Book First Edition
Full-Leather. Condition: Good. First Edition. All volumes are bound in full leather flexible boards with red spine labels with gilt lettering and marbled endpapers and marbled top-, fore-, and bottom-edges. Vol. 1: Aaron to Crandall, frontis of John Adams, 11 engraved plates with tissue guards, there is some water staining to the lower right portion of the text which is most noticeable on the plates but not affecting the image. There is cracking of the leather of the front hinge, binding fairly strong. Vol. 2: Crane to Grimshaw, frontis of Grant, 9 engraved plates with tissue guards, unfortunately there is some water staining to several of these plates, although the water has not damaged the text noticeably. Again, moderate cracking of the leather of the hinges but binding strong. Vol. 3: Grinnell to Lockwood, frontis of Lincoln, plus 10 engraved plates, binding and leather strong, no water damage to plates. Vol. 4: Lodge to Pickens, frontis of longfellow, 9 engraved plates in very good condition, binding strong but a little cracking of the leather up the rear gutter. Vol. 5: Pickering to Sumter, frontis of Sherman, 9 engraved plates in very good condition, leather and binding strong. Vol. 6: Sunderland to Zurita, frontis of Washington, 9 engraved plates, leather and binding strong, but a little cracking of the leather of the upper front gutter. Vol. 7: Abbett to Young and Analytical Index, frontis of Dewey, 13 engraved plates, leather and binding strong. If there is a concern about missing plates, please let me recheck--I see no evidence of plates or pages that have been removed and I don't even think there is a tissue guard that is missing. The volumes have various problems, mainly with wear and deterioration along the fore edge side of the book (may have been stored where there was humidity exposures). Fairly attractive set with the light brown full leather and burgundy spine labels with gilt lettering and lines. Priority mail, if requested, would be $26.50 instead of $3.50 ID# NB/room 2.

Raised spine bands, with gilt lettering and floral decoration. Marbled end leaves, Ex-Library, though with minimal markings. Square library stickers on spine have been previously removed, leaving a little roughness of the leather. Pages 23-26, including one plate, are detached, though laid in place. These leaves show very light edge wear. Volume are all, otherwise very tight. Bottom edges show general light wear. Leather shows scattered rubbing and scuffs, and is just a little brittle and cracked. Despite faults, set remains attractive and has nice shelf appeal.
