a substantially lower shaft speed. The calculations are made on the 75 percent speed and the 50 percent speed of operations. Our results indicate that with the use of the variable pitch turbines, a nominal (3 percent (probable) to 5 percent (hypothetical)) efficiency improvement at the 75 percent speed, and a notable (6 percent (probable) to 12 percent (hypothetical)) efficiency improvement at the 50 percent speed, without sacrificing the turbine power productions, are achievable if the technical difficulty of turning the turbine vanes and blades can be circumvented. The second casestudy is the contingency turbine power generation for the tilt-rotor aircraft in the One Engine Inoperative (OEI) scenario. For this study, calculations are performed on two promising methods: throttle push and steam injection. By isolating the power turbine and limiting its air mass flow rate to be no more than the air flow intake of the take-off operation, while increasing the turbine inlet total temperature (simulating the throttle push) or increasing the air-steam mixture flow rate (simulating the steam injection condition), our results show that an amount of 30 to 45 percent extra power, to the nominal take-off power, can be generated by either of the two methods.
