Translated from the original French by Ella D'Arcy. ***Very good in the iconic Penguin designed cobalt blue and white card covers used for biographies. Edges of covers slightly rubbed and creased. No reading creases to the spine. No tears. Covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling (please see scans). Internally also very good, with no inscriptions. No significant creases or tears. Paper stock tanned. Spine tight. Without the original paper dustwrapper. ***182mm x 114mm. 252 pages. ***The first ten Penguin Books were launched in July 1935. These were books already published and known to be fairly popular, including detective novels by Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers, and an autobiography by Beverly Nichols. The two most prestigious books were Ernest Hemingway's war novel "A Farewell to Arms", and the biography of Percy Bysshe Shelley "Ariel" written by André Maurois. The first ten Penguins were an immediate success, sold through a range of outlets - bookstalls, bookshops and also department and chain stores. Within a week of the launch Woolworth's alone asked for a further 63,000 copies. The venture had become an immediate success and Penguin Books were here to stay. Most of the titles sold out fairly quickly and had to be re-printed and Allen Lane went ahead with more titles. ***A second impression of the first ever published Penguin book: André Maurois: "Ariel". The iconic Penguin Books No.1. in nice, bright condition, with the first twenty Penguin titles listed on the back cover. First and early impressions of the first ten Penguins are seldom found now in such presentable condition. Soiled blue and white card covers with wear to all edges especially the extreme front margin with 3 mm wide loss to the surface of the white section (silverfish?); browned and rubbed spine with 1 cm of damage at top including a little loss. Internally evidence that glue has been applied, the grubby half title creased with a 1 cm tear; light finger soiling to title page. Remaining contents generally clean, and tight.
Condition: Good. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A good condition book. Earlier impression (Third impression). This copy includes a dust jacket with small loss and some tears and brittleness at the folds. Covers beneath are still vibrant. Internal contents are moderately tanned at the edges and brighter towards the centres. A solid copy.
