This is a contemporary history of the Civil War with a focus on changing opinions of slavery, illustrated with engravings, maps and diagrams. Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was a prominent newspaper man who vigorously opposed slavery. Of particular interest are the images of Lincoln surrounded by his Cabinet and a view of the Union Generals.

Completing the title page: "Intended to exhibit especially its moral and political phases, with the drift and progress of American opinion respecting human slavery, from 1776 to the close of the war for the union. The first edition of these volumes were published in 1864 and 1866 respectively. A thorough history of the U.S. Civil War by an outspoken abolitionist. Greeley was an active politician during the nineteenth century, and made an unsuccessful run for President of the United States. Significant rubbing to volume one's front board, a tear to its spine's crown, the rear board of volume one starting.
