About this Item: John Murray, London, 1927. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. wirh Illustrations by Helen McKie (illustrator). States "First Edition . . . MCMXXIV / Edition de Luxe . . . MCMXXVII." Thus, we have here the 1927 "de Luxe" second edition, with charming postcard-sized Helen McKie illustrations tipped in (mostly black & white, but four in color, and all in place.) "This edition limited to 1,000 copies for England and America," and in an elegant hand the author has numbered this copy 401 and signed it "Wren" (last name only.) There is also an elegant little NON-authorial 1931 gift inscription to FFE. This may once have been an elegant "Deluxe edition" (about 60 percent of the gilding to top page edges remains), but it simply wasn't well stored, and at this point it's no longer a very attractive book. It is, in fact, an unattractive book. Boards (and particularly the red cloth spine covering) considerably faded, spotted, discolored, and worn. Some foxing to preliminary and final pages. Minor dampstaining only (yes, this is odd, but we've seen it before) to the edges of the captioned tissue guards which guard each illustration. Book "good only." Following the 579 pp. of text we find a three-page musical score for "The Song of the Legion / March Theme of the Paramount Picture Beau Geste / Music by Frank Tours, James Bradford, and Hans Spialek / Lyrics by Edward Lockton / Copyright 1926." This at first seems odd, since the Jesse Lasky / Adolph Zukor 1926 "French Foreign Legion" film starring Ronald Colman, Victor McLaglen, Noah Beery, William Powell and Mary Brian is generally referred to as a "silent." In fact, however, by 1926 the major studios were distributing scores to theaters for live orchestra or organ accompaniment. Reduced from $190. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 003487

Isabel was P. C. Wren's second wife, and had previously been married to Cyril Graham Smith, a civil engineer with the Indian educational service at Poona. In 1927 Smith filed for divorce, citing Wren as co-respondent. 'Madge & Peter' were Mr. & Mrs. A. H. Parkes. The Parkes met the Wrens on a cruise, probably in 1927, and began a long-standing friendship. This copy of Beau Geste, Wren's most famous book, is the first of many volumes the author presented to the family over the years - usually to their son Francis Patrick, who was Wren's godson. About this Item: London: John Murray. [], 1924. First edition, first printing. Primary binding of red cloth with gilt titles to the spine and blind stamped titles to the upper board. A very good copy indeed, the binding square and firm with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. The cloth is a little darkened and the gilt to the spine dulled. The contents are entirely complete, without loose or torn pages and without inscriptions or stamps. There is a little spotting to the endpapers and half title otherwise clean and bright throughout. An excellent example. Whilst the signed "edition de luxe", published in 1927 is very common in commerce the true first edition of this adventure novel is of considerable rarity. The book exists in two bindings, the primary binding of red cloth (as deposited with the British Library and Bodleian library) was produced for sale in the UK, copies bound in blue cloth were produced for the American market. Both issues are rare. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. Seller Inventory # 12553
