Paperback. 198p., illustrated with simple collages and a substantial b&w insert section of period photography. Softbbound in 9x5.5 inch wraps with a cartooned cover picture (Swiss man turning into butterfly), quite a good copy with a presentation inscription on the first blank, otherwise slightest signs of handling and age.

Couverture souple. Condition: Neuf. Edition originale. Frontispice sur page faux-titre. « En 1838, Hypolite Lanctot, jeune et fougueux notaire de 22 ans, s'engage à fond dans le mouvement patriote. Il dirigera comme officier une des colonnes de larmée patriote à la bataille d'Odelltown. Arrêté puis jugé en 1839, il est le seul qui refuse de participer aux procédures alléguant lillégalité du procès intenté contre les patriotes. Condamné à mort, il est finalement exilé en Australie avec 57 de ses compagnons. De ces événements, Hypolite Lanctot nous laisse un journal écrit à la fin de sa vie, sous forme de lettres à ses enfants. Il y décrit longuement sa participation aux activités militaires ainsi que son emprisonnement et son procès avant de relater sommairement son voyage à bord du navire le Buffalo et sa vie en Australie. Lanctot demeure probablement le personnage le plus sympathique parmi les exilés : aucun prisonnier n'eut la moindre critique à son endroit, on s'adresse dailleurs à lui pour la rédaction des requêtes et lettres officielles. Il accepte sans rechigner les peines et misères infligées par les militaires et les autorités ; recherchant même l'aspect positif de la situation : il profitera de son séjour au fond de la cale pour améliorer son anglais ! ».

Condition: Good. First Edition. In 1605 werd door de bemanning van het VOC-schip het Duifje het Terra australis ontdekt. Voor de VOC was de eerste kennismaking met het nieuwe land niet bemoedigend. De tocht van het Duifje leverde weinig interessant nieuws op. Niets van enige handelswaarde werd ontdekt, enkel een dorre, onvruchtbare kust zonder drinkwater, bewoond door ongecultiveerde wilden. Geen goud, enkel zand. De nieuwsgierigheid was evenwel gewekt en verdere ontdekkingstochten volgden. Heel dramatisch verliep de reis van het gloednieuwe compagnieschip Batavia in 1628. Dit schip leed schipbreuk voor de kust van Australi? en onder de schipbreukelingen brak zelfs een muiterij uit. Er zouden meer schipbreuken voor de fatale kust volgen. Aan de tochten van de VOC-schepen naar Australi? wordt in deze uitgave ruime aandacht geschonken. Evenveel ruimte is door de auteurs ingeruimd voor de expedities die in de jaren zestig zijn gehouden ter opsporing van VOC-wrakken. Met name de speurtochten naar de resten van de Batavia, de Vergulde Draak, de Zuytdorp en de Zeewijk worden uitvoerig beschreven.
