A sampling of the Americanisms in this book: "all-winsome" ("sweet, pleasant"), "Americanism" ("a way of speaking peculiarly to this country"), "catty-cornered" ("diagonally"), "gravy" ("used in New England instead of 'juice'"), "hoity-toity" ("an exclamation surprise or disaprobation, with some degree of contempt"), "latish" ("rather late"), "pollywog, or pollywig" ("a tadpole"), "sky-racket" ("the vulgar pronunciation of 'sky-rocket'"), "tit for tat" ("I shall treat you as you treat me"), and "yourn" ("contraction of 'your own'"). John Russell Bartlett (1805-1886) was an American linguist and historian. He is best-known for this work, A Dictionary of Americanisms.
