It mainly analyses applications of mathematical theories in several contexts. The author analyses the generation of advanced theories that enable people to understand problems in a scientific way, and proposes cognitive models dealing with the observation of human behaviour and its abstraction into comprehensible mathematical models, as this is a main problem in our modern world. This work is directed at people concerned with understanding cognitive processes when tackling complex problems, as it shows the building of knowledge in the making of scientific approaches to any discipline. Using a cross-disciplinary approach, he focuses on the key issues of theories and technologies applicable in a wide variety of contexts, for example in military organizations, in research and development departments and in general strategic planning, as shown in applied cases in Latin America. -- Contents: 1. An Epistemic Approach to the Emergence of Operational Research As a Business Tool; 2. PMS Blackett and the Emergence of Quantitative Business Analysis: a Semiotic Approach; 3. The Paratextual Side: Language and Texts in the Emergence of Quantitative Analysis; 4. R.A. Fisher: Experiments and Mathematics, a Multidisciplinary View; 5. Statistical Methods for Research Workers: an Epistemology Not a Methodology; 6. Genetic Theory of Natural Selection: A Parallel Case Study to Business Applications or Science in Action; 7. Some Stochastic Problems in Physics and Mathematics.: KAC, Mark (1914-1984):

About this Item: Dallas: Magnolia Petroleum Company, 1957., 1957. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 2 leaves, 189 pp (printed no rectos only); figs. Original cloth, 4to. Very Good+. Inscribed: 'To George U./ 'Master', Teacher and friend/Mark Kac/Boulder, Colorado/June 28, 1957.' 'In 1938 [Kac] came to the United States, where in 1943 he met the second figure [after Hugo Steinhaus] to deeply influence his scientific career, George E. Uhlenbeck, at the Radiation Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was Uhlenbeck who polarized Kac to apply his enormous talents to fundamental problems in statistical mechanics. No doubt, Uhlenbeck had realized Kac's genius for solving very difficult problems and devising simple, instructive physical models. Kac had in common with Uhlenbeck's teacher, Paul Ehrenfest, a special gift for inventing models. Kac's predilection for the concrete rather than the formal and the abstract, as he once put it, must have given Uhlenbeck the hope correctly as it turned out that Kac might contribute to the solution of some of he basic open questions in statistical mechanics' (E. G. D. Cohen, 'Mark Kac', Physics Today, April 1985, p. 99; Ezechiel Godert David Cohen, b. 1923, was one of Uhlenbeck's students). 'From 1943 to 1947 Kac was associated off and on with the Radiation Lab at MIT, where he met and began to collaborate with George Uhlenbeck. This was an important event for him. It reawakened his interest in statistical mechanics and was a decisive factor in his moving to be with Uhlenbeck at The Rockefeller University in 1962. . . . to my mind, Kac's most inspiring work in this line is contained in the three papers written jointly with P. C. Hemmer and Uhlenbeck (1963), in which they related the phase transition of a one-dimensional model of a gas to the splitting of the lowest eigenvalue of an allied integral equation and derived, for that model, the (previously ad hoc) van der Waal's equation of state, Maxwell's rule of equal areas included a real tour de force' (H. P. McKean, 'Mark Kac: 1914-1984', Biographical Memoirs, National Academy of Sciences, 1990). In 1973 there appeared the book Conceptual Development of Statistical Mechanics: Conversations between George E. Uhlenbeck, Mark Kac, and Jagdish Mehra. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 23942
