Byrd's Alone is the harrowing memoir of his 1934 solo expedition to an Antarctic outpost during the dark winter, detailing his struggle for survival against extreme cold, isolation, and, critically, carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty stove, revealing a profound battle with mental and physical illness as he fought to preserve his sanity in the harshest environment on Earth. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. When Admiral Richard E. Byrd set out on his second Antarctic expedition in 1934, he was already an international hero for having piloted the first flights over the North and South Poles. His plan for this latest adventure was to spend six months alone near the bottom of the world, gathering weather data and indulging his desire to taste peace and quiet long enough to know how good they really are. But early on things went terribly wrong. Isolated in the pervasive polar night with no hope of release until spring, Byrd began suffering inexplicable symptoms of mental and physical illness. By the time he discovered that carbon monoxide from a defective stovepipe was poisoning him, Byrd was already engaged in a monumental struggle to save his life and preserve his sanity. When Alone was first published in 1938, it became an enormous bestseller. This edition keeps alive Byrds unforgettable narrative for new generations of readers. The story of Admiral Richard E. Byrd, who set out on an Antarctic expedition in 1934 with the aim of collating weather data and indulging his desire "to taste peace and quiet long enough to know how good they really are". But things went badly wrong and he was soon engaged in a battle for survival. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. G.P. Putnam's Sons. New York. 1938. 296 pages. A pristine, fine collectible condition first edition, fourth printing in its original VG DJ with $2.50 price intact on flap. Book is pristine, inside and out. Attractive DJ is VG with rubbing along edges and minor chipping. An autobiographical memoir by Byrd, the Rear Admiral of the U.S. Navy, and first man to reach the North and South Poles by air, during his 1933 stint in Antarctica, alone, for five months. He lived to tell, barely, being found on deaths door, thanks to a slow carbon monoxide leak from a poorly ventilated stove at the meteorological station. Bizarre radio transmissions were the first tip-off, something wasn't right. The only problem was, how quick could a rescue expedition get to the South Pole, in 1933? An exceptional copy of the classic, in fine condition, in a VG DJ.

First Edition. With decorations printed in blue and white by Richard E. Harrison. 8vo, original navy blue cloth, lettered in light blue on the upper cover and spine. ix, 296. A very good and handsome copy, the spine panel just a light bit mellowed. FIRST EDITION of Admiral Byrd's thrilling and emotional account of his months spent all alone at the Bolling Advance Weather Base which he manned during the winter of 1934. He came very near to dying there at the base, about half way in-between Little America and the South Pole. He explains in his preface that it took him 4 years to write this book due to the intensely personal and emotional nature of his experience. It is very much unlike his narratives of former expeditions which were factual and scientific. This work is a simple and objective truth about one man's feelings ALONE with himself in the harshest of imaginable places.

This copy is inscribed on the half title: "To Grace Tully / The young lady who has contributed so much to her country during these critical years, I present this volume with enduring appreciation for her friendliness and courtesies to me and with high regard and esteem. Richard E. Byrd." Grace Tully (1900-1984) was a longtime private secretary to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She joined Roosevelt's staff in 1928, when he was Governor of New York. She communicated frequently with Admiral Byrd, as the intermediary between Byrd and Roosevelt, both longtime friends. Tully became Roosevelt's primary secretary in 1941 after his previous secretary, Marguerite "Missy" LeHand, was incapacitated by a stroke. She managed the President's correspondence, typed dictations, and handled confidential matters during World War II. Tully was with Roosevelt when he died in Warm Springs, Georgia in April, 1945. A few years later, she published "FDR: My Boss," a memoir of her time working with the President.
