Title cartouche in the lower middle section of the image with Ottoman soldiers cornering an Austrian officer, whose arm has been cut off, whose horse has fallen, whose camarade lies dying behind him--but whose valour is demonstrated by his sword held high and the decapitated head of an Ottoman soldier lying nearby. The town of Grocka is to the right of the image--the army is fleeing downstream, likely towards the town of Smederevo. This plan illustrates the humiliating retreat of the Austrian army (inscribed as the "Roman Imperial Army") before the Ottoman army at 3:00am on July 22, 1739. The Austrian field commander, over-confident due to previous victories, sent a small detachment to defeat a much larger Ottoman regiment stationed in Grocka (Krotzka) which is a suburb of Belgrade in present-day Serbia. They arrived on July 21, 1739, and launched into their attack on the Ottoman forces. After a full day of fighting, the Austrians decided to retreat in the middle of the night to avoid a disastrous defeat in the morning. The Ottomans, however, recognizing their opponents' retreat in the dead of night, charged the Austrians and inflicted a humiliating defeat on their detachment, forcing the Austrians to surrender. As a result, the Austrian Empire signed a treaty that awarded the Ottomans all of Northern Serbia and Oltenia (southwestern Romania)--effectively terminating the newly-established Kingdom of Serbia, a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire., Size : 290x995 (mm), 11.42x39.17 (Inches), Black & White Upper left margin shaved as part of the attachment to the book but image intact and in very good condition.
Signature is faint because of the background. Gentle horizontal fold, else fine.
