About this Item: Longmans, London, 1959. First edition. First edition. 46 plates, 8 maps to the text & folding map in pocket. xvi, 326 pp. 8vo. "I went to Southern Arabia only just in time." Rare signed copy in the dust jacket. Arabian Sands is Thesiger's first and most important work, recounting his crossing of the Empty Quarter under the aegis of the Middle East Anti-Locust Unit in 1946-7. Although brief reports of the journey were published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in the late 1940s, it was only through the efforts of his friend Graham Watson and the publisher Mark Longman that Thesiger was persuaded to write a book-length account. For a decade, Thesiger had longed to explore the Empty Quarter and seized the opportunity presented by Owen Bevan Lean to accompany the Anti-Locust unit. Thesiger crossed the empty quarter twice: first in 1946-7, on a 2000 mile journey that began and ended at Salala on the south coast. He set again almost immediately in 1947, departing Manwakh well in Yemen and visited at Liwa Oasis and then to Abu Dhabi town. This included a brief imprisonment in Saudi Arabia. Arabian Sands includes accounts of both these crossings and is illustrated with Thesiger's own dramatic photographs.Thesiger, who had a revulsion to modern life, immersed himself in the country, made friends with the Arabs and travelled on foot and by camel. He states boldly in the introduction to this work, whatever their results "[future explorers] will never know the spirit of the land nor the greatness of the Arabs." Arabian Sands was received enthusiastically in the press and Thesiger himself thought it "his finest book" (ODNB). The Daily Telegraph stated: "Following worthily in the tradition of Burton, Lawrence, Philby and Thomas, [Arabian Sands] is, very likely, the book about Arabia to end all books about Arabia." Indeed, St John Philby described Thesiger as "probably the greatest of all explorers" (Maitland, 380) and Sir John Glubb regarded him "the last, and certainly one of the greatest, of the British travellers among the Arabs" (ibid.). Alexander Maitland, Wilfred Thesiger: the Life of the Great Explorer (2006) Fine original cloth, spine gilt, in very good dj, headcap chipped, some minor shelfwear 46 plates, 8 maps to the text & folding map in pocket. xvi, 326 pp. 8vo. About this Item: Longmans, London., 1959. First edition. Octavo. pp xvi, 326. Maps and numerous photographs. Folding map in pocket at rear. One of the great travel books.Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Dick Bird from Wilfrid Thesiger". Thesiger writes of Richard Bird on pages 251 and 254: ". an Englishman called Bird was staying in Buraimi in another of the villages, trying to persuade the tribes to let a Company look for oil. I gathered he was having little success. I had met Dick Bird three years before when he was a Political Officer in Bahrain. He was interested in and sympathetically disposed towards the Arbas, and we later became friends. . Zayid was often busy during these days helping Bird with his interminable discussions with tribal sheikhs from the surrounding country. . Bird was friendly but suspicious, wondering if I was working for some rival company. I kept away from him when visiting tribesman were about. Anyway, I was averse to all oil companies, dreading the changes and disintegration of society which they inevitably caused." Association copies from Thesiger are very scarce. Spine bruised at head and one corner a little bumped. Very good indeed in very good marked dustwrapper rubbed at the edges. Seller Inventory # THESIGER002470

About this Item: Longmans, Green and Co, London, 1959. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Wilfred Thesiger on the title page, with a contemporary signature. An excellent example in a near fine dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities. Map unopened in the inside pocket of the rear pastedown. Though educated at Eton and Oxford, Wilfred Thesiger was repulsed by the softness and rigidity of Western life-"the machines, the calling cards, the meticulously aligned streets." In the spirit of T. E. Lawrence, he set out to explore the deserts of Arabia, traveling among peoples who had never seen a European and considered it their duty to kill Christian infidels. His now-classic account is invaluable to understanding the modern Middle East. "Following worthily in the tradition of Burton, Lawrence, Philby and Thomas, [Arabian Sands] is, very likely, the book about Arabia to end all books about Arabia" (The Daily Telegraph, London). About this Item: Longmans, London, 1959. Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 69 Photos and Folding Map Inside the Back Cover (illustrator). Stated First Edition. Thesiger's first book, a classic of travel in the most remost corner of desert Arabia. Pages xvi, 326 with index. Handsome beige cloth with a bright gilt title on the spine. Only a hint of edgewear on the dustjacket, which is NOT price clipped. The dust jacket also has a slight moisture stain on the back. Very clean and tight inside with no prior owner marks. The head of the British Embassy in Jidda, Laurence Grafftey-Smith, was his host at the end of the punishing ordeal and wrote that Thesiger had a "Gargantuan appetite". "When I can eat, I do", said Thesiger. His bold signature is on the title page. The folding map in the back pocket is AS NEW. This copy includes an obituary of Thesiger, the greatest and bravest of the Arabian explorers. RARE SIGNED COPY, especially in this condition. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 078520

About this Item: 1960. London, Longmans, Green and Co Ltd, [1960]. 8vo. Original cream boards, spine lettered in gilt and black, dustwrapper price-clipped; pp. xvi, 326, [2 (blank)]; photographic frontispiece and 23 plates bearing 68 photographic illustrations recto and verso after Thesiger, 8 maps in the text after K.C. Jordan, 5 full-page, one colour-printed folding map 'The Empty Quarter from Traverses by W. Thesiger Compiled by The Royal Geographical Society 1945-50' after K.C. Jordan inserted in pocket on lower pastedown; wrapper with light abrasures around edges, otherwise a very good copy. Second impression, signed by the author on title-page. Thesiger's 'first and - in his opinion - his finest book' (ODNB). Arabian Sands recounts Thesiger's travels with the Bedu through the Empty Quarter between 1945 and 1950: 'The empty quarter or Rub’ al-Khali had been crossed by Bertram Thomas in 1931 and by Harry St John Philby in 1932. Understandably Thomas had followed the easiest route. Philby's journey, on the other hand, involved a trek of 400 miles between wells, which Thesiger regarded as an epic of desert exploration. Despite such important journeys, vast areas of the empty quarter still remained unexplored. Thesiger first crossed the empty quarter in 1946-7, a journey of 2000 miles that began and ended at Salala, on Arabia's south coast. In February 1947 he met Salim bin Kabina, a sixteen-year-old Bedu of the Rashid tribe, who, together with Salim bin Ghabaisha, also of the Rashid, became Thesiger's inseparable companion during his years in Arabia. Bin Kabina and bin Ghabaisha accompanied his second crossing of the empty quarter, in 1947-8, and his later journeys, in 1949 and 1950, in Oman' (Alexander Maitland in ODNB). P.N. He spent five years (1945-50) in and around the Empty Quarter, in Southern Arabia. Under the pretext of being involved in the Anti-locust Unit, he traversed the Empty Quarter twice by camel. He was travelling in Oman, Saudi Arabia and Yemen before the introduction of the car and wireless communication, and largely before the invasion of Western oil prospectors. Seller Inventory # 4013

Octavo (220 x 148mm), pp. xvi, 326, [2 (blank)]; photographic frontispiece and 23 plates bearing 68 photographic illustrations recto-and-verso after Thesiger, 8 maps in the text after K.C. Jordan, 5 full-page, and one colour-printed folding map 'The Empty Quarter from Traverses by W. Thesiger Compiled by The Royal Geographical Society 1945-50' after K.C. Jordan, loose as issued in pocket on lower pastedown. (A few light spots, soft creasing on upper corners of some quires, splitting on block between quires 8-9 and 15-16.) Original cream boards, spine lettered in gilt and black, dustwrapper illustrated with photographs by Thesiger, retaining price. (Extremities lightly bumped, a few light spots on endpapers, dustwrapper slightly spotted, rubbed and chipped at edges, neat adhesive tape reinforcements on verso.) A very good copy. ¶¶¶First edition. Arabian Sands was Thesiger's first book -- and, in his opinion, 'his finest' (ODNB) -- and recounts his travels with the Bedu through the Empty Quarter between 1945 and 1950: 'The empty quarter or Rub' al-Khali had been crossed by Bertram Thomas in 1931 and by Harry St John Philby in 1932. Bin Kabina and bin Ghabaisha accompanied his second crossing of the empty quarter, in 1947-8, and his later journeys, in 1949 and 1950, in Oman' (op. cit.). Due to strikes by the printers and binders, Arabian Sands was not published until October 1959, but, once available, it was 'immediately successful, acclaimed enthusiastically by readers and reviewers alike' (A. Maitland Wilfred Thesiger. The Life of the Great Explorer (London: 2006), p. 379). Particularly noteworthy were the reactions of Sir John Glubb and Philby: the former 'praised Thesiger in The Times as "perhaps the last, and certainly one of the greatest, of the British travellers among the Arabs", while [. . .] Philby asserted that "The crowning touches have been placed on this exploratory activity in Arabia by Wilfred Thesiger, who is probably the greatest of all the explorers"' (loc. cit.). P.N. Grover, 'Bibliography of Works by Sir Wilfred Thesiger', p. 271. ¶¶¶FURTHER INFORMATION: please contact us for further information about this item and prices for shipping.
