About this Item: Mayflower, 1970. Paperback: 7" x 4½". Condition: Fair: Heavier signs of wear. Cover Art: Bob Haberfield (illustrator). 1970 Edition. © 1969: 1st in the 'Karl Glogauer' series of books. 1st printing of 1970 edition. Winner of the USA's coveted Nebula Award:- Synopsis: Karl Glogauer, obsessed with the bright silver crucifix that dangles round the little girl's neck, tortured by his growing sexuality and the overwhelming mystic power of religion. Karl Glogauer loves with Eva, innocent and beautiful, but he is too destructive. He loves with a troop of middle-aged women, but they are just a training ground. He loves with Monica, but she is explosive, she stings like a scorpion. He loves. He tries to love. He tries. The story of Glogauer's crisis of identity weaves between modern London and ancient Palestine, between Glogauer's erotic hunt for personality and Christ's journey to the cross. This is perhaps the most controversial portrait of Christ ever painted:- Review(s): "Portnoy or Glogauer, the complaint's the same" - Evening Standard / "Here is a strange story. Here is a real inventiveness" - Manchester Evening News:- (original cost 5' (£0.25)). Seller Inventory # 20.039.00011

About this Item: Collins / Fontana, 1980. Paperback: 7" x 4¼". Condition: Very Good: Light signs of wear. Cover Art: Walter Wyles (illustrator). 1980 Edition. © 1969: 1st in the 'Karl Glogauer' series of books. 1st printing of 1980 edition. His Nebula Award winning story:- Review(s): "Michael Moorcock stands in relation to the world of science fiction much as Poe stood in relation to the Gothic novel. In 'Behold The Man' he has gone farther in point of imaginative outrage than ever before and farther than any previous writer in the genre. Moorcock's Karl Glogauer travels backwards in time in search of the truth about the Crucifixion. He finds more than he bargained for: a drooling idiot Jesus confined to the back room of the carpenter's shop, an animal Mary, Joseph on the make. Christ seems nowhere. Nowhere, shall we say, until Glogauer rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. Here is a writer of rare talent who has stumbled on an idea so dangerous and brilliant that scarcely any living writer could do justice to it" - Guardian:- (original cost £1.00). About this Item: Collins / Grafton, 1986. Paperback: 7" x 4½". Condition: Good: Moderate signs of wear. Cover Art: Geoff Taylor (illustrator). 1986 Edition. © 1969: 1st in the 'Karl Glogauer' series of books. 1st printing of 1986 edition. His Nebula Award winning story:- Synopsis: A sadistic game in a South London schoolyard planted the seeds of Karl's great future. Karl Glogauer's grip on reality had never been that strong. As his wretched childhood gave way to extended adolescence he floundered from one cranky religious sect to another. Finally, rejected by his Marxist girlfriend, he decided to take up Headington's offer. Karl would volunteer for Sir James's tie travel experiment - but only if he could choose the time and place. Which was how he found himself in Palestine 29AD. Yet who was that idiot slobbering on the floor of a Nazareth carpenter's shop? Who was that lascivious harridan? Little by little Glogauer realised that he himself must ride the donkey to Jerusalem:- Review(s): "Michael Moorcock stands in relation to the world of science fiction much as Poe stood in relation to the Gothic novel. Here is a writer of rare talent who has stumbled on an idea so dangerous and brilliant that scarcely any living writer could do justice to it" - Guardian:- (original cost £2.50).
