A Lakeside Classic edition, presenting the memoirs of Elizabeth Keckley (c.1818-1907). Miss Keckley, was born into slavery, where she remained for thirty years. She eventually was able to buy her freedom and made her way to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a seamstress. She became an intimate of Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of the president. --- This deluxe edition edited and introduced by Frances Smith Foster. Includes a frontis photographic portrait of Keckley, several additional illustrations, maps and paintings. --- Number 96 in a series of annually published works continuously produced since 1903 by R. R. Donnelley & Sons, owners of the Lakeside Press. The books were not made available for sale by the publisher; rather, they were given as gifts to employees, vendors and customers at Christmastime. --- In full dark brown cloth-covered boards w/publisher's device on cover and titling on spine, all in gilt; top edge gilt. Lacks the glassine wrapper. --- A bright, clean, firm copy but with a small blemish to top edge gilding and a spot of inky soiling to pp. 206-7.; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; lxxvii, 319 pages.
