CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: First edition (another edition revised appeared in 1882). During the Civil War, William Swinton became a war correspondent for the New York Times. On the front lines he pursued stories aggressively; at one point he was accused of eavesdropping on the conversations of Generals Grant and Meade. Not liked or particularly trusted by the HQ generals, he was critical of many. Using this experience at the front, he penned several books on the conflict, including this one. A valuable account and here in a very attractive binding. Nice collector's copy. REFERENCES: DORN III 1280; NEVINS I pg. 45 (1882 ed): "Originally published in 1866; an analysis by a New York Times war correspondent; perspicacious and wordy, but invaluable interpretation." EICHER 1030: "Is an important early work that, among other things, contains the first discussion in print of the dissension between Lee and Longstreet at Gettysburg.Composed by a journalist who accompanied the Army of the Potomac during part of its history, the impartiality of the narrative and balanced objectivity marking most of the text give this book a lasting value.".
