Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. M.K. Gandhi: An Autobiography is the story of Gandhiji s, covering his life from early childhood through to 1920. It gives an authentic account of the personal life of a man who led millions into independence. Gandhiji wrote in his autobiography that the three most important modern influences in his life were Leo Tolstoy's The Kingdom of God Is Within You, John Ruskin's Unto This Last and the poet Shrimad Rajchandra. In the last chapter, he notes that his life from this point onward became so public that there was hardly anything about it that people did not know. Being a proponent of Ahimsa or nonviolence, Gandhi diligently stuck to a set of practices from early on in life. The book gives us a better understanding of the habits that Gandhi rigorously inculcated into his daily routine. His childhood, his journey to England, his life in South Africa and the non-cooperation movement in India are all discussed at length in this mind-opening book. (jacket).

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Navajivan Publishing House. Ahmedabad. 1948. 640 pages. Text in English. This title was printed in such tiny pressings that the first edition, first printing was only 6,000 copies. The next printing was the second edition; which printed even less than the first; this time 5,000 copies. This copy is the 5th overall printing; or the 2nd edition; 4th printing. The total print run of all five printings combined was only 41,000 copies. This 5th overall printing was published in 1948; the year of Gandhi's assassination. The plum of these early printings is the DJ; as they have nearly all disintegrated and withered away. Tipped-in this copy is a presentation page gifting this copy in Gandhi's memory on behalf of the Gandhi National Memorial Fund; hand-signed by the foundation's Chairman in 1953; the year in which the fund was first established. The fund still exists today to preserve 'the legacy of Gandhi; an apostle of truth and non-violence.' Original DJ with 7 rupees price intact. DJ shows chips, rubs and stains; much of it matching the boards underneath. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Good/Good. A very early printing of the classic in its rare DJ with tipped-in presentation page on behalf of the Gandhi National Memorial Fund. A true plum.

Hardcover. Vol. 1, 1933: First Edition, Second Impression. Vol 2, 1929: First Edition, First Impression. 6 x 9in. iii. 602pp. + portrait frontispiece; viii. 608pp. + portrait frontispiece. Publisher's fabric boards with stamped titling. The first and second volumes were not issued jointly, but two years apart and are rarely found together. Written chronologically, the second volume contains the most central and historically pertinent of those events and ideologies which culminated in the liberation of India from British occupation, and consequently is found offered for sale even less frequently than the first. Together they comprise one of the most significant spiritual and historical testaments ever written. The former copies of David Racoosin, who was an executive for the General Motors Far East division at the time of publication, with his ownership signatures on the front paste-downs of each volume. Both volumes are in overall VERY GOOD condition. Vol. 1 shows the foot of the spine somewhat scuffed and lightly discolored, one corner lightly shelf rubbed, front and back hinges intact but slightly loosened, text ever so slightly over-opened at the title page, otherwise the binding secure, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. Vol. 2 shows the spine ever so lightly tanned, the stamped titling is rubbed somewhat, the paper of the front and back paste-down at the hinges has been split but the binding itself is holding strong and securely, several lightly handling marks of the preliminaries, otherwise the text is clean and unmarked and the boards remain distinct. The frontispiece tissue guards of both volumes are present and complete. As pictured.
